Well, I do expect to do better against Akron this year... Considering they lost their two Bobcat slayers in McAdams and Kretzer, I don't expect to see their replacements shoot +50% on a high volume of three attempts over their careers against us. Dambrot must have used the anger of a spurned recruiting past to motivate them because they sure were money against us. Jeesh...

I know about the Kretzer story, but was McAdams also a spurned recruit? I didn't know that. Interesting. You could see the look in Kretzer's eyes every time he took the court against us. He was on a mission. Unfortunately, he usually succeeded in his mission.

Don't believe McAdams was the same as Kretzer. McAdams decided on Akron early coming out of Elida HS.

I don't know why I thought McAdams was a Pennsylvania product.

Interesting Van that they had two other players shoot so well against us last year too... Like I said though, I am still highly doubtful they can maintain that high percentage over their careers...
Oh, and sorry for the confusion. My comment about the spurned recruiting motivation was in no way based in fact but merely a funny (or not so funny) way of trying to explain the two aforementioned players, (McAdams and Kretzer) amazing shooting performance specifically against us...

Borna, McAdams graduated from Elida HS (Lima, Ohio)! I remember being disappointed he was going to Akron. He played with some of our local kids in aau.

If I were guessing, he was referring to Antino Jackson, and Josh Williams. Both are outstanding guards that can shoot it. But we're not talking about 6'7" forwards that can shoot over people in the way McAdams and Kretzer could.

I'm interested to see how Ohio and 'Kron matchup this year. I still think UB is gonna be better than Akron.

If Culver and Carter are even half as good as they are being hyped in the Post and the Messenger then I think we will be top dawg by a lot. From what I understand they are bringing what we were lacking last year: Length and athleticism as well as offensive capability. If you look, Tone, Kenny and Gavin are offense predominantly. Wadley, Khari and DT were defensive. Jaaron and Darty were a nice combo of the offense and defense but weren't enough. Treg was a nice mix too but was our "thuggish" player that every good team needs. The Floor Burn guy. I hear that Culver and Carter are like Darty and Jaaron so we could put a Tone or a Kenny in and hide them defensively and not lose much.

Not sure who the Big Fat Dog is.... I saw an entire team that looked pretty svelte... If you have been reading along there have been some allusions to weight changes and amounts.....

There was lots of Akron talk above, I figured Big Fat Dog was fair game for this thread. Could also be that I just like referring to him as Big Fat Dog as much as possible.

Four years ago, I saw this kid play in the state tournament, and could not believe he was a first team all state big school selection. Sure, he had some potential, but he was so out of shape! Same thing last year with Caleb Wesson at Westerville South, whose reputation has far exceeded his actual accomplishments on court. He was supposedly one of the top 100 kids in his class nationally, but could not even make first team all central Ohio. To his credit, he heard the wake up call. He's reportedly lost weight, changed his diet and is now in better shape as he prepares for his senior year. Still think he's over rated, but he is at least making an effort. If Johnson at 'kron had made the effort, he MIGHT have a shot at a pro career...

I'm a little concerned that Carter might spend much of his freshman year in foul trouble. Seems like almost all our freshman big men in the last ten years have had serious problems staying on the court with fouls. Don't remember it being as big a problem with the wings and guards.

Interesting topic, Van. I'm not sure we're all that dissimilar from other teams in that regard, but I was interested in the numbers. Below are the fouls committed per 40 minutes per Kenpom for freshmen going back to 2002. I included in the notes the overall national rank when the player had enough minutes to qualify.

Year Cl Player FC/40 Note
2008 Fr DeVaughn Washington 9.4
2014 Fr Tony Campbell 7.8
2016 Fr Doug Taylor 7.6
2014 Fr Wadley Mompremier 6.6
2007 Fr Kenneth van Kempen 6.5
2011 Fr T.J. Hall 5.8
2010 Fr Reggie Keely 5.6
2011 Fr Ricardo Johnson 5.4
2010 Fr Ivo Baltic 5.4
2012 Fr Tyquane Goard 5.0
2005 Fr Leon Williams 4.5
2004 Fr Matt Annen 4.3
2015 Fr Khari Harley 4.2
2006 Fr Jerome Tillman 4.2
2016 Fr James Gollon 4.0
2012 Fr Stevie Taylor 3.7
2009 Fr Steven Coleman 3.7
2008 Fr Tommy Freeman 3.7
2004 Fr Sonny Troutman 3.7
2002 Fr James Bridgewater 3.7
2016 Fr Gavin Block 3.5
2011 Fr Nick Kellogg 3.5
2010 Fr Jay Kinney 3.2
2002 Fr Zach Kiekow 3.2
2005 Fr Jeremy Fears 3.1
2009 Fr Frankie Dobbs 2.9
2015 Fr Ryan Taylor 2.8
2015 Fr Mike Laster 2.7
2004 Fr Whitney Davis 2.7
2003 Fr Jeff Halbert 2.7 411th in the nation
2003 Fr Stephen King 2.6
2016 Fr Jordan Dartis 2.4 262nd in the nation
2010 Fr D.J. Cooper 2.3 275th in the nation

Based off my interpretation of the players position, I come up with an average FC/40
Backcourt: 3.4
Frontcourt: 6.1

- Shout out to DeVaughn!
- T.J. Hall comes in with the highest FC/40 that I wouldn't consider a front court guy (although I couldn't get Jaivon Harris's freshman stats and that's a guy who may have given him a run here).
- Leon Williams/Jerome Tillman were lower than I would have guessed/remembered.
- O/T, but intrigued to see Ryan Taylor's career resume at Evansville

Nice research. I'm surprised KvK wasn't up near Devo. I remember thinking as a freshman how I thought half the fouls he got were because his hair moved so much when he bodied up a guy making the contact look more violent than it was.

Can you fish out Treg Setty's FC per 40 early in his career? I feel like it might beat Devo's very impressive 7+.

If the stats also show stops and opp possessions w/o scores I'm OK w/dat. We should have a deeper bench of bigs (Taylor, Wad, plus) so take the pressure off Tone if he gets in foul trouble - get more opp bigs in foul trouble....

I wanna see some nasty/aggressive D in the paint....

I figured it out. I was thinking of McAdams and it was McNeese that prepped in PA. McNeese will be in the Convo on Dambrot's staff.

TRMD

that is some pretty stellar work there with KenPom.

Numbers are interesting . Kind of staggering to think those numbers are per 40 minutes. You think about the implication is that the more fouls they have the harder it is string 40 minutes together and figure out how many games it takes put those numbers up and how that affects the team with regard to line ups, PT and mismatches while they are off the floor.

I tried to figure out if the situation was the result of High Hard Hedges that were prevalent in the Groce years but there is no rhyme or reason given Saul or TOS flat hedges or no shows when figuring out who was coaching and their screen/defensive philosophy. SOme of those are dependent as well on the abilitly of the guard to keep a man in front of him so that the big does not have to rotate and take a foul. It is an interesting list and gives pause.

Speaking of freshman bigs. Nice article on Doug Taylor in the Post. Would not be surprised to see him take a big step forward this year. Especially since he was coming off a major knee injury his Senior season.
