I was just looking at the Football board and they have an interesting series of topics about our favorite all-time players by position. After the nominations are set they set up polls with the finalists. Since this is the offseason and there isn't much to talk about this seemed like a fun undertaking for basketball.

I'll start it off with a nomination of Jason Terry who was an unsung part of the Gary Trent teams and seemed to be a little bit of a scapegoat whenever the team struggled. But he was always one of my favorites.

NOMINATIONS
Jason Terry
Leon Williams
Howard Jolliff
Patrick Flomo
Kenneth Van Kempen
John Devereaux
Paul Storey
Greg Mcdivitt
John Schroeder

Two things I'll never forget about Terry: coming out of the JAR after an Ohio-Akron game with SBH and seeing Jason, his equally tall brother and parents squeezing into a two-door, too-small sedan; and how he must be the only 7-footer to ever line up during an opposing player's free throw third from the low block.

Also had the pleasure, several years later, to guard him in a Gus Macker in Newark, giving up over a foot.

Shaun McVicker. Always made the most of his 5 fouls.

Definitely Flomo!

One of my favorite regular season moments was the UNC game in... 01-02?... when Flomo was blocking a bunch of shots and completing a bunch of putback dunks and Brad Daugherty and whoever was doing the PBP were basically shouting FLOMOOOOO! anytime he did anything above the rim. It was amazing.

Would John Devereaux be considered a center or a power forward?

<------------- (USA Today cover)
Favorite Bobcat.

He certainly was not as dominate as the guys listed above but he did develop into a good center for us by his Senior year. His ability to box out, set picks and that nice little mid-range shot really was the perfect fit for that 2010 team. He was exactly the kind of center that team needed.

Related: Looking at what Greg Monroe has done in the NBA, it is really impressive to look back at how that 2010 Ohio team handled him. He filled up his stats but we didn't let him beat us. We DEFINITELY frustrated him. In addition to his points, rebounds and assists, he also had 7 turnovers and fouled out. KVK and Devo both were important in guarding Monroe. For two guys who each struggled with fouls at various times in their careers, it is a little crazy to consider they only combined for 6 fouls in that Georgetown game while tasked with guarding Monroe.

I've seen crazier things happen.

And a couple of those on KvK were questionable calls. I rewatch that game a lot and you pretty much nailed it.

I did shots with KVK one night at the Pub a couple months after the Georgetown game. He was out with a buddy/former neighbor of mine. Really nice guy. He's got my vote.

Denny Rusch.....George Green........Delvar Barrett......

Regarding Jason Terry, I thought that Larry Hunter ruined his game and his psyche. In his later years, Larry had this tendency to foster a "one star only" system to the detriment of the team, in my opinion.

If you consider him a center, he'd be my pick, but he was probably more of a power forward. Never seen a kid progress to the extent he did over 4 years. Danny Nee once said the biggest mistake he ever made was not redshirting Jon. I think he only played 2 years of competitive ball before coming here.

So where we putting John Devereaux? He played the middle with Vic Alexander at forward more than the other way around.

If center then the conversation just ended - It's Devereaux

That's what I was thinking although I wasn't 100% sure. I'm not sure it's as cut-and-dried that he's the winner though. The aforementioned Howie Jolliff and Leon Williams have to be in the running. Jolliff was before most of our times so I doubt he wins but his credentials are pretty darn impressive.

Geez guys, I guess it's left to an oldster to nominate Paul Storey. He teamed with Jerry Jackson, Don Hilt, Mike Haley and Charlie Gill in taking the Bobcats to the Elite 8. Storey was a scorer, defender, rebounder and TOUGH. He's already in Ohio's Athletics Hall of Fame. I hereby nominate Paul Storey.

At about 6'5" I put Storey in the same category as Fred Slaughter who was the under-sized center on UCLA's first national title team.

Making a rule that if you are in the HOF you don't need a seconding.

Sadly, even though he only played a little more than 10 years before I came to Athens (think Brandon Hunter to today's freshmen), I don't know much about him. So I looked him up and came across this article.

http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/varsityohio/spec-rel/02...

Love the following quote:

"Louisville was a real hard fought game. We played them twice in the regular season. They won on their court, and we beat them on ours. Really either team could have won." Forward Mike Haley said. "But Kentucky? We knew it was over at half. We were faster and we were the better team."

This was true. Know why? There's a very sociological explanation.

I also give my now unnecessary second to Paul Storey. I was actually getting ready to nominate him myself when I saw Mike's post.
