Just listened to a live interview with coach Phillips with a station out of Minneapolis. I think I have a man crush. Some things he said:

"With my buyout clause I ain't leaving Athens for a long time". This says more about where Jim Schaus is taking this program more so than he will be here for 5 years. He did follow that up by saying he expects to see his daugher graduate from high school in Athens.

He also confirmed Will Ryan will follow him to Athens.

Said after 10 min talking to Jim S he was completely sold on the job.

Apparently his friends will like visiting him in Athens. He compared his hotel room condition to a frat party.

I think overall, his laid back, outgoing personality sold me on him. Probably more engaging and fun than Groce.

And everything you just described..is the opposite of Christian.
Could not be more pleased to have this coach take OHIO to the next level.

Gotta consider this a big hire for not only Ohio, but the MAC. Anyone know what his buyout clause is like?

Can we assume it's well upwards of $500k?

Okay right, worrying about whether the coach has his twitter account setup is so much more important than considering future scheduling possibilities.  Maybe I should go like him on facebook or something since some on this board are so infatuated with social media instead of what really counts.

Their non-conference strength of schedule was 41st toughest in the COUNTRY this last season. How do you think they managed to get a 12 seed? That's border line at-large status.

I swear some people just make up things to be outraged about.

While we are no where near the level of those programs, I would think a good place to "start" would be the ability to hire someone who already had a head coaching gig and an NCAA tournament win.

At large is a non Sequiter if you are gonna keep dominating the conference every year.  I'm not much interested in being competitive.  I don't even want to have to look in the rear view we are moving forward and distancing ourselves from the pack.  I  Am  Thrilled

For the first time since st Louis I am absolutely thrilled

With that bypass Athens isn't very far at all now from Columbus. The MAC finished ranked 5th in the RPI out of 26 mid major basketball conferences last season. Conference tournament is #2 for the mid majors behind Arch Madness and Ohio has a strong alumni presence for it in Cleveland. Its pretty close to a perfect situation for a non-power conference school.

We are paying our coach 550k a year. If the next level wasn't in sight, we would have hired some assistant for 200k.

Within the last 10 years on BA:
"The Nelsonville Bypass will never happen"
"Ohio will never have an IPF"

Now:
The bypass is done. Our largest metro alum base is 1.5 hours away. We have an IPF. We have upgraded our coaching salaries in the two largest revenue sports to respectable levels. We have been to the NCAA tournament twice in the last 5 years and won games both times. We have more bowl games in the last 5 years than our entire previous history COMBINED.

We are on the verge of a multimillion dollar corporate sponsorship for both our basketball arena and football field.

Wake up and drink the green kool-aid people, this is already next level. We are now talking about advancement to the next, next level.

I'm not sure what it'll take for some to be appreciative of the success we have had recently. Rod McDavis, Jim Schaus and all of bobcatnation (players, fans, teachers, students, alums, local supporters etc) ALL deserve a lot of credit for what has happened so far.
That said, we've got more room for progress. No stopping now.

I've seen crazier things happen.

Agreed except you left off the basketball practice facility to be built soon and the academic performance center:)

I'm not saying 175000 a year isn't good money, but 550000 is different level like, he could save up enough to not have to work again if needed. He might turn down more money in the future like Dambrot.

Or unlike JC he will earn a 1 million dollar salary with a few runs in the tourney.

Let's just enjoy this hire and not get caught  up in this. It will only set us up for disappointment later. If he wins here and wins big, he can move on for his big payday. Good for him. Hope he stays, but we all know the beast, and we know his nature.

Great find, thanks. I really enjoyed listening to the coach speak. Sounded very genuine and is definitely entertaining.  Couple highlights - believes it's the best job in the MAC.  Said it took about 10 minutes of talking to Schaus to decide he wanted the job.  Said he's got a new group who just lost their coach at Ohio and he has to move his focus to them now and get their lives back in order.  Said it doesn't mean he will get everyone to stay, but he wants to give them an accurate picture of what to expect from him and that he's fun to play for.

Good stuff, now if he can keep coaching on the court here like he has at ND St. then we're set.

Someone thinks a lot of their kid.

I grew up about 40 minutes from athens in a town where you had to drive at least 30 minutes to get to anything unrelated to outdoor things more exciting than a grocery store and always wished I went to Athens high school. My mom went to Ohio as a non-traditional student in her late 20's-early thirties and got a bachelors and masters degree so I ended up in Athens a lot as a child, and now that I'm a student and have friends here who went to athens high school, they've told me it was pretty sweet. Athens doesn't seem like a bad place to grow up

I got to Athens and it was about six times bigger than the place I grew up. My freshman dormmates thought I was from the moon (they weren't too far off) because I said I'd never lived in a place where you could buy gas or get something to eat after 10 p.m. Athens seemed like such a big place to me. Sometimes it still does.

It's weird for me. My hometown was 4700, and the entire county had less people than OU has students. I think deer out manned us.
