Awesome news...and a little surprising (to me) this early. I figured he'd want until his overseas career slowed down.

I was happy to see this on Twitter as well.

The number of Ohio degrees earned by the six seniors from the class of 2013 as of the end of this summer should be eight. All will have at least one. That might be more impressive than three NCAA tournament wins, two MAC tourney titles and a MAC regular season title.

Players/coaches/staff ahead of the 2013s helped set a tone and it seems like it is continuing with the 2014s and beyond.

Edit: original said two MAC tourney wins -- incorrect. Two tourney titles!

That's what I was thinking but his comments state that he only has one degree. It's a little ambiguous so it probably means just one this time around.

Right, sorry. One this time but this one isn't his first.

It's great that theses former student athletes are finishing up their education. Let's not get too excited about it, though. That's why they came to school and it's the minimum that they could and should do. I remember when I was in high school trying to defend my actions to my parents. I told them they should be proud of me because I didn't take drugs and get arrested like other kids. They informed me it took a little more than not getting arrested for them to be proud of me.

No. Getting a college degree is something worth commending. It's NOT the minimum someone can do; it's something quite beyond the minimum. And it's especially noteworthy when a person leaves and decides to come back and finish when they didn't really have to.

I agree mainly with giacomo here. We are an educational institution and athletics is an extracurricular activity. While it's a good thing when players who haven't graduated come back and finish their school work, it's not something that should receive a standing o, but a pat on the back might be appropriate.

We're an institution of higher learning and one of the best in the country at that. Nobody is forcing anyone to come here; indeed, many who even want to cannot. Anyone who leaves with a diploma is deserving of congratulations.

Circumstances should determine what the level of congratulations should be....I would say that DJ deserves more than a pat on the back. If I recall, I think he was the first to attend from his family. He had a kid while in school. Had a full academic and athletic schedule. The pressure of being one of the few "star" athletes on campus. Then in order to complete his degree, he is coming back. I'm sure part of that is Court Street driven, but still very very impressive.

Finishing a degree is good for anyone, athlete or not. However, being a scholarship athlete removes the burden of figuring out how to pay the tab, so the least you can do is take advantage of the great opportunity and finish what you started. Anything but getting your degree is wasting that huge opportunity. If you go on to play professionally and make millions, maybe not. But for the other 99.9%, yes.

DJ isn't making millions, but it is very possible he is making 100k+ in Europe. That is not a figure to scoff at. That is more than 99.9% of college graduates will make upon GRADUATION from almost any University with any undergraduate degree.

For someone with a child to support in the United States, it would be very easy to take that paycheck and not go back to get the degree and personally I wouldn't blame anyone who did that.
Our culture has developed a mindset of "you have to have a degree to be successful" and I personally believe that is garbage. If you can develop a meaningful career that can support yourself and your loved ones without a degree, why not?

...

Congrats DJ. I know his mom is proud. From the impressions I got while he was here, she was expecting a degree and wasn't going to take no for an answer.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Didn't he have to pay for his final classes, or does Ohio have a policy about covering returning athletes?

In DJ's case, he did the right thing by going to Europe. He's making good money and will be exposed to different cultures. You're right that a college degree isn't necessary to be successful. But if you don't have a degree, you had better have some skills that employers want, or be an entrepreneur. My point is that if you have a scholarship and are not getting a degree, it was a waste. How did that experience help you grow? There are kids who don't belong on a college campus that have athletic scholarships, but that's another debate. How long will DJ's career be in Europe? At some point he has to join the rest of us. I sing no sad songs for those guys who didn't finish. It was their choice. What advice would you give your son or nephew?

That's a great question. I want to say that the scholarship/tuition is only covered for when the athlete is on campus. I'm sure there is some NCAA rule on that and I have no idea what it is.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the way I read it is he will finish next summer, meaning 2015. Tweets were sent in October. Usually don't finish your last class in October. Also says who is going to meet me this summer coming up? So did he finish this year or plan to come back 2015. Nothing meant by this just curious.

for those interested, here's a link to DJ's stats in Russia. Through 5 games he's averaging 26 minutes, 11.2pts, 9.4asst, 4.2reb, 2.4stl. He's 41%(9/22) from inside the arc, 44%(12/27) from outside. New league, same Coop.
