MC is picked preseason #20 in the nation in NCAA Division III by Basketball Times. That may or may not mean much. We played Wooster a few years ago, also rated in the top 20, and it wasn't competitive.

(Yes 695, I know you think that any pickup team at the local Y could beat a Div. III team--I don't agree with you. And Ruck, well you know...)

But at least MC is a fundamentally sound team that will give our team a work out.

Question: Do you think this game will be treated more like a regular season game than an exhibition game, with it being Fathers' Weekend and it being the new coaching staff's first game? If so, does that mean the 110 will be there? Usually, the 110 doesn't play for exhibition games.

What kind of crowd do you expect? If it's promoted like a regular season game to the Dads, we could possibly have 5000-6000 there. We'll have a few hundred from Marietta.

Since it's Saul's first game, I expect it to be treated as such. I feel like the players can't wait to get out there and play for him.

As for the crowd, it should be decent given that it's Father's Day weekend and Marietta is so close. Hopefully the student body is as excited about Saul as most of us on this board are.

This isn't any old exhibition game. This is a matchup against the Marietta Patriots. This game revisits an age old city rivalry between Athens and Marietta that spans over a century and has most recently been highlighted in an advertisement in Southeast Ohio Magazine asking: "Hey Athens? Where's your Best Western? Sleep Marietta!"

Marietta isn't going to give Saul Phillips any help in figuring out who to guard or what to prepare for, they even took all the 2013-14 statistics off their website. I'll tell you right now you gotta watch out for Brennan McKean. The wing out of Jeromesville is a threat.

It's Dad's Weekend, so an eating tip is certainly appropriate as over 1/4 of the Bobcat student body is spending their first fall in Athens. Dad's, you can't go wrong with a trip to Larry's Dawg House. It's a ways out Union Street, but you'll thank Larry for his foresight when you are walking off that footlong coney.

As I recall, we had a regular season game against Marietta in Dec. several years ago at the Convo when they were in the D-III Top 10. We won but it wasn't a blowout...

Marietta will be a very good ballclub in Division III this year but I don't expect them to be able to match up well with the Cats. The difference between a scholarship athlete at the D1 level is much different than that of non-scholarship athletes at the DIII level. Cats by 30.

We played them in the regular season in 11-12. I was there. It was no contest.

yeah that's right the score was more lopsided than I remembered. I made a special point of attending 'cuz Marietta was my dad's alma mater, and I covered the Pioneers as a student reporter for WOUB back in ancient times. Coach back then was Ohio grad Phil Roach, a good guy as I recall.

Marietta will play well, they always field a good team. Ohio had trouble with a bad Heidelberg team last year so I wouldn't right off the pioneers. While the gulf between the good and bad in d3 is much greater then d1 there still are good teams and players in d3. Many athletes who know they won't play pro but can get into a Wooster or Ohio Wesleyan(both very elite schools)will go there rather then a lower quality d1 school.

How are you quantifying "many" in that claim? 5%? 50%?

Marietta will not play well. They are D-III. Ohio can name the score. I can say with certainty that there is virtually no local chatter from MC fans this time around. MC is a nice little school that only charges its athletes around 100K+ in order to continue playing sports for four more years.

A guy in my office was the starting QB at Marietta. He had to quit the team at the end of his junior year after his 8th concussion. He also had $120,000 in student loans and a Business Administration degree. He admits that he was caught up in the sales process of "playing college football" as a high school senior and regrets that decision every month when he makes that loan payment. A large percentage of the less than 1400 student population are varsity athletes. I think D-III schools unfairly target kids to continue their glory days and keep playing sports.

Maybe there was a place for these small, private colleges decades ago, but I can't believe people would spend $40,000/yr to get a business or education degree. I understand there are specialty programs, such as Marietta's Petroleum Engineering Dept, that are worth every penny. I just don't agree with the overpriced general diploma.

Personally, I don't think too much of the quality of basketball at the D-III level. Marietta College recruited me as a high school senior, which is enough to convince me it's not that good.

My final decision when deciding on colleges was between Ohio and Marietta. When I got both financial aid packages back from both schools, Marietta ended up being the cheaper school to attend. I'm not one to toot my own horn much but I had a pretty good academic profile and one school recognized it and one did not. Marietta also gave me the opportunity to play sports at the collegiate level that I would not have had in Athens.

Now I say this as an avid Ohio supporter, I was in Athens every home Saturday for football games and made the short trip down Route 7 for many basketball games and still do when I can. I do however not regret choosing Marietta for my education and it is possible to attend the school at a reasonable price if you do your due diligence academically and put in the work.

Simply to throw him a bone. This game is not going to impact rotation, nor continuity. Looks like the kid is not going to get the waiver (assuming no word is bad news). He will be practicing with the team and helping them prepare - so why not let him get some time? fyi - the same reason the walk-on should get some measurable minutes.

We can argue whether he should or shouldn't - and I understand and appreciate your view.

The question remains is he eligible to play in an exhibition?

As someone who has had a sibling play for Marietta, and saw the pride and amount of hard work that went into this level of play, I find this stance unfairly harsh.
