"Elite shooter" -Saul Phillips

I'm sure this news will disgruntle the Bean Willis haters on this board. Anyone notice all the 3's he hit in Canada?

I think Bean has been wrongly recruited his whole career. He was recruited to Texas Tech as a PG, I'm assuming. Not sure if JC initially wanted him to be a PG here, but that's how it sort of played out until the season went longer and we needed another shooter outside of Kellogg. He's a shooter in a PG body.

Bean converted me into a Bean fan mid-way through last season. I was one of his harshest critics. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact he was playing a position that he had no business playing: point guard.

Dude is a shooter. Let him shoot.

He's a fine secondary option at PG. I agree that he's more of a shooter/scorer than distributor.

Yeah... there's just a lot of people here who root against him.

Yeah... there's just a lot of people here who root against him.

I know a guy who openly roots against our football team. This really isn't that much different.

Not even close. I wasn't high on Bean last year. My reaction to all of this? "Great! I hope he does it in games!"

And who do you know who openly roots against the football team? Because it isn't me.

Seemed like half way through the season last year he finally got comfortable and started making positive plays and shooting well. I hope that continues. I also hope the turnover number stays low. If he isn't turning it over and is shooting like he did the second half of last year, he will have a very good season.

I wouldn't call myself a Bean hater but I'm also one that still sees his limitations. He's a much better 2 than he is a 1. He had a very good last third of the season because he was used as a scorer much more than a creator. I think it just took us a while to figure out how to best utilize him. But he's never going to lead the conference in assists. The last ten games or so he was tremendous from the outside.

I think sometimes people forget that players who sit out an entire year don't always come back red hot. Sometimes it takes a while to get back to playing at game speed.

Also, I can't imagine JC's coaching style of yanking a player off the court the second he makes a mistake and then complaining to him in an exasperated manner as he walks to the bench is effective for every player. I'm guessing guys like Bean and Ivo don't respond to it well at all.

Good article about Bean. It also gives you a great look at Saul's coaching style compared to JC.

“(Phillips) makes it easy for you to buy in because he don’t criticize you. I mean he knows how to jump on you, but then again his coaching strategy is so good,” he added. “He gets on you, but you know it comes from a place of respect.”

“I want him to embrace a little more of a scoring role, a little less of a distributing role with this group. I’ve talked to him about that.”

Agreed. It reminds me of something a baseball manager once said. I think it might have been Casey Stengel, and here's a rough paraphrase: "Some players need a kick in the ass after they make a mistake and others need a pat on the back and reassurance. Good managers know which is which."

The more you read comments from players off last year's team, the more you realize how lucky we are that Boston College dropped a contract on JC's lap. Thank you BC. #SaulBall

Was the person who tallied those a Bean counter?

With Nick gone, we need someone who can hit the three. Sounds like Bean might be the man.

I hope you continue to think this way throughout the next couple of seasons.

Having fun/being relaxed doesn't always equal wins.....but I"m really hoping it does with this crew :)

Again, everyone sounds exactly like they did last preseason... Getting along is easy before you've played a game, or someone is on the bench more than they feel they should be. I hope the chemistry is as good as everyone says, but last year's chemistry was supposed to be a big improvement and we defended the Convo at a slightly embarrassing level.

After a disappointing 1/6 3 point showing from Bean against FGCU, Bean has shot at a 45% clip from 3 in the two games at home since then. He is leading the Bobcats in scoring at 19.3 PPG this yr.
