We have a very weak nonconference schedule, including Georgia Tech. We could conceivably win 25 games if Kaminski and our guards play well and Tone continues to dominate. We have to come out sharp and build on our early successes.

Weak is "relative" - to any given day/night (a non-controllable - refs and calls - can be an influencing factor on any given night). We all know there are all kinds of potentially unexpected challenges that can arise through the course of a long season Non Conference and In Conference. But we should have some depth and breadth - inside and SF/wings especially - not so much at PG. We do have good experience in key positions.

I am not inclined to go the call it a "cupcake" schedule. "Twinkies" did not go outta biz for a while due to lack of supply or demand..... :)

Some of these teams, like Sam Houston, Iona, Southern and Marshall, are picked near the top of their respective leagues. Others, like Milwaukee, are picked near the bottom. You can't go just by the name of the school.

There are two top 100 teams on our nonconference schedule, Georgia Tech was #51 and Iona was ranked #85 at the end of last year and we were #86. Marshall was #130, Sam Houston was #192 and Southern was #197 and Milwakee was #173. Schedules are made over time and sometimes you happen to inherit a cupcake special. Milwakee and Bryant were decent three years ago, but now they stink. We should take advantage of our weak schedule and eat all the cupcakes. I looked at some of the rosters of our upcoming opponents. Georgia Tech returns their 5th highest scorer at 5 points a game, they have three MAC graduate transfers, no need to make them Goliath, Marshall returns 3 of 5 of their top scorers and Iona lost their top scorer who averaged 22 points a game and another player who averaged 13 points a game. I am just being real, this is not intended to insult anyone. Ohio State has a cupcake schedule almost every year. We could win 25 games or more. Go Cats, eat those cupcakes.

I see Jordan Price and Kellen McCormick. Just curious, who's the third?

We were ranked in the 200s two years ago. Were we a cupcake last year?

I'll stick with brownies, which are better than cupcakes anyway. They go with ice cream.

We have a cupcake nonconference schedule, one of our 3 opponents in the 200's maybe a surprise, but all three won't. I did not even mention Urbana. I am just being real.

I look forward to revisiting this around January 1st, when we will have a good sense of how strong the non-conf schedule is. I know this - at Iona, GT, and WKU are good road tests for OUr team.

I agree that those teams will be tough on the road, I believe barring any let down, we should win those games. If we play Ohio basketball, none of those teams can beat us. It is hard to play consistently and that will be something that this team will need to do to be successful. The emergence of Dartis and Kaminski will be very important. Can they be first second or third options every night. Can they shoot 40% from three. We know Simmons will create openings and we know Tone will dominate his position. We also need a six man to emerge.

Interesting, Ga Tech has two MAC grad transfers this season: Jodan Price from EMU and Kellen McCormick from Western Michigan.

For a minute, I thought I was on the football forum. There's a long thread there about how we are playing nothing but the dregs of college football. In the case of football, though, many of those weak teams are in the MAC, and we have little control over that part of the schedule. Here we are talking about non-conference games, and we do control that to a large extent. I remember last year that Saul said that the non-conference schedule would improve as we moved forward. Not sure I'm seeing that this year.

I'm with you on this. With the reigning MAC player of the year and Simmons and a good supporting group this may be the year to make some noise. Not sure this schedule will allow that. It takes two to tango, but I think we underscheduled this year.

It feels that way a little bit, but on the other hand, the road games are good solid games, and with two of them, we get a return game next year. I'm sure we'll never know, but it would have been good to know everyone they tried/wanted to schedule and it just fell through.

Yeah but we have a record 8 home Saturday games.

Here's hoping not all of them are 2 p.m. starts. Every MAC home Saturday game last year was a 2 p.m. tipoff and I missed all of them due to son playing every Saturday afternoon. And I was really looking forward to visiting the Convo multiple times last year, as many Newark residents were.

Amen to this thought. I've always thought 4pm, or *gasp* a couple night games would be a nice variety. I know some that drive far wouldn't like a 7pm on a Saturday, and I get that. But 1 or 2 conference games planned for a Saturday late afternoon, or 7pm tip is a good thing. Students get excited for night games, right?

I remember the 2012 year for the Bracketbuster game at 4pm, and the tip time worked out really well. The community of Athens made a lot of additional money on my group with that later start. We ate, drank, and shopped because we had lots of time before the game.
