Looking at his stat line thus far this year (on top of witnessing his play live a lot), comparing that with last year, why is he regressing? FG% down from 41% last year to 29% this year, 3 point FG% down from 30% last year to 17% this year, rebounds are up and assists are about the same, but his turnover rate has doubled from 1.3/game to 2.7/game. I know the stat lines are a small sample size so far, but it's looking pretty rough right now. Is he pressing? Is it lack of focus? Was Kellogg this instrumental in keeping his head on straight during the season?

It's been said on a lot of threads here and I agree: until we get better PG play, we're going to struggle. Hopefully he gets his senior season turned around.

One thing I've noticed is that much of the time we set up Stevie near the hash along the right sideline which seems odd to me. It means that he is always dribbling to his left.

He has definitely struggled with the 3 point shot, which was never his specialty to begin with. The spike in turnovers does not concern me much, I think that is a team issue (and result of small sample size) more than anything. 5 for 29 from 3 point is the key to an his underwhelming season.

He's always been okay as a catch and shoot guy but struggles whenever he takes it off the dribble. Not a lot of kick outs his way this year. He did have a wide open one last night that he missed from the right side.

Playing for his third coach in four years of college probably isn't helping. Whereas most players are comfortable with their program's system by their senior year, he's now learning yet another new system. Have to imagine it's at least a contributing factor.

The previous regimes overestimated how much Stevie is capable of doing on the floor. Said it 2 years ago on this board and many disagreed with me at the time, but Stevie is strictly a 10-12 minute come off the bench back-up point guard.

Not his fault that he's been put in the position to play 30 minutes a game. Watching what is happening to our guard play makes you really appreciate DJ and Nick more. We don't have a point guard that can drive the lane, dish, create contact and get to the line. Guard play is the key to winning championships in college basketball. A team can overcome a ton of weaknesses if it has guards who understand the game, get others active and don't shoot 17% from 3-point range.

If the guards don't figure it out soon a .500 season will be tough to attain.
I'm understanding more why Coach Phillips talks about the future so much and how he sees the program and roster in 2-3 years.

It is what it is this year and nothing can be done to fix the point guard issue.

FearLeon......Great read....You are right on. It's going to be a long season. Then next year will be more of the same as we only have 1 true PG signed up.

One true point guard (we think, though most of us have never seen him play) next year is better than none this year. Point guard is the hardest position to find, in my opinion. Few college teams have more than one truly true point guard. There are a lot of players who are called point guards because they are short.

When you tell me 5'10 and 5'11 (cough, cough), I already draw certain conclusions.

(Compare those figures to one-handed, skying, monster-jam put back by the freshman.)

I really wonder, once Ryan Taylor is recovered from his bout with mono, how long it will be that he starts at the 2, and Stevie or Bean come off the bench.

OUVan, BINGO!

Anyone who watches college basketball can see that the most effective 3-point shooters catch and shoot. They are spread along the 3-point arc and catch drive and dish passes from penetrators. Very few are actually really good off the dribble.

Can't break down a defense if you don't penetrate. And on top of that once you penetrate you have to be fully aware of ALL your options.

No kidding.

Nothing pisses me off like BAD basketball.

Going to the hole with your head down is one thing.

Doing it with no court awareness and no backup plan is the epitome of BAD basketball. PG's got to run the show NOT be the show.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

This is pretty much the bottom line. Plus he's been dealing with several minor injuries this year.

KObe Bryant is chucking this year. The way his shooting % falls in a game as his minutes rise, espec as the minutes go over 30, must be remarkable.

And he's always believed that any shot he takes is a good shot.

But he has a remarkable sense of where people are and has had an amazing ability to find open teammate when he's gotten himself seemingly trapped in the air on a drive.

Head up and awareness of teammates positions, indeed.

Some people actually believe that basketball is a game played in coordination with teammates.

Taylor comes into the game shooting 7-41 (17%) from three and yesterday he goes 1-4. He hits the three and does that stupid spin and backpeddle by the bench and looks into the crowd all wide eyed running down the floor kinda hunched over and flexing like it was his 10th three of the game or something. Just stop it already! You made a three. Great.

Usually you tell someone in this situation to act like he's been there before. Unfortunately, ST hasn't been there before frequently enough this season.

Honestly, anything to get himself playing better is fine with me. He's a huge energy guy there and it's hard to be an energy guy if you're struggling as badly as he has been this season.
