Well of course Treadwell is preseason MAC POY, he's at least 27 years old now, right?

For my money, Julius Brown ought to be MAC preseason POY.

That seems likes a reasonable assessment of the MAC for this year. The few previews I've seen so far all have Ohio picked #3 in the East. I actually thought most prognosticators would have us picked lower than that.

Toledo jumps out to me as the team who has the fewest question marks after losing important guys. Akron loses Diggs, Buffalo lost McCrea, we lost Kellogg, WMU lost Whittington. Obviously these teams lost more than just those guys but those were important players that will be tough to replace. We have a lot of question marks. New staff, new players, Kellogg will be a huge role to fill in both play and leadership. I'm thinking the top 3 in the East are likely those three teams but it's anyone's guess in which order they will finish. Toledo is the clear #1 in the west for me. POY, Juice or Tree are obvious choices, but I think a healthy N'Dour has a great shot, too.

I expected us to be picked 2nd or 3rd in the East due to our lack of experience on the bench.

With our Senior trio of NDOUR, Bean and Stevie along with Campbell and Setty, I think it is easy to see how this team could challenge for a MAC championship if we can get some youngsters to step up.

I've seen crazier things happen.

100%Cat, I agree on N'Dour as a potential POY candidate. Keep him healthy and he could be a 18 & 8 kind of player this year.

If we get Kaminski we are MAC champs. A starting lineup of Bean, Stevie, Mo, Tony and Kaminski would easily beat Toledo's band of misfit toys. Toledo has most talent but are there enough shots to go around? If no Kaminski I feel like our team will need 2 or 3 from Khari, Thomas, Laster, Ryan Taylor or Wadley to step up. Probably 3 of them.

Akron could get off to a rough start; they lost big man Isaiah Johnson to a badly broken wrist. He is expected to be out 12-14 weeks.

I agree with you on both fronts.

I've been thinking (daydreaming) about how this squad would look if Kaminski can play. Offensively, I really think we would be an absolute nightmare. We know we have an absolute stud in Ndour. With a guy like that, along with another big we all think is poised to have a breakout year in Campbell... How could anyone guard us if we add a third big who is additionally a DEADLY 3-point shooter? I've read the MSU boards and they described Kaminski as "instant offense" capable of taking over with a barrage of 3's at any given time. That is exciting to consider...

On the flipside, defense could be a work in progress. If Kaminski is our 3, does he have the speed to guard opposing wings? If we go with Bean and Stevie (which I believe we should and will) that is two small guys out there.. Both with quick hands, but could have issues with bigger athletes.

Since I mentioned Bean on defense, imagine if he can continue shooting like he did last year...

Even with Kaminski, unless he's a better defender than I expect, I still maintain we'll need serious contributions from at least one of Taylor/Laster/Harley. From what some are saying, we'll get that if all are healthy. That said, with him OUr depth is very good in the post. Without him, I feel like Wadley is going to have to give quality minutes in some important games.

I completely agree with you.

Even if Setty can play on the wing (as opposed to just in the post) and Kaminski can play, I still think Taylor, Laster or Harley need to step up. We cannot just have 5 or 6 guys playing the entire game. We need quality minutes from one of our unproven wing players.

Also agree on Wadly... 10 good minutes from him would really help post depth on this team. I am worried about post depth if Ndour wears down like he did towards the end of last season...

98, KK on the court would make us better, but I'm not going as far as to say it would mean a MAC title. MAC champs usually have a nucleus of very good, proven, veteran players. Toledo and Akron have more of that than we do.

2 points:

First, I appreciate Blue Ribbon, as their yearbook is second to none. Only available on line about 2 weeks before start of season, but by far the most comprehensive and up to date.

Second, I read Arkley's piece in the Messenger after the first practice...injuries have me very concerned (Campbell, Harley). Very interesting quote from Saul, something to the effect of "I have a better idea of where this team will be in 3 years than I do for 3 months..."

According to Chris Dortch, they start shipping the printed books today (PDF's were available on Oct 1).

This poster is not expecting anything great this year, what with all the new players and new coaching staff. I am also concerned about next year as we have so many seniors on the team this year and we will probably be a very young team for 2015-6.
Overall this year could end up being a down year generally for Ohio sports.
And before all you posters get on my case as being negative it's called being realistic.

I'm not going to get on your case. I'll simply counter "realistic" by saying it's entirely possible that it's just as realistic to think that OUr three seniors in Taylor, N'Dour & Willis could have such fantastic senior years that it outweighs all of the changes. I think it's very possible that Mo could have a 18pt 8rb per game type of senior season. We'll see what happens starting Nov 15th!

I understand why you would be concerned considering the coaching change, but I find it hard to believe that the seniors Ohio has on the team would let this team not be good. Stevie has been a winner his whole life. Bean finally came around last year when Ohio needed him and I expect he'll carry that over. And the sky is the limit with Mo.

Add that to a mix of guys like Setty and Campbell, who should have good years based on good late season performances. So that's five guys who are experienced and know how to play and should know what it takes to get it done. Fill the other guys and maybe one or two exceed expectations.

I won't be surprised with a down year, but I'm not going to be surprised with a good one either. There are some pieces on this team. Really good pieces.

I think one reason for pessimism is probably this: more than half the roster we haven't really seen play. So, we think we know what we are getting, but honestly we have no clue.

I believe a realistic outlook is that "so many seniors on the team this year" will help stabilize "all the new players."

Our inexperienced roster IS scary. We are going to rely on minutes from a lot of guys we haven't seen much from...
The coaching change does not scare me as much. We may be on our 3rd coach in 4 years, but we did not miss a beat during the last change and I believe Saul is a high caliber coach who will be able to step in and keep this thing going.
Related: didn't Saul made the tournament in his first year at NDSU?

Personally, my opinion is exactly that of JSF.

Unless I disagree with him.

I looked at the Athlon preview at the grocery store tonight and they pick Buffalo to finish last in the East and BG to finish third. Go figure.

Are you nuts with this post? Fact: Mo had a very solid summer on a National Stage. Fact: Bean is a year into the MAC and I think we will see Big 12 Bean. Fact: Stevie is always energetic and is a fantastic leader. Fact: Setty and Tony were much improved at the end of last year and one can only expect it this year. Fact: Saul is good for at least 3 or 4 games that JC lost last year just on energy alone. Fact: Don't discount our newcomers. Thomas looks like someone who will not be afraid of Tree and Laster and Ryan Taylor will battle with the upperclassmen. This will be a 22 win season, mark it. And as for next year, Simmons and Kaminski along with Dartis and Doug Taylor joined with this year's youngsters and a solid leader in Treg will be a 25-win team. MARK IT!
