Personally, I don't care what Saul had to discuss with Tim O'Shea.

Or, perhaps, you meant that Saul had a talk with Tom Osborne. In which case, I would most certainly be interested in their topics of conversation.

I was expecting this when I clicked on the thread.  Highly disappointed.

In his presser, Saul talked about cutting down on TO's, trying for fewer TO's every year, so I'm afraid it might not have went well.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I talked with "Saul" yesterday.

I can confirm that sources have informed me that "Saul" has similar beliefs to my own on this program's potential.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I can't believe how much I've learned reading the responses to my original post.  I'm really so glad I started this thread.

Found this Baltimore Sun article from last year.  The task seems to be to get him past his "strong relationship" with Anthony Stewart and convince him that he'll like his role with Saul at the helm.

and verifies for those who keep asking what role OUr prez takes in recruiting. Obviously Tariq had the same experience many do when they come over the hill and see campus for the first time.

Seriously.  Time to move on.  Tariq's coach left and a big time Ohio fan attacked Tariq and his Dad on their twitter account.  This just ain't happening.

As much as I'd love to have a young, talented guy come in, if he is as flaky and "flighty" as all this makes him sound, I'm not so sure it's a bad thing he won't come here.  Commit to a program and a school, the coach moves on and before even meeting with the new staff he's wanting out.  Heck, I don't even think JC had signed the new contract before he wanted out of his LOI.  He was Bobcat through-and-through until JC bolts and then he didn't want to give the new regime a chance?  At this point I say let him go, stop wasting our time on him if he doesn't want to be here.  Let's find someone who does.

Come on. That's not fair to Tariq. There are a lot of relationships that are built during the recruiting process. Not only relationships that are built with the program you commit to, but with other programs and coaches as well. Things changed instantly at Ohio. It's not fair to call him flaky for wanting to re-explore his options.

If he is meant to come to Ohio, it will be because this program is right for him, and that includes starting a good relationship with Coach Phillips. If that happens, it will be meant to be. If not, it will be in both the best interest of Tariq and Ohio.

I don't think he's flaky or flighty for wanting to explore his options post-JC.  I think he's flaky and flighty for wanting to bolt before the Christian deal was seemingly even done.  If the relationship was really that fragile, then it was never as solid as we were lead to believe.  His "knee jerk reaction" was to want out.

Free Tariq? He intentionally signed the letter in the first place. He's not a prisoner being held inside the Convo. It would be totally different if he had already played a year and then wanted to transfer after Christian left. That, I would understand.

Why are so many people ready to just move on from this? What is the absolute worst that can happen here? He holds out and can't make a decision, and we miss out on another recruit who could potentially be better or as good as Tariq, which in today's standards of recruiting is next to impossible this late in the game.

Thanks, but not thanks, I'll take my chances on Saul making an impression and he keeps his word.

Huh?  Tariq isn't holding out. He's already informed us of his decision. Personally I understand both sides.  He bought a bill of goods that was switched upon delivery.  We tend to look at these situations from a very selfish perspective.  But this is this young man's life we are talking about.  I also see Ohio's position.  We just want him to make an informed decision before we release him.  Let Saul try to resell him on Ohio before we grant him the release which I have no doubt we will eventually do.

As for Dwayne Wise, does anybody here know him?  Do they know what advice he's giving Tariq?   Don't just assume this guy is a bad guy because frankly we just don't know.  This guy could be giving him absolutely spot on advice for all we know but we don't like him because his advice isn't "Stay at Ohio under any circumstances. It doesn't matter that the new system may or may not fit your style and you have never even talked to anyone involved with the new coaching staff."    The only person I see involved in this whole process who is definitely in the wrong is Bobcat Love.

As far as I can tell the process is playing out as it should.  Tariq wants to reconsider his options and we want the new coaching staff to have a chance to resell him on Ohio before he is free to go.   Seems to be a bummer for us but we also threw a big curve to the kid.

My "holding out" statement was more or less him weighing his options. Wasn't trying to make it sound like he's a free agent in the NFL or something. I'm in complete agreement with you. I don't think Ohio should release him until both parties have made an informed decision. Some others are saying to just dump him right now. Why? The possibility of losing him is still highly likely, so why not take a shot at re-selling him on the idea of Ohio?

I find it odd that the language being used with Tariq's handler, and other players' handlers, is that their expectation is if there's a coaching change then an LOI release should be automatic and the new coach is expected to go to the back of the line and enter the recruiting process just like everybody else. It completely cuts off the idea that the person who signed the LOI should FIRST give the new coach a listen, and then if things don't click an immediate release should be granted.

In sales we talk about not selling on the cancellation. In other words, don't get the customer to buy your product today by selling them on their ability to return it for a refund if they change their mind. Too often, they change their mind. Its better to make a sale that will stick by selling it as a completed transaction.

So my question is, how are these LOIs sold? Are they sold as a commitment to the coach or to the school? Does the coach reassure them by saying "look, I'm not going anywhere, but if I do, you can back out, no problem, the school will understand."? Or is it not mentioned at all, and if not should it be? I ask because this won't be the last time we see a recruit want to transfer during a coaching change, but am curious to know if there's any way to try to avoid it from happening like this.

Posted this in the recruiting thread as well.

Matt Barnes from NBC4 in Columbus here.

Just got done talking with Tariq's dad back and forth on Twitter. He said that Ohio is still in the running and that they are still making a decision. The biggest worry right now is simply they have no relationship with the current staff. He mentioned 30 days ago, they were "all in" to packing up for Ohio but this changed everything. They are still talking to members of the staff, team and even fellow commits gathering information they need before they decide. He said he'd let me know when they make a decision but gave no timetable or whether they are leaning any direction.

MY OPINION: The fact that after meeting with Saul on Sunday, he is still torn tells me he is seriously thinking about coming to Ohio still. He may genuinely like Athens but you can't blame a kid for wanting to be comfortable with the coaches that he'll be spending the next 4 years with. You can't just do that with one meeting. So it behooves (love that word) him to weigh all options before making a decision.

If I hear anything else, I'll update you all on this thread.
