I doubt anything comes of it. He's not hiring an agent. Probably just going to see what feedback he gets.

Sounds exactly like when Brandon Hunter did the same before his senior season. A smart move by Tony to get the experience and input, I would be shocked if he didn't come back.

As mentioned in the Caravan thread, Saul previewed this news. He said it was a great move for his future, and that he's quite confident TC will be back with the Cats next year.

There was discussion on CBS about declaring for the draft during the NCAA tourney. Some said that the rules almost beg kids to declare for the draft, just to find out where they'd come out. If a kid doesn't hire an agent, there's no harm. But it makes it difficult for coaches when it comes to recruiting because they have no idea what positions they might need to fill next year. The entire Kentucky team declared for the draft (which really isn't a big deal, when you consider Calapari's view on one-and-dones).

If you're in a situation like Cal I could see where the recruiting would be a problem, but I doubt schools like Ohio will. TC is most likely a long shot for the league right now, which spells good for Ohio. Saul could actually spin that to recruits like "look, we've got a guy trying out for the NBA right now."

Does anyone know beyond supposition how this actually works for the athlete? Do NBA teams come forward and say "We might spend a third round pick on you unless something better comes up"? Does it just open the door for conversations with team execs? I just can't imagine that a GM is going to commit his team to anything concrete at this early stage of things unless it's negative, i.e. "No, we don't want you...."

Well, unless things changed this year, I don't think I have as much chance of being selected in the third round as AC. The NBA Draft consists solely of two rounds.

As to how the process works, it sounds like an interesting documentary. I'd love to know about the prep of a borderline draft pick.

One of the questions I'd love to know about AC is: If told he may be a late 2nd rd pick, would he go? What if they said also that, with work as a senior, he could be borderline 1st/2nd round? Would that make him stay?

Makes sense for Tone to take advantage of this opportunity. Realistically, he's got the talent and touch but definitely needs to add strength and stamina. Hope he gets some solid experience this spring and works hard over the summer and has another monster season for the Cats.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

If you're projected to go 2nd round...and late 2nd round at that...I'd assume it's a no brainer to come back. 2nd round works on non guaranteed contracts, and in some situations - it's considered better to go undrafted and try out as a free agent than go late 2nd round.

So what are Tony's weaknesses, seems like he struggled some against big centers and maybe not quick enough for power forward. To me he is kind of a tweener for the NBA. He needs to develope a mid range shot, he shoots a lot of soft hooks from 6' and shoots some good 3's sometimes but he needs more in the 8-15' range. I think in a year he may develop a better game but under the basket and then 25' 3's leave room for improvement. The NBA isn't the MAC but I wish him the best in 2017 not 2016 in the NBA.

I would be shocked if Tony projects to anything more than a second-round pick at best at this time. His low-post scoring, passing ability and shooting range (if he's open) I believe have piqued the NBA scouts' curiosity. I would think Tony will learn from them that he doesn't project to the center position on the NBA level, so he'll need to develop four-man skills--big forward skills--as a defender. He'll also have to get in much better shape, as the NBA players change ends at least every 24 seconds.

This is an EXTREMELY difficult league not only to play in, but to STAY in. Think about the horde of dominant college players we've all seen who couldn't get off an NBA bench, much less hang on in the league. What I've read about Tony is all that I know about him. Commendably, he seems to be a guy who just isn't living for today, but has a vision for his future. I do believe he'll learn all he can from this experience and use it to his advantage; to work on the weaker parts of his game and get better. I'm not in the prediction business, but Tony's circumstances dictate he will return and Ohio should reap the benefits.

I would normally be chagrined at such an obvious gaffe but this just shows how little I care about the NBA and I'm curiously proud not to know that fact. Please don't hate on me.

1. I am no fan of the NCAA, but I agree with Saul. The new rules concerning declaring for the NBA draft are much to the player's advantage. Kudos to the NCAA,

2. I am surprised Simmons isn't doing the same thing as Tony.

3. I have read elsewhere that so many players are expected to declare that not all who do so will be invited to the official pre draft evaluation camp, there just won't be room. I don't know how many will go to the Portsmouth camp, which starts today and is not officially linked to the NBA. But if you don't get an invite to the official pre draft camp, it's time to go back to school...

I hope he comes back for selfish reasons.

I'm kinda surprised that more international teams don't start throwing contract offers and money at some of these college players who are fringe nba players like Campbell. That would be tempting to a lot of college kids. I think Tony ends up in Europe when it's all said and done, but might as well see what the nba folks think first.

I thought the Portsmouth camp was just for seniors who have completed their eligibility.

Sam Vecenie of CBS ranked the 83 underclassmen who have declared for the NBA draft. Here's what he says about Tony:

70. Antonio Campbell: PF/C, Ohio, 6-10, 260, 21 years old

Scouting Profile: Campbell was the MAC player of the year this season, averaging a double-double at 17.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game this season at Ohio. Campbell is a smart, big-bodied post player who has a nice little arsenal of post moves as well as a soft touch inside. He also showed the burgeoning ability to shoot 3s this season, knocking down 40.4 percent of his 100-plus 3-point attempts. He'd interest a team in the second round, but could be better off returning given the breadth of players in this draft.

Hiring Agent? No

Draft range: Second round to undrafted

If he's 70th among underclassmen, and then you add in seniors and international players and he'd be pretty far down. But he'll have another year to improve that and have a shot at getting drafted next year.

Great Move by Tony. Hopefully he gets an invite and impresses. Would love to see him get taken in the first round this year, so hopefully he projects there from the scouts.

I'd love to see him project in the first round NEXT year. That means he's really upped his game to a very, very high level that would mean he's a two time MAC POY. I can't see any way yet that he's a first round NBA talent. I can see the potential if he improves his game though.
