Basketball players are made from March to November. Heading into the homestretch of the off season with today's first practice. I am excited for this bunch. Remolded bodies, off season work on handles, shooting picked apart and cleaned then repped.

Today it begins

Such an exciting time in year 3 of SaulBall. The team exceeded my expectations by 8 wins last year with 4 more MAC wins than I thought. Jaaron went to elite PG camp..Tony got sculpted..Doug Taylor lost some weight and is more healthy..Kenny has no shoulder brace and Jordy has a year in. Cant wait to see Dozier and freshmen! Man Im pumped.

I was flipping through one of the preseason mags and it has Ohio 3rd in the East behind Akron and UB. I think it was Athlon

I think we should be ranked third. We couldn't touch Kron last year in both games and Buffalo returns some studs who really took it to us in the MAC Tourney.

And we return some studs that took it to them twice in the regular season. Frankly, I see the East as a coin flip between the three.

I agree on the beating them in the regular season. I think our guys were just tired by that time and Buffalo had a bit more depth. They do return Raheem Johnson who is a load inside and will battle with Tone this year.

I think that if Carter and Culver can be as good or better than Block and Darty were last year we will be the clear cut East champion. I just felt like at times last year if we weren't hitting from outside we had trouble scoring. Now we have slasher and mid-range types in the two frosh and if they can get 5 to 8 points per game and a few boards, steals and assists each we should, with our returning core, be able to take down Kron and Beefs.

I agree with Monroe here. Everyone else has had significant changes from graduation or transfer. Ohio has had the least amount of change in the East.

Akron lost McAdams and Kretzer, and have 7 freshmen. They won't be the same team we had a hard time with last year. It's possible they take a small step backwards this year unless several freshmen step up to provide the depth that they've had in recent years.

UB as we know lost Bearden. His absence was a big deal last year. They have two new PG's, and also have some talented new freshmen. I think they'll be just as good as recent years.

The team no one mentioned was Kent, who still have Jimmy Hall, and have added two highly rated JUCO transfers. They also have Jalen Avery who is one year more mature.

BG might surprise - they have three 3* freshmen guards coming in. You'd have to think that at least one of them is going to contribute significantly.

Miami...well........

Is it just me, or is the MAC on an upswing?

My only question this year is are we quick enough?

I like to look at "Big 3's" and while we have Tone, Jaaron and Kenny (in terms of double figure scorers) I think that Buffalo with Perkins, Conner and Hamilton and Kron's Big Dog, Robotham and Jackson are very competitive. Then when you go to the "others" we have Darty and Buffalo has Massinburg. AKron has Cheatham. As you continue to go player by player Kron has Williams back along with Jackson and Ivey while we have Gavin and DT. Buffalo has Raheem Johnson back with Smart.

For Akron, I'd argue that Williams is a better player than Robotham. Cheatham is a matchup challenge as well.

I think our biggest challenge is filling in for the loss of Setty. For the folks who have been around a while the loss of Jeff Boals comes to mind.

I hope that Carter can fill the Treg role. I know that Gavin will be fine but Treg's 12 points and 5 boards per game will probably be gobbled up by Block, Carter and Culver..maybe even Harley and Laster who I expect to play a bit more in a "speed and athleticism" lineup.

Agreed. Somebody is going to have to step up and replace his toughness and energy. Skills won't be hard to replace. The intangibles will.

I'm anxious to see how much Saul plays with the lineups in the early goings to find a few he likes. There are a ton of guys on this team more than capable of making up for the loss of Treg. More important than his production will be his leadership, which it sounds like Jaaron has already taken that role and ran with it.

I'm not sure about that. The Zips return 7 players who played 30+ games. I don't know a thing about their freshman but I would count on them being tough again.

So true. And there's now way I thought this 2 seasons ago. Setty forced me to be a fan last year.

I agree about the MAC. Hopefully, the teams stay healthy and don't underachieve in the non conference games.

The Zips could roll out the LaFerla twins and we'd still have a tough time with Akron. As long as Dambrot is on the bench that's how it will always be.

I think Carter will be a board beast. Good nose for the ball and looks like he does the heavy lifting when needed. Gavin is stronger and has the ability to play several positions and defend with really acute sense of weak side gaps and help.

I'll agree that they have three very capable guards, the big space eater, and a match up problem in the form of Cheatham. The depth, depending on the freshman may not be great. Ivey and Aaron Jackson weren't overly impressive, but Dambrot's kids seem to get better year over year, so who knows.

Well, I do expect to do better against Akron this year... Considering they lost their two Bobcat slayers in McAdams and Kretzer, I don't expect to see their replacements shoot +50% on a high volume of three attempts over their careers against us. Dambrot must have used the anger of a spurned recruiting past to motivate them because they sure were money against us. Jeesh...

Kwan Cheatam and Josh Williams combined to go 10-20 from three against us last year.
