Grad Transfer Article

Saw this article about the Grad transfer rule the other day and thought it was interesting. Had some comments from Senderoff about Jimmy Hall being "recruited" this off season. Got me thinking if Jaaron could be in the same "recruiting" situation next year...

What I want to know is this - what's stopping the NCAA from suspending coaches and programs? All they'd have to do is look a phone records, right?

Beyond that, what's wrong with making a kid sit for a year if they want to reward them academically with this rule? Then, the kid gets the graduate degree, and gets that "high-major" experience.

Wasn't there a player a few years back that St. Joseph's or one of the other Philly schools refused to release?

The other side of the coin on this, of course, is that a player should absolutely have the freedom to go where he wants. If he wants to either start graduate school and identifies a school with a better program, or pursue a professional career and thinks proving himself against a higher caliber schedule is his best bet, so be it.

Do you think this rule in any way, factors into a coach's thought on redshirting or not? If I don't redshirt the student, then I get four years out of them. If I redshirt them, by the end of their junior playing season, they could be graduating.

All that said, congratulations to any player who can graduate in four years and take advantage of this. I'd be impressed.

Hopefully we have such a fine season this year with great talent coming back despite Tony moving on that he won't feel the need to bother transferring anywhere. I think we'll be fine and Jaaron stays, but just in case if anyone can steer Jaaron to less credit hours and something else that would preclude him from finishing up his degree next Spring, that would be great.

Khari Harley ain't goin nowhere (lack of grammar intentional). He can't even find time on our roster so there's no way he goes to anywhere for grad school. He is fortunate to have a scholly from us.

Maybe he goes somewhere else for school itself? I know we think of many of these guys as leaving for basketball reasons, but maybe he leaves to get his masters degree? There are kids who do it.

Huh? He may not be going to a bigger program but seems to me he might be a perfect candidate to go somewhere else if he doesn't think he'll get PT here.

While I agree with what you say I wouldn't rule out him leaving for basketball reasons either. In fact, I would think he'd have a higher % of leaving than Jaaron for basketball reasons. He's already sat out one year, was recruited by a different coach and isn't getting much playing time. Why wouldn't he look at another opportunity? He might be looked at as a nice addition to a smaller program.

I don't disagree with you Van, I just wanted to point out that despite what some believe - not pointing fingers on this board, just a general statement - some of these kids are going to use this rule with academics as the primary motivator.
