Andrew hit it right. The problem I have with baseball is that they're not requiring teams to spend a minimum amount. In 2006 and 2007, the then Florida Marlins received $60 million in revenue sharing, work they did nothing for other than be in the big leagues. Their payroll for those two seasons amounted to about $45.5 million, meaning that they were paid about $14.5 million to suck as poorly as they wanted to thanks to the teams willing to give their fans a worthwhile product on the field. The problem is less with the teams overspending as it is with the teams unwilling to spend despite the money they're receiving from other teams.

Who can argue with the Marlins approach? They have two titles in their short existence, when many established and much wealthier franchises haven't had a sniff in the same time period. They've shown they're willing to build with young (and thus cheaper talent), then will spend just as that talent emerges.  If you want to blame the Pirates for working the system for a while, I could go along with that.

Finn is correct that there are several teams who get more revenue sharing (plus the MLB general fund) than they spend on payroll.  The marlins are a fascinating case of building young and selling off before they age.  They're in the midst of doing it yet again.  But their fan support is atrocious.

They key is recognizing when the window of opportunity is and spending appropriately at that moment.  If I am a Pirates fan, I am pissed off at the off-season they had.  They rebuilt well and grew some great young talent, made the playoffs, and came back and did nothing to address glaring holes in an otherwise solid team.

I suspect that baseball team owners (and other sports team owners) are more interested in making the dollars than winning, for the most part.

A second report has him returning to Chicago to tend to an urgent family issue.

I can't conceive how conflicting accounts could emerge from this particular region of our Earth. It's simply unprecedented.

That kind of thing happens when everyone thinks they're a journalist.
