Both games would essentially accomplish the same thing. How could you be for one and against the other? NKU plays in a state of the art arena: http://i.imgur.com/qmCfJpv.jpg

But they average only 3-4k so we could easily out draw them and make it an essential home game anyway.

Wes, just because you do not recognize NKU as a worthy school demanding your attention would be like saying "why would we play a silly school from SPokane" 2 decades ago. NKU is committing resources like Gonzaga did way back. Whether they make it or not remains to be seen but just dismissing them because you do not consider them worthy is on you....not the folks in basketball who actually are paying attention and seeing what is being done down there.

Ask yourself this, would Xavier agree to a 1 for 1 with NKU? They need to limit their exposure to lower tier conferences.

Xavier is able to get home-and-homes with teams like Missouri, Alabama, and Auburn. Comparing us to them is just silly.

This sounds reminiscent of some of the disrespectful rhetoric seen on other boards. We would have a decent crowd at NKU but we wouldn't out draw them. We travel well to Miami but we still don't out draw them.

Horizon is an equal league to the MAC, so I'm scratching my head about the "lowering our standards" remark.

Home and home with NKU would be great.

Here is a list of teams Xavier played road games against that were in what could be considered a weaker conference than the A-10 at the time:

1999: Miami (MAC), CMU (MAC)
2000: Princeton (Ivy), Toledo (MAC)
2001: Miami (MAC), San Francisco (WCC), Creighton (MVC)
2002: Siena (MAAC)
2003: Ball State (MAC), Miami (MAC)
2004: None
2005: Miami (MAC), Creighton (MVC)

After 2005 there was a significant dropoff in true road games against smaller conference opponents. Xavier started playing more holiday tournaments and one or two big games on the road against power conferences. Ohio simply isn't at that level yet. Play some road games against conferences you know you can beat, then take a swing at getting home and homes with somebody bigger.

Since Butler left Horizon:

RPI:
15-16
MAC: 10
Horizon: 18

14-15
MAC: 10
Horizon: 16

13-14
MAC: 12
Horizon: 14

Two things on this. First, the margin of difference in the conference RPI's over the last 4-5 years is pretty small, so I think calling the Horizon a comparable league is, for the most part, a fair statement. The only thing I will say is that while the MAC has gradually been trending higher, the Horizon has slowly been trending lower. As recently as 12-13, the Horizon was slightly higher than the MAC in the RPI figure.

This is the game we need to schedule. I'm sure NKU would love to schedule a home-and-home with us. We can't get a home-and-home with UC or X, so this allows us to play a game in the Cincinnati market.

Lowering our standards to agreeing to a 1 for 1 with NKU is not going to help. The only Horizon school OHIO should be playing is Cleveland State with the road game at the Q. All the schedule needs is a couple of home/away series with P5 or Big East schools to reduce the amount of payday games and moving more of the payday games to weekends to help attendance. Every coach has promised to make the adjustment but every year its the same type of basketball schedule.

I think a couple games against Wright State from the Horizon would be good to mix in for alums living in Southwest Ohio. Other than Mullet, I mean Millet Hall in Oxford, The Nutter Center is the closest arena to my home and where I could see the Cats getting a 1 for 1 with regularity.

Last couple of years, the MAC has been better than the Horizon, but in the long term view those conferences are comparable. For example, do you really think Cleveland State is going to be this down for long?

Isn't besides building a tournament resume the non conference schedule is preparing for the conference season. Isn't it safe to say riding 3-4 hours in a bus and playing in front of 3-7 thousand people very similar to MAC play?

It was clear that we need work on playing true road games early this past season. Why not schedule a couple that are very similar to what we would see in the MAC? If we lose those games chances are we weren't an at large candidate anyways. The committee won't say "well they beat four power schools and were 15-1 in league play however they did beat Wright State on the road so we can't extend an invitation to the dance."

Already on this board a possible Wright State or NKU game has generated more interest than most of our non conference schedule from last year. I think it is a great idea. Let's beat all these "lesser opponents" consistently before we can claim we are truly above them.

True road games are good thing. We need them to prepare for half of the MAC games.

We still have to play and win the game but, Georgia Tech on the road should be a win right? The pre-pre-season write-up I read says that they lost a ton of starters and are picked behind (Yikes) Boston College in the ACC...

Fuss has always been pretty good at following trends and finding teams on the rise that we can schedule. I think JS is fine tuning the approach to scheduling based on his time "in the room". Can't really be there without being affected in your thought.

We caught some good teams when TOS was here and those wins live on. Hopefully this bunch will realize opportunities only come along periodically and they need to take advantage. Tony's maturity and hunger could go a long way with Dartis and Block's youth to set up some sustainable success. Clearly a different program than when we started the treks from Muncie in Jume 07 IMHO. Still need to stay hungry and aspire to a bigger potential. This year has potential to be a springboard.

Article has a pretty good take on direction and how the AD/Coach think

It also has a take on what reality is. Those thinking we should be getting a P5 school, or a school like Dayton to play in The Convo should take note. It's not just some posters on here saying it ain't likely to happen, it's folks making the decisions and having conversations with opposing schools, and the beat writer saying so as well.

So far, I like what I see, because I believe they'll be after playing a tougher "guarantee game" and will probably add another decent home game. Adding 1 or 2 more larger names to that schedule would be nice. It also tells you what 5 of probably seven or eight home games will look like. My only hope is that many more of the ones in November and December fall on Sat/Sun this year than they did last year.

Not a real exciting home schedule. My guess is that 90% of our fans couldn't tell you in what town 4 of those schools are located or what conference they play in. It's been 17 years since the MAC got an at large bid - with 12 teams in the league that's 187 chances. I think the MAC's 15 home game "rule" hurts the conference's national reputation.

DO you have a solution to attracting more "name"or "exciting" opponents to come to the Convo to play?

Same comments, different year.

Why do you think the MAC's rule hurts the national rep? Would we have a better rep if more teams went into the P5 houses as a sacrificial lamb? What was the reasoning behind the 15 game rule? I have a hard time criticizing it without knowing why they did it. I can't just make a brash declaration without understanding how it got that way. Just me though...many of my peers do not have a problem with commenting.

Mandating 6 home non-conference games could very well contribute to schools like Central scheduling four non-D1 games.
