He's not wrong. I don't think they're the only example of that though, they're just the most notable and probably the best.

I meant in regard to his top choices, sorry, just sarcasm towards those who believe we need to be pursuing him based solely on his father being a basketball alum.

The one thing that Kentucky can never provide: an opportunity to surpass his father in becoming the greatest player in a school's storied program history en route to making his millions. How is Saul not selling this?

You must be kidding. If he's good, he's not staying long enough to surpass his father.

He isn't staying long enough to win one tournament game?

How is he not selling it? Because it won't sell. And our program may be "storied" to us, but to 18 year old kids at the top of the recruiting board, we are just a run of the mill mid major.

What you said Jeff.

Maybe I'd buy this concept if Gary Jr. were living in Columbus, and the family was at EVERY home game together, and Jr. was raised around Bobcat hoops. Maybe, and that maybe is like a 15% chance in this scenario.

Gary Trent Jr has probably never once considered Ohio because he aspires to play for the blue bloods because he's THAT good. The only ones who think he should seriously consider playing at Ohio are delusional Ohio fans remembering Gary Sr's glory days.

Our 3 NCAA Tournament wins this century would rank us in the top 20 of mid-majors. Definitely not "run of the mill" in the framework of only mid-majors but also not in the same realm as Kentucky's 37 NCAA Tournament wins (this century) which rank them in the top 5 of all of D-1 college basketball.

All-time, Kentucky ranks #1 in this department with 173 tournament wins. Interestingly, Ohio's 7 wins all-time is good enough for #105 overall and excluding the major conferences, we rank 30th. That 30th rank goes up substantially if start excluding schools who were good 50 years ago but are now pretty much irrelevant. Pretty good showing for a mid-major.

If you'll read my message I said the perception of an 18 year old 5 star recruit. Such a person would shrug his shoulders at your info, Optimist.

Personally, I don't think Ohio is run of the mill.

Yeah but of our 7 wins how many of those were over 50 years ago.

I agree that your average 18 year-old recruit 5* won't care. But I also don't think, even for the best recruits, we are a "run-of-the-mill" mid major. For recruits today, they've seen Ohio in the tournament in their lifetime. That is a good thing. We've got some name-recognition. I'm not saying we are going to go out and grab 5* recruits... But I also think we are MUCH better positioned than run-of-the-mill mid-majors... Your average 18 y/o 3-star is going to think more highly of OHIO than he is going to think of some mid-major who hasn't won a tournament game in his lifetime, which IS the norm for mid-majors......

Off the top of my head, 3. You have 3 in the last decade, which again puts us in the upper-echelon of mid-majors for this time-frame. Then you have the Tatum buzzer-beater in the 80's, then 3 before that. So 3.

Optimist, I agree we are not run of the mill. But the elite recruits are barely aware of mid majors. Heard one of em a couple of years ago saying he was passing up a big program (Kansas, I think) to "go help a small school" (Texas A&M). Texas A&M a "small school"?!?! Welcome to the mindset of many elite recruits.

Optimist--I admire your appreciation of OHIO. But I think you are vastly over-stating the prominence of OHIO to, and consideration of OHIO by, top recruits.

I saw an article from last year that mentioned O$U was on GT2's list because of his friendship with Jeff Boals. Boals is now gone, and O$U wasn't even mentioned in the article. Sometimes it helps to have someone on staff who knows a kid. That's how we got DJ; Groce had known him while at O$U and brought him to Ohio.

Why isn't Trent Jr. going to Western Carolina to play for the man that took the flyer on his dad in the first place? Where's the loyalty?

See how silly some of you sound expecting him to be a lay-down for Ohio?

I seem to remember Anthony Jones (2001) getting some time in the North Charleston Lowgators program, which is now defunct. He was in the footage of an ESPN type of show I saw doing drills etc.

That name would be much more famous had he hit the shot after the infamous Grunkemeyer 3 in the 2001 MAC tourney. Not to pour it on him but I seem to remember him dribbling the ball off of his foot then the clock expiring?
