I thought everyone would want to know that George Reid passed unexpectedly Friday. I was part of a post, and I'm going to copy and paste what his wife posted...RIP my friend...
Karla Scoon Reid with George Reid
I am heartbroken to write this: My beloved George died unexpectedly Friday. George and our beautiful boys were my whole world. I know George touched the lives of many, many people in his tragically short 47 years. Today, I spent much of my time trying to reach out to you individually. I’m so sorry to those of you whom I was unable to talk to personally. But know this: George loved you. He was your champion. He was your advisor. Your counselor. Your friend. Now, I ask that you help George continue to father his sons – Quinn and Devin. In the past 10 years, as soon as our son Quinn was born, George fed our children a steady diet of what it takes to be a good man---caring man --- a loving man---a strong man---a kind man. His lessons are found in the inspirational sayings that are taped up on the walls of our home, like the following which Quinn pointed to just last night: “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.” When these nightmarish family tragedies happen, we’re always asked what can we do? I know. I’ve felt helpless when others have suffered losses as profound as mine. So know this: Quinn & Devin have lost more than their father. They lost their hero. Their sun. Their moon. No one can replace George. But I ask all of you to be there for my precious boys. They need to not just hear the life lessons about strong and kind men but they need to be with strong and kind men to know what it takes to be just like their Daddy --- the irreplaceable George Reid. Keep the boys in your prayers. I will post information about funeral arrangements in the coming days. George is counting on you. Rest in Peace baby. I love you.

I am so very sorry to hear this.

George contacted me a short time back and we met for lunch in L.A. two or so months ago. He wanted to start a small club of OHIO people to meet occasionally for friendship. We exchanged email a week or so ago about setting a time for the first meeting some time later this month.

George was a great, smart, congenial, generous, fun loving guy. He will be missed.

My best regards to his wife and kids.

Monroe

What a lovely sentiment. Farewell, Big George.

Sorry to hear that. Does anyone know what he died from? Also, where was he living and what was he doing? That is way too young.

I am really sorry to hear this. It is hard to believe that Sean Carlson, Robert and George have died within the last two years not to mention everything John Rhodes has been through.

After leaving Athens he went on to Florida State, American Univ., Syracuse and most recently at Southern California.

Every once and awhile George would show up and play in the middle court at the old Grove Center. I'd often get sucked into that court due to my height and he'd just toy with me. And he was nice about it. Knew I couldn't hang. Would let me get some shots off and etc. Didn't embarrass me.

I just remember him being a good dude. Such a bummer to hear.

(And, scares the crap out of me as we are basically the same age.)

I believe that Henry Smirh died too. He only played a year or two and transferred to St. Joes in Philadelphia. I was on a post recently that George was on and he mentioned Hindu had died. So so sad.

I just came across this memorial page and thought I would share it with you guys. It seems as though he had a heart attach.

Played with George in a local tournament up at Trimble shortly after he graduated on a team coached by Ron Ricketts. We had a hell of a team and the organizers of the tournament weren't sure what to do. They huddled and made up a rule that said "if you have two guys who aren't from Athens County - George obviously wasn't and I had recently moved here from Akron - only one could be on the court at a time." The big man said, "ok, I got mine, now you go get yours." We ran the table much to the chagrin of the local boys. RIP big man.

Here's a current post from a coworker at USC. She's set up a go fund me for George's boys.

That's a very interesting story, Alan. Thanks so much for sharing it. I never knew George Reid on a personal basis, but reading these stories about him make me wish that I had.

Prayers for him and his family.
