I see twice here it lists TOS and his struggles in recruiting or building a team. B-Hunt had his career start under Larry Hunter, not TOS. His first two seasons were as a member of the Larry Hunter Bobcats, finished his career with O'Shea. I don't know that O'Shea had the time to build a strong team under Brandon in the short time he was here with him.

Yep, and I haven't done the research but I'd bet the list in football is significantly shorter than baseball or basketball.

A counter argument to the lack of team accomplishments and personal accolades for Hunter is that in spite of that he was seen favorably by NBA scouts. Hunter is 1 of only 4 Bobcats to be drafted in the first two rounds, and the other 3 are in the rafters.

One of the most important metrics is scoring. In career points Hunter does well, finishing 5th, and breaking the threshold of 2,000 pts. However, if you look at Average career points Trent, Luckett, and Jamerson all break the 20 pts/gm threshold but Hunter comes in at 16.9.

There's a good argument in my opinion.

Good point.  I misstated that.  The point I was trying to make that the ball handling guards that Ohio teams in those years had to work with remains the same.  Dustin Ford and Thomas Stephens were probably the best two PG's Brandon played with.  It's not fair to put the blame solely on TOS though.

Hunter's teams did make the semi finals 3 out of 4 years in the MAC tournament. Twice losing by 3 or less (Grunkenmeyer's 3). So if he had two finals appearances in his 4 years would we look at his career differently? I am on the fence with seeing a 34 in the rafters and I was a student during his time.

if you could only add one more to the rafters who would it be, Hunter or Cooper?

He played in the NBA and, I think, led all of D1 in rebounding his senior year. He's had a nice overseas career too.

No brainer in my book. Then again, this is the same place that took FOREVER to honor Trent.

Cooper no question. Raised the entire profile of Ohio University with the 3 NCAA Tournament wins. If he graduates, no reason he shouldn't be in the rafters.

That was on Trent though. He was honored pretty soon after he graduated.

Do you disagree with the premise that one must graduate prior to jersey honoring/retirement? I think it seems like a more than fair rule for an institution of higher learning.

Agree. To me, jersey retirement (or honoring) is for the ALL-TIME greats. The players that are once in a generation good. Luckett fits that. Trent does too. And certainly Cooper does and deserves to have his jersey honored (provided he can earn his degree).

Hunter was a very good player. So were Geno Ford, Leon Williams, Jerome Tillman and Nick Kellogg. But those guys are not on the level of someone whose jersey needs to be in the rafters.

And for the record, I do not think Dave Jamerson is worthy of jersey honoring. To me, he's just not quite on the level of Luckett, Trent, Cooper or Baumholtz (though I never saw Baumholtz play). Team accomplishments...and Billy Hahn...may have something to do with that gut feeling.

Jamerson is 1st in total points, 4th in avg points, 1st in single season avg points, was 1st in total 3pts for 20 years, MAC POY, Academic All American, and one of only two Bobcats to be a 1st round draft choice in the NBA. Hall of Fame no doubter but I'm comfortable with that resume getting a spot in the rafters too.

There's almost a pattern forming of best player for each decade getting in the rafters-

Anyone else turned off a bit that Hunter would turn to Social Media to voice his displeasure over this?
Once he gets his degree, Cooper is next in line.

Also not helping Brandon's case is the he wasn't even the most popular player during his time here. That distinction belonged to Patrick Flomo. He was a better player than Flomo, but the fans came out for Patrick. I know he was my favorite during those years and can say the same for many of my fellow classmates at the time. I remember watching the Flomometer (rhymes with thermometer) tick up with each blocked shot. He could protect that rim.

I disagree, Flomo got me excited in the moment but when I took a step back it was no comparison. B-Hunt was the clear piece that kept us competitive and many games was an absolute beast.  And he had his fair share of thunderous dunks and jaw-dropping rebounds.  Plus he was a model citizen at least as far as I know, always friendly and respectful, graduated in 4 years, and proud to be a Bobcat.

I guess I look up there and think there are more than the current folks up in the rafters that have been VERY significant in Ohio Basketball history.  What about guys that have been multiple times All-MAC players?  If I were a deciding person, I'd be allowing in Hunter, Geno Ford, as well as Leon Williams. Of course there could be more, and you'd have to have a way to draw the line somewhere.  I'm only think back into the mid to late 90's when I was a student who became a big fan.  I know there are more guys further back than those I listed.

I feel like having more names up there, and embracing that history & creating a culture of tradition also creates EXCITEMENT for the fans and students.  Excitement translates into tickets sold, bigger home court advantages, higher profile games, and so on.

I was fortunate enough to make a college decision on a crazy Mac tournament. I visited ohio for my fourth official recruiting visit for football. At the time I took it because of a girl and had no intention of committing to a Mac school. That visit during the Mac tourney and being in Athens while ou was on tv and featuring brandon hunter made me realize not only was athens awesome.... But no matter where you go you will have pride and scouts will come. B hunt got drafted that year and made my decision clear... I loved seeing him in North Carolina with flomo killing it in unc but I committed knowing Brandon hunter made history and a lot of people turn heads to see ohio on the big stage. He deserves his number up in thhe rafters for all he did during his time here. Before our sweet 16 run.... We beat unc in chapel hill....

There is a distinction between having your jersey honored in the rafters and having your jersey number retired. Some people aren't aware of the difference,(I'm looking at you DJ Cooper), but its worth noting. Frank Baumholtz is the only player to have his number retired. I think we can all agree that it should be nearly impossible to have your number retired.

I also think there's some truth to the statement that our history is under-represented in the rafters and its worth a look at reexamining our criteria. It would be interesting to hear what Luckett, Jamerson and Trent think about it. What do they think about the process in general, and how would they feel if Hunter and Cooper were added to their fraternity.

Interesting way of looking at it.

I agree that not every decade necessarily needs/deserves representation, but I do think it is very clear that Hunter is the best from the 00's.

Additionally, combining the 90's, 00's and 10s, the ONLY 2 players I have in front of Hunter is Cooper and Trent.

If it were up to me, I would put Hunter's number up.

I've seen crazier things happen.
