I looked through the threads and didn't notice any discussion on the Arkley article from June 7th about current work being done, and other renovations that are just around the corner.  I know we talk sometimes about pie in the sky ideas for renovations, or just simply things like paint.  I noted something that came to mind about seating when Schaus is referring to plastic seating.  My question is, what are the thoughts on having the arched "Ohio" or "OU" spelled out in white seats with the rest being green seats?  I think it would be a good look.

Also, in terms of simple renovations - for those in the know on such things- what would it cost to install wifi for the fans inside?

I love the white arched Ohio idea, but you would have to incorporate green and white offsetting t-shirts for whomever is sitting in that particular area for it to make sense when the game is being played.

We sure have been spoiled with padded cloth seats in the Convo.

I would think the wifi could just be a (massive) upgrade versus a new install. There is a wifi network across all the dorms and campus buildings for students and faculty to use.
With that said, the network isn't really any good and it can't even handle the student dorm population's data needs let alone a big convo crowd's data needs.
"Guests" on campus can register to use that network but again it is pretty slow even with Ohio pumping money into upgrading it. Kids these days with their iphones and youtubes. SMH

p.s. Last I checked, my oakid (or whatever they call it now/before) still worked even after having graduated allowing me to avoid registering as a guest to access the network. so if you know that number, i would imagine that could still work for anyone?

Typing 8 numbers, then oak.cats.ohiou.bobcats.athens.notOSU.edu was a stroke of genius.

I hope those new lights will be a little easier on my aged eyes, too.  The current color temperature in that place makes want to wear my shades.

Someone recently told me very emphatically and convincingly that a "source" told him the engineering for a suspended display/scoreboard was being done.  Not a person connected to the the university or the AD, mind you,  but he sure seemed convinced himself.   Upon questioning the viability of this, the logic went something like "digital displays don't weigh anything anymore so all those fears of pulling the roof down have gone away".    Makes sense, doesn't it?

When they replace all this fabric with hard plastic, I wonder what that will do for building acoustics.

Good point.

I make a motion that all BA posters switch to a plastic blend of clothing to improve Convo acoustics.

Lead by example.

On a serious note, I saw that Arkley's article mentioned the banner/flag situation... The way Schaus talked about it, it got me excited. Seems they want to do something very noticable. I like that.

Holding out hope they dim the lights on the upper seats now.

With all the suggested renovations to the Convo, just remember, it could always be worse:

http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/29/ucl.../

That is a look inside UCLA's Pauley Pavillion after a 30" water main broke near campus.  Now THAT looks like a renovation nightmare.

I wonder if the floor will end up looking like Grover Center's after the flood back in my day, the 60s?  Anybody remember how warped and crazy looking that floor was?

They always used to do this in the early days of the Convo just before the start of the game.  Then they would turn the upper seat light back on at halftime and then at the end of the game.  I've never been sure why they stopped doing it.  The court always seemed to be well lit back then during the game and it gave a more dramatic effect with the court being the clear focus of everything.

I saw Pauley Pavilion underwater this morning also. Tough nut for Coach Alford. Wonder how fast they can get it back together....probably have some mold remediation once it is done....cali folks will be doing lawsuits forever if they do not get it right the first time.

Yes, Casper, I do remember the warped floor.  I was very surprised how quickly it warped as the water went down and the floor began to dry.  That wood certainly soaked up the water like a sponge.  Not sure what kind of wood is usually used in basketball floors, but I would think that real hardwood would withstand a few days of water better than that floor did, but I really not a wood expert, so I suspect, in retrospect, that would probably have happened to any similar floor.  At the time, though, I was surprised, but I was just a young whippersnapper then.

I was wondering about that myself. Me thinks it should raise the volume a tad.

I liked the effect of dimming the upper lights too, but I don't think the convo has ever been a well-lit arena. It's not Millett dark, but it always seemed too dim in there.

It will probably be a very "tinty" sound - kind of like Broney's when it first opened and before they put in whatever they did to take the treble out of the place.  The Overhang has that problem now.  Anyway, I'm hoping for a better sound system and a new DJ who plays better tunes in the Convo.

Sadly, it's not the 70's anymore. I doubt the music many of us want to hear is making a comeback!

You are so '70s!  My children used to use that as the biggest slam they could think of.  Saying something was 70s was like saying it was "plastic" in the '60s.  Personally, I'd like to see them pipe in music from the SiriusXM 50s channel. After all, if it's good enough for Purple Chopsticks it should be good enough for the Convo!
