Former Bobcat ('78-'82) is taking his Defiance hoops squad to the D-2 state championship game tomorrow against Cleveland Central Catholic...good luck. And best wishes to former Bobcat Sonny Johnson (2003), whose Garfield Heights Bulldogs came up just short of a birth in the championship game, losing to Westerville South in today's D-1 semifinal...

COngrats. Good to see those guys giving back to the game

on an unrelated matter....I would hate those "births" in the tourney. Messy stuff

Going to need a lot more towels than normal.

Kirk was one of my favorite Bobcats.

On now. Describes Defiance as "a very patient team". Should be a good one. Fl southern, Defiance CC looks to be a good match up so far

Defiance wins in OT.

Cleveland CC goes up four w/ about half a minute left on a breakaway dunk. Player gets called for tech for hanging on rim; Defiance hits both FT, gets possession and ties on bucket with 5 seconds left.

It appeared, watching on TV, that each CC player had six inches on the player he were guarding.

As always, good to see the public school win. I'm sure Cleveland Central Catholic will recruit well and return.

Maybe they recruit at CCC, maybe they don't. I don't know. I can tell you the school is located in an awful neighborhood and the gym they play in seems 100 years old. Most of the kids come from disadvantaged backgrounds. If a catholic school wants to give them a hand, I don't have a problem with it.

My problem is with the public schools, like Northland and Pickerington Central in the Columbus area, who have kids transfer in and out for sports so often they should install revolving doors. A coaching buddy of mine says that even Newark will be playing the transfer game next year, getting a guard from a well off Franklin County school to play for Quackenbush.

At any rate, congrats to Kirk Lehman and Defiance on a job well done.

That was a great game and I commend the official for the hang on the rim, chin up, pull the legs up and yell after the dunk T. Should happen a bit more in the NCAA.Seen my fair share of bent rims, shattered backboards and such. It does not take a full ride on the monkey bars to dunk the ball. In fact you can dunk without actually grabbing the rim. The rest is all for show.

The game was pretty great. Defiance beat DUnbar the night before and came back to play a pretty athletic team in CC. Nice offense that afforded open shots and hustling D. They were definitely less athletic but found a way to win. CC coach was the camera darling on the sidelines but COach Lehman got the job done. Well Done. Congrats.

I was impressed with Defiance's interior passing in this game. I was also impressed by #10's willingness to take/make (or miss) a big trey - he stepped up when others didn't seem willing to do so.

When Kirk played here back in the day, he certainly played with defiance in regard to the other team on the floor. One of the Convo favorites in a long line of very good guards. Glad to see him doing so well. He was back in town for the alumni thing last football season; first time in a while.

Kirk was our PG during my undergrad years. Was definitely one of the bright spots during this time. Congratulations to Kirk!

I agree completely, but it seems a lot of people don't. The call has gotten a lot of national attention on ESPN and USAToday and if you ready the comments under the Facebook posts, most of them say it is an awful call. I don't know how they figure that if they watch the video.

Same here. Junior year we beat (I think it was Miami) - had a semi-court storm. I was getting on a Miami player - nothing vulgar - just a "not in our house" kind of thing. Kirk (who I knew), stepped up to me and said/yelled, "that's not how we act." He was right - I never forgot - class guy (and I'm sure the Miami player appreciated it).

It was the only call that could have been made. What that gif does not show is that after he hung on the rim, he flexes and yells. That was an easy and correct call.

That was what I saw from the baseline cam. I do not see any dangerous player beneath him nor did I in real time. He was on a break and deliberately pulled up till his legs almost came up to the stancions.

HS refs are gonna call that especially when coupled with showing out after it is done. That gif carefully omits the post dunk yell that was coupled together. If there was any doubt in the stripes mind to let that go the next 2 seconds made up his mind. Too much potential for equipment failure or hands slipping off the rim and the player landing flat on his back. Ever seen a kid grab a rin and his hands slip off. AAU tourney and a concussion with a possible skull fracture will cure you of supporting that. Even worse is the rim that is tweaked or broken causing a move in venue. Seen both...changed my mind on the efficacy and enforcement of the rule.

The kid knew it was coming though. He's even looking at the ref before he hits the ground. The funny thing is from that video it doesn't look like it was that ref that made the call. In fact he appears to nod his head like it was okay. The thing is though IMO he didn't need to grab the rim at all. I'm not sure I make that call in that situation though without knowing more about the whole game.

While many Bobcat fans remember Kirk as Kirk--- his teammates and coaches called him and continue to call him by the nickname of FACE. His""babyface"will be remembered by many
I called Dale Bandy right after the win and Dale said, "tell Face I said congratulations "

Once again--THERE ARE NO FORMER BOBCATS-- JUST LOYAL BOBCATS..............

I covered a Defiance game about two-thirds of the way into the season where they defended as well as any team I've seen this year (held a team that shoots three-pointers at a 46 percent clip to the teens), so I wasn't all that surprised when they beat Dunbar and Central Catholic. They didn't win the Western Buckeye League this year, but they were the best team.

Kirk was a good guy and a true "quarterback" on the floor. This thread made me curious as to what happened to his brother, who played at the same time for Toledo. Google search turned this up:

Interesting that he coached(coaches) for Central Catholic. Is that the same one that Kirk just beat?
