Played one year for Née, after playing a year or two under Bandy, before leaving Athens. Was a talented, 6 - 4 scorer.

I believe Tim Woodson transferred in the early '80s for similar reasons/endeavors (as Crute) - at least that was the rumor on campus. It was as Nee was coming in.

I could be wrong but I thought Woodson played one year under Nee and then transferred.

Tim Woodson played one year for Danny Nee and didn't like him. He was a religious and spiritual man, but didn't leave Athens to take on that vocation. We had a many a conversation.

Regarding the recent player defection, let's be serious. You mean to tell me a kid will give up his scholarship because "Athens in the summer is tough"? What is so tough about it? You are there to get an education and play basketball. Doesn't it register that the campus might be a little different when all the kids come back to school? I don't think that's the reason he left.

Wow, what a total bummer.  Dude just ditched us.  And did so way late.  Argh!

Hoops coaches sure get paid a lot.  But, it does have to be tough to have much of your job contingent on the whims of a bakers dozen of 18-22 year olds.  Brutal.

Did I miss someone wishing him the best in his future endeavors?  Or am I first?

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....

Thanks for the clarity (Glacomo and others) - I knew it was around the time of Nee's arrival, but not sure how much overlap there was.  Goes to show that players leave for personal reasons - always have.

No, Crute is not leaving because of "Athens in the summer" - based on his communications, it is 100% to pursue becoming a youth minister.  Whether he can appropriately pursue that vocation at Ohio and/or within the Athens community is for others (and most of all he) to weigh.

Would be interesting to see if Jamerson can reach out and discuss with him how basketball could help his pursuit.

Mike Harris. Allen Hester.

Leaving Ohio aside, I hope this kid is getting some serious advice from those close to him.

To me, and granted I could be wrong, this seems all about the girl (whom it seems he has been with about 9 months). Six months down the road when the girl is gone, again I could be wrong, is he going to be happy if he makes this decision....

I can't speak to the Crute situation as all I know are the assumptions on this board and nothing more.

What I can say, is that many are providing logical reasoning in regards to how to deal with life decisions of 18-22 year olds.  I reflect back to my mentor when I first got into coaching, who gave me a great peice of advice I remember 20 years later, "Don't try to talk logic to someone who isn't necessarily operating on logic."   Some people make decisions on black & white concrete reasoning, while others simply do what they want to do or what feels right at any moment.  I would probably put homesickness and lovesickness in the category of a non-objective/non-black & white decision.

A few are talking as though his departure from the team is final and official. I haven't seen anything indicating that is true.

On an ask.fm thing, someone asked if he had given up his scholarship and his reply indicated he had.

"Bro, please continue playing ball, think about how much more u could relate to the youth while ministering them if u had the chance to do what they dream of! Don't throw away scholarship money over a girl..they come and go..u can minister while playing ball ! God blessed u with all of this. Fr bro

I'm going to play just not at Ohio... I wasn't gonna just stop playing ball "

This is always a risk under perfect conditions.  Could be he's homesick. Could be a girl.  Could be that he wasn't a good fit for the new system.  Could be he didn't feel as attached to the coaching staff that didn't recruit him like the previous staff did. Better to find out now.  I'm not going to slam a kid without knowing a thing about his decision.  I just hope for his sake it's a good one and that a year from now he's not regretting it.  But for all we know it might the best decision he'll ever make.  Knowing what I know now it would have been one of my worst decisions if I had done the same thing though.

I don't know him but it sounds like homesickness had a lot to do with it.  But also Ohio's well-deserved rep as a party school can weigh on the heavily religious.  Could be he was just uncomfortable.

On the other hand, it can go the other way, too.  I knew someone who was a raucous member of the 110 (yes, that's a redundancy), a two-fisted drinker and part-owner of one of the downtown bars.  Last I heard he was a minister.  Go figure.

Spot on. An intellectually challenging church that doesn't ask you to merely take upon the closest available serpent, but to think deeply about your choice of snake.

A Diamondback can be a play off the word "diamond." The hardest substance, yet it allows the Light to pass through, much like the Spirit passes through to a hardened heart.

Or does one choose the copperhead and use it as a parable about standing up to the evils of money?

But when you really think about it, do we choose the snake or does the snake choose us? Wrestle with that one day whilst sitting under a tree in a forest.

Do we speaketh in tongues because the serpent sticks his out? Or do we all speak the same language - love? That is the question plaguing our existence since the time of apples and ribs.

The mysteries of the heavens astounds...

My first month or so in Athens (fall of 1979) I wanted out in the worst way. Way too small towny for my taste...and freakin' everyone on my floor section was from someplace called Piqua.  Turning point, as I can recall, had something to do with copious amounts of beer and pizza one evening. Or was it that first hairy buffalo party?

I was ready to leave my freshman year (1981) and then my Read Hall RA turned me onto Super Beef Hoagie's and I stayed.

Are you sure it had nothing to do with Todd Yoho's future bride sun bathing outside your Read Hall dorm room?

I really am confused by the conception of alcohol = sinning and that religion should be against alcohol. The first recorded miracle was changing water into wine.

I hope Mr. Crute takes time to reflect before ultimately making this decision. There is plenty of scripture that could sway him either way. I hope Mr. Crute does what is best for Mr. Crute.

As the world turns. I surprised that it doesn't happen more often. There is little sense of obligation or loyalty anymore. It's all about what's in it for me.
Not saying that's Crutes problem, but it is for many

Well, my first full week away from home on my own, when I was 16, was at a summer music camp at Fiami. The saving grace - was a girl - from Piqua..........my only "good" memories of Fiami
