I'm all in with Saul Phillips. Seems like a very likable guy and has had success coaching thus far. I think he is a good fit and I love that Schaus loves him. I trust his ability to pick hoops coaches. Period.

I am interested to hear what the basketball junkies think of his playing/coaching style. Honestly, I don't care what style we play as long as we can win doing it. From what I understand, Saul Phillips is from the Bo Ryan tree and plays a similar style. I just watched Wisconsin in the Final Four... No doubt that style can win us games if executed correctly.

I like seeing that NDSU shot the highest % from the field of anyone in the NATION. Defensively, can we expect primarily man d? What else?

I've seen crazier things happen.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl

The Swing Offense! A form of Princeton Offense. It's what Wisconsin primarily runs. 

It usually starts with one post player and four guys around the perimeter. Expect to see a lot of back screens, flex cuts, and interchangeable parts. You need all five players to have good ball skills and be good passers. It is truly a team offense and features a lot of screening and waiting for mismatches.

Just curious, early on do we have the players to play a 4-1 perimeter oriented offense?

I'm sure it will take a bit of time to get the guys that fit his style.

Just hope the interim works out...

Saul uses purely man defense, it is a pack line defense kind of like what Tony Bennett at UVA runs.  

Offensively he is a combination of Bo Ryan and Tim Miles. I think Tim made him a bit less rigid in his offensive philosophy, especially in regards to tempo. In 2009 when we went to the NCAA tournament we ran a lot of pick and rolls, we had a tremendous scoring point guard in Ben Woodside and Saul pretty much centered the offense around him.  

Saul took two completely different teams to the NCAA tournament in regards to style which is rather unique since he did it the same school. Like I said the 2009 team was guard oriented, with no real dominate post player. Our most recent group we ran our offense heavily through the low post and it was more athletic and defensive minded. 

The best quality about Saul is that his teams always play hard and he has a knack of getting the most out of guys with a chip on their shoulder. He is a great motivator and will work tirelessly to sell your program to anyone that will listen to him.

FWIW, I think you'll see some of this offense at the lower division high school levels. I know for a fact that Berlin Hiland, a D4 powerhouse in Ohio, runs this offense to perfection. All five guys can pass, shoot, dribble, and rebound on the offensive and defensive glass. It's all about maximizing the strengths of your team and getting the other team out of position. I can't wait to see it in Athens.

Welcome to the board, great info. Come early and often.

The Pack Line is what propelled this program when it was implemented in 08. I am not sure what JC did with it ....perhaps a conversation with a recent hoops alum would be in order. Bout time for David McKinley to follow pops steps into BA territory for some expert info.
