Why no some murals to celebrate great moments in Bobcat basketball/volleyball.

Hell...celebrate the men's Sweet 16 run with a big mural.

Volleyball's run to multiple NCAA tourneys/MAC title

Women's basketball MAC title/NCAA run

Maybe even some wrestling murals for MAC/NCAA success.

There are just so many blank, concrete walls once you get past the front ticket office. They did a good job there...but the rest of the arena is pretty blah.

This is a great idea. You should craft a little email to Schaus with your suggestions in this case.

Bornacat shared something about Mackey Arena at one time in comparison to The Convo. Here's a look at what they have - I think it's little like what you're suggesting.

http://www.allkyhoops.com/2014/11/road-trip-quick-stop-at...

When we went to Hinkle last year, we saw a lot of this:
https://dribbble.com/dustyahrens/projects/427335-Butler-B...

They've done a great job putting "The Butler Way" all over the walls in the walkways of the building.

This is EXACTLY the kind of stuff I'm referring too. Wouldn't be too terribly expensive, difficult to turn the concourse into something other than a concrete jungle.

NBA jerseys for Trent, Hunter, Ndour, etc.
Hell..even overseas jerseys for a lot the guys who have found success there

Promote the fact we put guys into pro basketball. It's pretty cool.

There are so many blank walls in there that this would definitely liven up the place and give it some Bobcat pride!

This might be OT...but it bears pointing out.

As I said earlier, we're our own worst enemy sometimes when it comes to elevating our own product.

I've gone on record many times saying the departure of Evan Shaw from our athletics dept was a far bigger blow than many probably think.

His work in video production elevated our football & basketball teams well above the fold...not only in the MAC but against most schools in the midwest.

His replacement Tanner Smith did a good job...but again, we were unable to keep him around long either.

Here is what Tanner is working on now....

https://www.nhl.com/bluejackets/video/behind-the-battle-t...

These are the type of things we should be turning out internally to further promote our product in both football and basketball. While we might not have an avenue like STO or ONN or another network to possibly air something like this (like we did with the shows Evan produced in the early 2010s)...this is what BobcatTV should be doing.

I'm not sure who is working in the space Shaw and Smith occupied...but this type of internal promotion is what sets you apart from your competition...in recruiting, marketing, etc.

I feel we really are missing a great opportunity to showcase our players/coaches/staff/fans/university with this kind of storytelling thru video.

Posting press conferences from the coaches is fine.....a wrap-up from Russ/Rob (only after a win, SMH) are okay. But those are vanilla and run of the mill. I'm not saying to stop them...they certainly have value. But let's elevate the product. We've done it in the past.

Make a commitment to think outside the box and sell Ohio University basketball and football as a first class institution and program.

I'd really like to see the athletic dept make these type of internal promotions a priority again.

I've been concerned over the last year or so (whenever they tightened security measures and put up the barriers around The Convo) with the outside lighting, especially for night games when ice/snow is present. We used to be able to get up close to The Convo (the inner circle) and walk around to the front entrance. That option is no longer available and, as a result, we are walking around the poorly lit "outer circle" of The Convo. My fear is that someone is going to take a nasty fall and a major lawsuit against the university will follow. The lighting around that outer circle is non-existent. I'm certainly not trained on security issues surrounding The Convo but I can't understand how walking around the "outer circle" is any more secure than walking around the "inner circle". After all, with the exception of the student entrance, we are all entering the same entrances, correct?
Per the other concerns, yes, new scoreboards are a must. If it can't be done via a suspension in the center of the arena then there is plenty of room for scoreboards around the top of the arena. I'd also like to see more signage throughout The Convo to recognize our many great athletes and teams of the past. There is so much potential here and it is by far one of the best venues for watching a game anywhere as far as I'm concerned.

I still think the ridiculous amount of security is an inside bribe/hack job. Who's minding the mint?

They painted a mural in the "tunnel" by the "roundabout".

Why not let art students paint some murals in the Convo as part of their class projects ?

I wonder if the marketing department gets the opportunity to travel to games outside the MAC to see where they could improve. Like most things though, it all costs money and Schaus and Co. are always running a tight ship.

A lot of good ideas have been thrown around here, but I don't think there's a lot to be learned around the league. I've been to most arenas in the MAC, and they generally lack what we already have: fans. What they have that we don't is stuff everyone (including Schaus) knows we need, starting with a scoreboard. If we had the money for it, we'd have the scoreboard. I just hope it's the #1 priority right now, because it is the biggest thing keeping the Convo from being really great.

Hence why I said outside the MAC.

Yeah, I read that too fast. Some of the low- and no-cost ideas here are pretty great, but the thing that keeps our big, beautiful arena from feeling big-time is the fact that it's not even easy to see the score sometimes. Every other MAC arena I've been to has proper video boards and visible scoreboards that contain actual information about play on the court. The placement of our scoreboards sucked in 1968 and the quality of them was surpassed even before they were installed.

No one would notice any of the aesthetic issues if they were watching a replay or seeing how many fouls and points a key player had.

No doubt about it, but it wouldn't hurt to have some of those aesthetics along the way.

preaching to the choir here, buddy. i think it makes the lower wall look more like it belongs in a public restroom. I think a faux brick cover on those walls would improve the look immensely.

I'm sure replacing every single seat in the building was a pretty expensive chore, so things will be done piece-meal and on a budget.

The scoreboard does not deter my enjoyment of the game. Some of these other suggestions to jazz up the lobby and common areas would be a higher priority and less expensive. To me the band makes a big difference in the atmosphere and I would like to hear them exclusively and shut down the piped in stuff.

As long as you realize that not everyone feels the same way about the band vs "piped in stuff". I'd guess that if you polled folks in the O-zone, they might have a different opinion. It's nothing against the quality of the band, but piped in music can do just as much, sometimes more, to get the building going beforehand, and during timeouts. It all depends on the people, and perhaps their age bracket.

Almost all our ideas cost money. If things look nickel-and-dimey its because athletics only has nickels and dimes.

Show me the money.......

I am not sure how many conference rooms there are in the Convo, but turn a large on in to a narrated newsreel of past Bobcat basketball great moments; kinda of like "Wake Up the Echoes," Bobcat style. Most students let along recruits haven't faintest notion of our illustrious history. What could it hurt?

Organization doesn't cost money. Coming up with smooth gameday event planning with current staff in place should not be that tough.

Stuff like having the band play AFTER Lou finishes on the PA mic instead of over top of him.

It's a very disjointed, stale feel at a game. While I agree money is needed for some of the cosmetic upgrades, the planning portion could be a lot better.

You do realize the band over Lou thing barely ever happens? It's a live event...always will be something that isn't to perfection.

But believe me, I know the folks that run this stuff and they are meticulous in making sure it is well done. I guarantee no one on here (myself included) understands the level of planning and detail involved. Everyone on the front lines of doing these things (playing music, instructing the band, Lou, etc) are 18-22 year olds.

Happened at least 3-4 times vs. Kent on Friday

Definitely not buying that. Will be counting in addition to keeping score next game :) Hah

I would've pegged Lou for being a few years older. Maybe 28.

Live music trumps all. When you go to a jazz club, do you want to hear the jukebox? We have a great band. Let them play.

When would the band play then? Between the promotional events on the floor and Lou having to be a pitchman for 10 different companies and announce future events, the band may as well stay home.
