Wow, really? I don't read their board but when I saw your comment I had to go back to double check their schedule. No way they get an at large even if they win out up to the Mac tourney finals.

I don't believe Akron will get an at-large this year. Right now, they haven't lost enough to ELIMINATE that possibility but I also put the likelyhood very low. The real clowns are the people on this board who believe in a conspiracy against the MAC to prevent an at-large bid.

Akron is 17-4. Their big problem is the lack of an BIG win. Arkansas is a decent win but that isn't exactly top of the poster material... That said, Akron is 17-4. Lets just say they win out and go 27-4. Then finish 28-5 with that only loss coming in the MACC. Do they get an at-large? I think they do. Thing is, I'm sure the clowns on their board will be talking at-large if they lose two or three more along the way. Is Akron getting an at-large if they go 25-8? Nope. And then all the tinfoil types who can't do math will be claiming conspiracy...

Let me dive deeper into our annual discussion on the MAC at-large conspiracy theorists. There is not conspiracy. The MAC hasn't received an at-large bid because the MAC hasn't had a team that deserves an at-large bid. The MAC has been kinda unlucky... Teams that WOULD have deserved a bid end up winning the MAC tournament... Team that doesn't deserve the bid as MACC loser end up not getting at-large...

I've seen crazier things happen.

Amen brother. I say all the time they're the biggest rival we have in my eyes, and it goes back more than a few years. For me, it goes all the way back to the Hipsher days.

Enjoy the rivalry while you can. Akron's hair brained president is in the process of transforming the school into an online diploma mill. Trying to buy ITT Tech campuses now and continuing to alienate full-time faculty, who are leaving in droves. Just saw figures regarding applications for next year's freshman class - down 34%. On-campus enrollment dropped another 4% this year. They had to lower the Honors College requirement 2 points (ACT) to fill available spots. Donations down 45% from alumni. This school might not exist in 5 years.

This game will really tell me whether we have turned the corner with the past 2 wins or whether we regress to how we players 3-5 games age.

The 4 keys to victory are;
1) Stay out of foul trouble, particularly Tony
2) KK must shot the ball at a good % from 3
3) JS must be aggressive in taking his mid range jumpers and drives to the hoop
4) Keep turnovers under 10.

We have a real opportunity here to build on this turn around that started 2 games a go and especially since we are playing what is probably the best team in the conference.

Couple the lack of a big win to what the committee would probably consider bad losses, Green Bay and CMU, they won't get in. Of course that depends on if Akron wins out and how GB and CMU finish.

I agree though, there really hasn't been a deserving MAC team to get an at-large bid. The only one in the last 10 years I would probably give a shot was 2013-14 Toledo which went 27-7. They were 27-5 heading into the MAC title game against WMU and lost. But they didn't have any big wins that year other than Robert Morris. Boston College and Detroit weren't good. They had a good loss only losing to Kansas by ten in a high scoring affair in Lawrence.

Akron went 26-7 in 2006-07 and were just OK. They beat two tournament teams that year in Niagara and Oral Roberts and lost by two at home to a good Nevada squad, but that was it.

In the last 10 years, the only teams that truly deserved at-large bids won the MACC. They were 2008 Kent and 2013 Akron. That's it.

The Arkansas win is a win against a P5 team...but it's also against a P5 team that is 11-10 overall and not making the NCAA tourney (unless they really turn it around fast). Right now the CMU and Toledo losses would be enough to keep them out, both mediocre teams in the MAC.

Well, the perception, student recruitment and faculty attitude will all change when they become Ohio Tech! ;-) Seriously, isn't the name change idea completely dead at this point? I've seen folks refer to it in other threads as though it might still happen, but I thought the prez said it was just a trial balloon that had been shot down. Perhaps, it's time to let Kent State just take over UA and let it become the downtown campus. They could cut out all the duplication, cut the faculty of AU in half, reduce enrollment on the downtown campus significantly, and still be the second largest school in the state of Ohio. Personally, I've always thought it crazy to have two state school so close to each other. Akron should never have been allowed in the state system, but a certain state senator (initials O.O.) made it happen. I shouldn't be too hard on the guy though, as he was also a key player in the creation of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Well just so you guys know, we don't actually think we are getting an at-large. If you look at our board, one person made the suggestion and was pretty much shot down.

Forsythe is healthy, but has seen his role decrease just slightly with Big Dog playing so well.

The McAdams trash talk cracks me up. He is a really, really good kid. Although I'll give you that the mustache was pretty bad, but that's gone thank goodness.

And don't worry, we dislike you guys just as much. It has been such a fun rivalry over the last 5 or so years, and I'm sure tonight will be no different. The convo always seems to get up for the Zips so it should be pretty raucous. Guess it'll just take another hometown-boy-Jake Kretzer explosion to shut em up haha.

Good luck and go Zips

I'm not sure the CMU loss is going to be looked at as a bad loss when all is said and done. They look like they have righted the ship after a horrid first two months and I think they win the West in a walk. Their RPI will be respectable by the end of the year.

I don't think Akron will get an at-large but only because I think it's going to be very tough to go the rest of the way with one regular season loss which is what I think it will take. There are no great teams in the league but there are no walk-overs either. Every game is tough. But if they go the rest of the year will one loss I think they are in.

Can we buy Akron's football stadium for pennies on the dollar, dismantle it and then put it back together in Athens?

Just asking.

Or what if LeBron just bought an entire university, called it LeBron U.?

They're football stadiums. They're all eyesores. Nobody tells you how ugly they are until you get there and see if for yourself. Neyland looks like somebody put together a set of Lincoln Logs and Legos together with cement and tan paint. Ohio Stadium is a cold, gray sarcophagus with the charm of an emergency room. It appears to be an actual giant elephant. When we visited Papa John's Stadium a few years ago, I swear it was a bunch of red tarps held up with twist ties and baling wire.

So I don't care if it's an eyesore. It's a football stadium. A nice comfy stadium.

Infocision has 30,000 seats, great lower-bowl sightlines, modern locker rooms and concessions and bathrooms, big open concourses.

Things we'll never be able to afford.

Incidentally, Akron couldn't, either.

One of my clients is a contractor retained to patch an Infocision stadium that, he avers, was built too hastily. He showed me photos of aisle railings with crumbling concrete at their bases.

You're absolutely right, but my anti-MAC conspiracy theory dates to the 1994-1995 team (aka Trent's last year). Look at the non-con results and look how good the MAC was then! Ohio really got unfairly punished for losing twice to an excellent Devin Davis-led Miami team, once to Bonzi Wells and BallS and then falling to EMU in the tournament when they had Dial and Boykins.

Won the preseason NIT, climbed to 14th in the AP poll had a very solid MAC season. The reward was a home NIT game. That sucked.

Well, then we can agree to disagree. I prefer Peden and how it (mostly) fits with the campus aesthetically and in size. Clearly if you don't care if a football stadium is an eyesore or not we do not hold the same feelings for OUr campus. You can build that stadium in Akron because the campus sucks compared to what we have to offer.
