Is there a reason this man is not in the rafters at the convo? I dont know the politics behind all that but I just saw a post on Ohio BobcatNation facebook fan page that he commented " I sure wish they would hang another banner up there..SMH".
Seems like it's really important to him and man he sure did a lot at Ohio.

Could he have been referring to a MAC Championship banner?

It's hard to look past the relative mediocrity of the teams he played on. That's the reason why you won't see him up there. Even if he just went to one NCAA Tournament it would be a different story. Perhaps he has TOS to thank for that...

The next banner to hang from the Convo rafters should have the name Caroline Mast on it.

Indeed!!!  Flimsy excuses, at best, for her name/jersey not up in the rafters.  1223 career rebounds, freshman All-American, and leading Bobcat scorer with 2449 points......plus, she coached a state championship team.

A few years ago a women's NCAA basketball site (apparently no longer available) listed Caroline Mast 25th all-time in total career points (2449) plus rebounds (1223) > 3672.

She is the first MAC player, man or woman,  to score 2000 points and have 1000 rebounds.

This achievement deserves recognition of the highest level, and hanging her jersey only adds to the richness of Ohio University athletics. It's long overdue.

The record book is here; she's still listed as #25 (page12 of the pdf).  No other MAC player is in the top 50.

I wholeheartedly agree with Caroline Mast Daugherty being honored with a jersey or banner in the Convo. Unfortunately, the AD doesn't think she did enough to belong there.

If she didn't do enough, then two of those other banners should come down.  I have the funniest feeling this may be the year that enough "pressure" is exerted that her banner will go up.  It's a shame that it will have to come to that.

Who decides which athletes get their jerseys in the rafters? I don't think it's just Jim Schaus saying "hey, let's do this". Believe the hall of fame committee (composed mainly of former athletes and a few long-time community types) that votes on new Hall of Fame members is the decision maker here.

Are there provisions to even honor a women's basketball player? Guess that opens up the conversation to volleyball and wrestling. Why isn't Kermit Blosser or Harry Houska in the rafters from wrestling? Should Ellen Herman's number be retired? Seems to open up a lot of questions that I don't know the answer to. But I'd argue Ellen Herman was just as much (or more) of a figure in Ohio Athletics history than Caroline Mast.

On that topic...what about football? We've never honored a jersey there but there's certainly some worthy candidates.

Now that Pandora's box is open...curious to other thoughts out there...

Maybe I focus too much on team accomplishments, but I have a hard time putting a guy up there who didn't win a MAC Championship. For as good as he was, we were 14-16 his senior season. When you look at what Trent and Cooper accomplished team-wise...you've got a tough argument for Hunter.

the areas that separate Hunter from those in the rafters include-
- no regular season titles
- no conference tournament championships
- no post season appearances
- no MAC POY award
- no All American status

the level of importance of these is debatable.

I agree that Ellen Herman is deserving of a banner as well as Caroline Mast. Many of Caroline's accomplishments have gradually faded from the spotlight:
  • Caroline led the Bobcats in scoring all four years of her career
  • was a freshman All American
  • the first Bobcat to be named MAC Player of the Year
  • her team won a MAC Championship
  •  all time scoring and rebounding leader for Ohio Women's basketball
  • held the record for most rebounds in a game (23)
  • is a member of the Ohio University Kermit Blosser Athletic Hall of Fame
  • was named to the Mid American Conference Hall of Fame (at the time of her induction she was the ONLY Ohio University athlete ever included-they have recently inducted Gary Trent)
  •  was named the "player of the decade" for the Mid American Conference
  •  and many other athletic and academic accolades.
The thing that really sets her apart is the fact that she was an outstanding student and citizen on and off the court, a great example of how to conduct yourself and represent your school.

This is something that has always bothered me a bit too. Not just with Hunter, but with any great player at Ohio. The athletics department and school need to be honoring these guys/gals for their accomplishments here. I don't care if Hunter never won a MAC title or made an NCAA Tournament berth. So you're telling me Ivo Baltic belongs up there? C'mon, Hunter was one of the greatest players in the program's history. Put his jersey up there.

Also, don't discriminate. Mast needs a banner up there. So does any great volleyball player from the past decade. If there are already banners for the teams, then why not the players?

As for football, I fear Peden Stadium may be too small to fit a "ring of honor" type deal.

How many excuses can the department come up with to say why not to do these things? I guess you could say there is the Hall of Fame and then the extra special players get their numbered honored in the rafters. But what's the cut-off if that is the case?

From my memory, most of the time Brandon was in Athens, he was not playing with a decent point guard, which I think we'd all agree was TOS's fatal flaw recruiting-wise with Fears as the exception.  They were loaded with wings and 4's but not many good ball handlers.

As for the side thought in this thread, I'd agree that any ladies who achieved enormous success should have their names up there.  I believe there was a time when Borna noted how impressive it is to have a lot of banners up high noting success of the programs.  To me, that creates a culture of success and tradition that we've been building more and more.

One last note about Brandon:  Bring him in as a "coach" of sorts during the summer and teach a few of these bigs on how he was supremely successful at getting to the free throw line.  Almost no one did that better at Ohio.

This is not an argument as to whether Brandon should be ‘jerseyed’ by OHIO. My argument is that the teams success should not be a determining factor. A team's success is more than the talent and performance of one player.

No major sport uses team success as a determining requirement for entry into their Hall of Fame or into an individual team’s retirement criterion. If they did, then the following players who never won a World  Series or NBA championship would not be Hall of Famers or recognized by their team.

Just a small listing:

 Baseball

Harmon Killebrew

Ernie Banks

Juan Marichal

Ted Williams

Yaz

RobinYount

The Big Hurt

Tony Gwynn

Basketball

Elgin Baylor

Karl Malone

George Gervin

Pistol Pete

Reggie Miller

Dominique Wilkins

Pat Ewing

Tim Hardaway

Dan Issel

Bob Lanier

Nate Thurmond

Charles Barkley

Connie Hawkins

While your statement is true, team success plays a big part in some sports particularly in football.  The more individual stats available the easier it is to receive accolades on losing teams.

But college basketball is a tougher situation because careers are so short.  But there are plenty of HOFers whose numbers aren't typically HOF-worthy but they won a mess of championships. The guys on your list all had great numbers.

Unless you're an exception to the rule like Dan Marino, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas or Eric Dickerson.

A counter argument to the lack of team accomplishments and personal accolades for Hunter is that in spite of that he was seen favorably by NBA scouts. Hunter is 1 of only 4 Bobcats to be drafted in the first two rounds, and the other 3 are in the rafters.

One of the most important metrics is scoring. In career points Hunter does well, finishing 5th, and breaking the threshold of 2,000 pts. However, if you look at Average career points Trent, Luckett, and Jamerson all break the 20 pts/gm threshold but Hunter comes in at 16.9.
