Until the scoreboards go on them, those walls at the top of the arena are awful dull.

The only reason not to put the names of POYs and All-American's for any sport calling the Convo home on those walls would be that it brings attention to the empty seats in front of them.

B-Hunt was every bit as good as Gates and Kaman, the reason he didn't get close in the POY voting was how awfully disappointing the Bobcats were that year.

Logical follow-up question...are you comfortable with having 2-3 volleyball players and 10+ wrestlers in the rafters? As soon as her banner is hung, you have to honor those sports too. Wrestling has something like 20 All-Americans. Suppose you could make a case for all of them?

Not really sure where I stand on the topic. It's nice to honor your history...but I think having too many players up there is cheesy. How many schools honor/retire jerseys for sports outside of men's basketball?

If you play in The Convo, you should be eligible to be honored in The Convo.

Nebraska Volley has their own house. Players are honored in the rafters per criteria.

I am sure If I perused iowa wrestiling or similar we would find other examples. have we had any National Champs, Gold Medal Winners, All Americans or equally accomplished athletes on those squads?

Per the 09-10 Wrestling Media Guide (the last I found on the ohiobobcats.com site) we have had 4 Individual NCAA Champs, 4 Individual Runner-Ups and 26 All-Americans.  Seems like a pretty good tradition to me.

Agree with JSF here, and I have no problem seeing VB players, wrestlers, or ladies basketball players in the rafters.  My only consideration would be to the sports that generally fill the most seats. Currently, I'd guess that to be men's hoops, followed by volleyball.

I ask the question of WHY is having the players that have had notable success in OUr basketball, volleyball, and wrestling programs having their names in the rafters "cheesy"?  If one of the best hoops programs in the country can use criteria to put a bunch of great players in their history, why can't Ohio University?

Using Borna's post re: Carolina's criteria for having a name/jersey hung from the rafters, what would be bad about defining our own crtieria -- such as MAC POY, NCAA All-Tournament Teams, All-MAC teams, etc. -- to recognize the historically best players in our programs' histories?

If you were referring to me the question was rhetorical. Since you and I have been in the Cat's Eye together I would think you would realize I have a pretty good relationship with historical figures in the wrestling program and listen assiduously to their stories. I do not think I asked if the " program was any good"as i was referring to Wrestling, volley and women's hoops in general.  Feel free to keep trying to put words in my mouth though....it is always great entertainment

You definately have the wrong person, as I can count on one hand in my entire life the times I've been in the Catseye, so no I do not know your depth of OHIO History.  All I know is you asked the question, someone gave you a quick run down, and now you claim to be an expert.  If so, why did you ask?  And in your question, you only speak of one sport.

Nope in the post I referred to volleyball at Nebraska and Wrestling at IOwa and generically referred to those as examples inferring that we could pick multiple sports at multiple universities to find examples of other sports than Men's basketball that honored their athletes. Sorry if that was not clear.

NOw again you changed the direction. It was a rhetorical question and general in nature. It was not about a PROGRAM and it was not sport specific and in no way, shape or form was there allusion to having any knowledge as
an expert anywhere. Does listening to Ellis and the various Wrestling alums that stop in tell stories of their matches and memories make one an expert? If so, I would be really smart as I have listened to hundreds of stories from Rhodes, Baron and many other hoops guys and plan to again on September 20th when they are all back in town for the football game.  Perhaps you believe this is the basis for your expertise on a wide variety of subjects? We can play this game and you can keep throwing stuff out there and twisting things around but it is digressing from the subject matter at hand and hardly worth the effort.  I was trying to show examples of what other U's do for their wrestling, volley, women's hoops and pose a question for purpose of discussion before you wanted to make it personal

So, back to the point,  now we have a great answer regarding Wrestling. DO we have any of those same accolades in the other 2 sports that call the Convo home? I believe Mast has a jersey from

I think this is an excellent point. And one that I had not really thought about. Why are only men's basketball players honored in the Convo? Are women's players honored? Volleyball? Wrestling?

I couldn't agree more with this line of thinking.

I lived in the Convo one year. By all accounts it was an Epic year in the Convo. A lot of Playing was involved. I feel Honored every time I walk into the Convo.

Hello pandora's box! Counterpoint...why limit it to those that played in the Convo?

Football, baseball, softball, swimming, track, field hockey, soccer - what about them? Certainly each sport has several worthy of honoring. There has to be a line somewhere. Or is there?

Honestly, I'm just confused now. Not even sure why my opinion is. But we could conceivably honor 100+ jerseys across sports, and I don't know if that's worth it.

The sports that play in other facilities can honor their best in those places. Football players should be honored in Peden, soccer players in Chessa, etc.

Good point.  Also, stopped by the Convo today to check on something and looked up and lo and behold there are banners up there for women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling - all sports played in the Convo.  All that is missing are jerseys with numbers starting with Carolyn Mast.

Here’s my update on players whose jerseys would be hanging in the Convo if we were using the UNC criteria used to honor their players with banners.

 1st Team All-American

Frankie Baumholtz

MAC POY

Ken Kowall

Walter Luckett

John Devereaux

Lewis Geter

Dave Jamerson

Gary Trent

D.J. Cooper

If I have it right, that would put 8 jerseys of players in the rafters. We now have 4. Brandon would not be included but 4 others would be. I’m not arguing for this, just stating that whatever criteria we use, it’s a tougher measure than what the Tar Heels use.

I would be greatly disappointed if we lose the degree requirement. I am proud that we didn't relax are standards for our greatest player nor we should relax then for anyone. I am looking at you DJ Cooper. I am sure UNC wished it had different requirements when it comes to former greats like Rashad McCants. When I take my children to the convo and they point to a jersey and ask who was this player. If I know nothing about the individual, I can at least say "Well honey, they are all college graduates."

I also believe if we have any academic all Americans they should be honored as well. We are an institute of higher learning.

I'm going to expand on this superb idea. There are many Bobcats who wins awards and competitions in academic and other fields (such as speech/debate). These awards should be featured in Baker Center or their appropriate building. Prospective students should be falling all over signs of excellence in everything we do.

Hawaii and JSF, both great points. I personally feel we do a very poor job as an institution in this regard.

Mentioning the debate team, JSF, reminds me that there's strong historic link between debate and football at Ohio.  Charles G. O'Bleness was on the debate team (captain, I believe) and then became the manager of the first Ohio football team on which his brother Ralph later stared (and died tragically of a practice-related injury).  Without the O'Bleness brothers Ohio football just might not have gotten off the ground when it did.  It's been a number of years since I read some of the old historical documents relating to the start of Ohio football, but I remember that I came away with the impression that Charles G. O'Bleness, the Athens banker whose bequest supplied the seed money for the hospital that bears his name, was more than just a manager of the football team and was instrumental in actually starting the team.

I agree both are brilliant ideas.  The bottom line is recognizing those who have taken the program to higher levels inside the building.

Maybe my detector is off, but I read JSF's post sarcastically (mostly due to the last line about falling all over excellence).
