1 observation from this interview was a noticeable lower key approach. This coach appears less excitable than last year. Maybe this is all part of his maturing as a coach from the stand point of being more even keeled, AKA the Frank Solich approach.
With 5 freshman, 2 new transfers, and 2 players from LY that didn't play much, this year will be a another challenge, in my opinion, to register a winning record.

He was more low key but a couple of takeaways that I liked to hear:
1. He was very complimentary of Jaaron and said he would "connect" with our fans. I saw him when he was a Alter and he just had this charisma on the court. I always wondered why he went to Houston and didn't stay in Ohio.
2. Said Kenny may have some more scoring options in his repertoire in the MAC that he couldn't use in the other dumb conference. Leads me to believe what I thought, that Izzo only needed him to spot up but he has the skills to work inside.
3. Tony is ready to take that next step. Now that Moss is gone I don't see anyone in the league that can stop him. Even Forsythe will shy away from him down low.
4. He said Dartis and Gollon are both ready to play point. That leads me to believe they're going to play a lot and be on the court which is awesome. Loved that he said Dartis never has a bad day.
5. Treg is ready to lead and could have left but put up more shots than anyone this year.

Without the new guys we still would return improved players in Tony, Treg, Laster and I think even Harley. Add the new guys and I really feel like this is going to be a solid year.

Too bad last year was a waste. Its likely still gonna take another year to build the chemistry and get all the new guys acclimated. But it should be fun watching the growth, and next year could really shape up nicely.

Please explain how last year was a waste? Guys like Treg, Tony, Mike, Khari, Wadley and the walk ons got acclimated on the court and built relationships while guys like Kenny and Jaaron were filling in the blanks off the court. Sure last year's numbers weren't there, but Saul is trying to lay a foundation. The guys who were there last year and carried over to this year are a huge part of that.

I won't label it a waste but it wasn't a building year that we would have hoped. The personnel we had last year was either unable or unwilling to run the offense Saul wanted so we didn't get as much experience as we would have liked. That being said the guys that remain weren't the main offenders and I would hope from practice that they gleaned what Saul wanted to do. From all reports the ball movement that was missing last year has shown up this year in practice which is exciting to me.

In fairness, he's dealt with a lot of adversity in his life in the last 9-10 months. That tough of a stretch will change anyone. I think for Saul, this year has to be more exciting because this is now truly his team, brought in by his staff. I know I'm excited to see this group. They're the foundation of what we'll be watching for the next 3-4 seasons. I'm excited to watch their progress.

SP - "Low Key" - Vs what? Jumping around throwing up horns at the NCAA tourney couple years ago after a big 1st round upset win?

My take on SP's best attributes are his Genuine and Positive personality - not that he is "High Energy/High Key"

I wouldn't read too much into one interview. I think we'll see the old Saul show up in the not too distant future.

Maybe "waste" was a little strong, but I don't think we got much out of it. I can't speak for Kenny and Jaaron since they were on the sideline. But I really didn't see an appreciable jump in the play of Trey Tony Khari and Wadley from the year before, did you? We also had a promising player in Taylor exit the program. It just feels to me like this is is going to be another rebuilding year, which is fine, as long as we see noticeable progress along the way. I couldn't easily see that progress last year.

I thought Treg played a lot better under Saul than he did with JC. Maybe that's just because of the role that JC had him playing, I don't know.

Tony was about the same, maybe a touch better than the year before, but he showed more flashes of how much more dominant he could be.

I was just happy to see Khari on the court, we didn't get to see anything the year prior. He's got some skills that Saul can work with.

Wadley never had a fighter's chance because of his battle with Chron's disease. Other than the freshmen, he's probably the only unknown.

I think we have a good idea of what we're going to get from Kenny and Jaaron just based on observations from others and what Saul has said.

And you put all of that together with the fact that these guys have been around each other for more than a year now and things are looking up. I'm excited to see what this team can do. Especially when you add high basketball IQ guys like Gollon, Block and Dartis into the mix. And having Taylor and Dozier to provide relief in the paint is a huge plus. There will be growing pains for sure, but I think this team will surprise some people.

I don't think you can tell if a rebuilding year was fruitful until the next season. We'll soon find out if last year was a step forward or treadmill work.
