I know it seems like all of us are doing the "well I never really liked him..." after he is gone speech, but I think many of us were trying really hard to stay positive about Ryan the 2nd half of the season. Could be mono, but either way I was more than a little concerned about him heading into this season.

All? No way - lots of people were fans of his play on here myself included. The water was so poisoned that he began looking at options. Sometimes you can get down a path that there is no going back.

I liked Ryan and thought he could have been a very good player for us down the road but of all the players to lose he will be the easiest to replace with the guys that we have coming in. He wasn't great at any one thing but he was good at a lot of things. I hope for his sake he doesn't turn into a "runner" and settles in at a program that fits what he is looking for because he can be very valuable.

Maybe it was mono, maybe it was the locker room or ... What ever the issue, if you could not see that Ryan just did not seem to be into it last year you were not looking very close.

Even this did not get much reaction out of him - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltdC2c0vHzM

Afterward just strolls to the bench....

Can't believe it, but I agree with Monroe here. Guys who are not here anymore shouldn't cause him to leave months later.

I can't imagine he left without having something he thought was better in mind. I'll be interested to see where he lands, and how he eventually does...

If you watch the video frame by frame you might have a different take. I do. Ryan moves toward Ndour as he heads back down the floor with a smile on his face and what I would consider the intent to high five/offer congratulations or whatever and Mo just blows by him. Disappointed, Ryan just strolls to the bench.

Don't just watch Taylor's reaction on Mo's game winner..watch his reaction on any monster dunk he, himself had. Never showed emotion. I always thought it was just his personality of being aloof or calm and cool under pressure. Perhaps he just didn't care. Either way, he was going to be behind Simmons, and Tony offensively as an option. Could have been a factor.

Unless he felt the coaching staff didn't have his back.

maybe he just wasn't happy, period. A couple of people I went to high school with were popular, outgoing, got good grades, etc. and came to OU and never assimilated. They stopped being outgoing and social, started going home every weekend, even arranged their schedule so they could have long weekends, and by the end of their freshmen year both had transferred out. Hated their time at OU. Hated it. They both went on and got their degrees elsewhere and lived happily ever after. Sometimes, these things just happen, even in the greatest place on earth.

Why wait so long to notify the coaches? Not a good look there.

Who says he didn't notify the coaches? I heard it from an AD employee who was told about it by a coach.

Didn't Saul say he was blindsided, or words to that effect? It appears Taylor didn't have enough respect for Saul to sit down and talk with him about his options and about his "gut feeling." Like a lot of folks on here I thought Taylor had a bright future at OHIO and would continue to make significant contributions to the program. The way this came about -- and the timing -- leads me to believe that Taylor is very immature. If I had to speculate I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred somewhere closer to home. IUPUI perhaps? Testicle Tech? Guess we'll wait and see. I'd be dumbfounded if Michgone had any interest in him. However, if he's the player to be named later in the Kaminski trade, it'll go down in history as the basketball equivalent of
Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio. Go Cubs!

Edit: Excuse me I got Michigan and Michigan State mixed up, but you know that's understandable since one of those schools always gets OHIO and Ohio State mixed up. Perhaps, it was Freudian on my part. ;-)

Maybe Taylor didn't have respect for Saul, or maybe he felt guilty about letting him down and couldn't face him. You're excusing a teenager of lacking maturity? There's a stretch.

Going to college is a life changing event, not everyone responds positively to life's big changes. It happens.

What this issue requires is reporting. If there's a cancer or bullying going on in a housing or social situation that's causing one or multiple players to leave, it's starting to sound like a case for a reporter.
Do we have any in Athens? (I've never seen much more than puff pieces about the program in 15 years I've been in Athens).
Arkley? He's a good, knowledgable writer, but will he investigate something like this?

I doubt there's an issue any different than any other college. It seems there are 500+ transfers in basketball every year, meaning at least 1.5 per year per school. I think Ohio has been well below that average. Most players have stuck around despite the coaching changes.

That's risky this late in the process, but it he moves to a place where he is more comfortable then good for him. We shouldn't hold it against him.

Its not obvious at all.

In fact I would say the opposite is true. Based on the timing of his decision and the lack of a transfer destination I think its obvious that this decision has nothing to do with basketball at all.

He certainly limited his options with the timing, but he can take time off, too, and wait it out if he doesn't like his current opportunities.

Closer to home, that's kind of what I expected. I still wouldn't rule out IUPUI or even Depaul.

Over 700 transfers last year and well over that this year. only 341 D1 schools. The Math is huge. For some reason Taylor did not fit. It all comes out sooner or later. For now, FOr the most part, Saul has his guys in the locker room. Whether the guys who remain become leaders or divide the team is up to them.

Watching the team dynamic last year was painful. Watching guys loaf back down the court and other guys hustle back and take fouls for the loafers was a new experience that I was unused to seeing since the culture change in 08. Watching guys get in other guys grills and the loafers reaction for same was an eye opener

I am not sure what you are worried about, looks like he is grinning ear to ear as Mo runs by him ....just looking for something? How about maybe....unlike Saul who was later taken to task by Hurley.... just maybe Taylor realized there was time on the clock or thought the game was over and he headed for the line to shake up...Hoopers react different to different situations... Let's not go looking for stuff to hang kids out with..... Taylor is not coming back. He added to the team while he was here and kept his grades up. Tough year to be here...maybe he sees something else and maybe he knows the writing is on the wall..who knows. Better yet...bygones now, who cares?

purely anecdotal observation from a quick glance at social media- the Frosh 5 seem to be bonding very well and all sound very excited about being on the team and at OU in general. A strong bond within that class and what appears to be seamless integration with the rest of the team has me thinking attitudes and effort will be much improved this season.

Of course, everything appeared to be all unicorns and rainbows last summer too so you never know.
