Wow those look great! I wonder if the new seats will alter the capacity of the arena? I guess it would depend on the dimensions of the replacement seats. If they are bigger I am guessing capacity would decline. Also when looking closely it almost appeared the seats were padded? Maybe I'm wrong. I thought they would just be plastic.

Those look like the same shade of green that was previously around the lower ring sections. They seem to do a fair job of blending in when they are empty.

They should have considered dropping capacity down with the new seats but I doubt it. I notice a sealant on the concrete from the picture posted. The missing piece is a hanging scoreboard and that should be a year away most at tops. I bet the reason why Ohio hasn't upgraded its camera equipment yet has to do with all of the physical upgrades that are in progress at the moment in the Convo.

Can't drop capacity because of graduation. Scoreboard - they haven't even done the engineering study. As for wider seats, that would require reseating season tickets which is a nightmare.

As I understand it, Alan. The engineering study would not take long once commissioned. We are talking about a month or two, not another decade! :-)

I hear they will put in a hanging scoreboard when they sell the naming rights to the Convo, what's it been 3 years since we announced the project.

True, but I wonder if they may be considering doing this someday. If there was/is enough demand, could be a bigger revenue generator (also could backfire).

The logic in keeping the Convo capacity high because of student graduation has never made sense to me when there are multiple graduation ceremonies depending on what academic college a student graduates from.

That to me sounds logical to wait for a naming rights partner but its inconsistent with what the media reports have said of the athletic department moving forward with a scoreboard in The Convo within the next year or two.

Yes, I have heard from two AD employees that the scoreboard is definite in the next couple of years. Sounds like Pepsi is paying. New scoreboard for Peden next year...also Pepsi.

10 year pouring rights contracts are extremely lucrative with today's fountain drink prices. Makes perfect sense that a beverage company would "pay" for the scoreboards.

Arkley has some great pictures of the the new seats on his twitter feed, shows a side by side comparison of the old v the new. I think the new seats look amazing, really excited to see how it plays out on TV.

I hope we never see them on TV for obvious reasons.

The darker and uniform color masks the seating incline in the upper bowl. Before that made the arena look oversized when it wasn't packed. On close examination from one of Arkley's pictures the very top row was removed. There may be 500 less seats in the arena when complete.

Not sure where you get the last row was removed.

look at the concrete columns at the top, you'll see the old seats go up one row to rap around the columns where the new seats are flush.

Although I am not positive, I think the top row with the wrap around effect was only on the side court. His picture shows the corner sections going from side court towards the end court.

The wrap spans the entire arena. Each section has a wrap of 20 seats except the extreme corner sections. There are 28 sections. Removing the wrap then pulls out 560 seats from the arena.

For the ESPN camera requirement the university is creating a control room so that could take out additional seating if done opposite the sky box.

Quote:

Ohio is one of six MAC schools still not on-board yet with ESPN’s digital network. Every MAC school is obligated — per last year’s new television agreement with ESPN — to eventually produce more than 30 live events per year for the ESPN3 digital platform.

The issue is equipment. Other MAC schools were closer to reaching ESPN’s standards that Ohio was.

Schaus said Ohio’s plan is to be up and running with the digital, streaming network in time for the 2016-17 school year. Making that happen will require HD capable cameras, a control room, more equipment and personnel.

Ohio can field aspiring broadcast students to fill out some of the personnel needs, but the department will need “several hundreds of thousands of dollars” to make itself ESPN ready, Schaus said.

“It’s a MAC requirement, so we will be doing it. But we also want to do it,” Schaus said.

On a non seat subject...how about the possibility of ribbon signs all around the Convo against the walls at the mid level, right below the upper level? This could be used for statistics, advertising, etc. I would think advertisers would jump on this. And it might enhance the ability to show stats.

I have questions/thoughts on this idea:

*How high would those have to be to be well seen? People stand in the front of those areas a lot during games, and we already have that issue with the court side boards.

*How much would those scoreboards potentially be in the way of the front row seats in the upper level? Being a holder of two such seats, I have an interest in that.

Beyond that, as a general idea, I think it's great. I would think they could be put in front of the current media area for sure. Or another thought might be in front of the scorer's table and the Bobcat Black seats. Yet another thought might be to put the ribbon boards along the same baseline areas where the current scoreboards are now, but at the top, so they'd be above those who seem to like to stand in those spots. A lot of information and advertising could be relayed if they were across the majority of that area. I'm not sure how much visual interference it might create for shooters though, or how much regulation there is in the NCAA for those locations of an arena.

I'd never really considered ribbon scoreboards in the Convo. That would be very cool. My first thought is right below the media seats or that level would be perfect. As OU Country mentions, people standing in front of that would be an issue. The tuba's for the 110 block the camera for the livestream.
I really wish the AD could find a way to fit the 110 into the end of the court on the vistor's baseline. That end is smaller so they don't really fit, but if you could somehow fit them there, I feel that would be ideal.

I've seen crazier things happen.
