Schaus at his best!  Terrific hire wrapped up less than 72 hours after job opened up.  I was concerned that we might have to settle for whomever was left after Tulsa got their guy, but obviously, it'll be the other way around.

My only concern is how long can we hold on to this guy?  But it should be a fun ride while he's ours....

Given where the program was at less than two weeks ago (promising post season run) followed by the untimely news (JC leaving and possible loss of Owens), I am not sure we could have come out any better than this hire right now.  I look forward to meeting Coach Phillips and hope he can build a winner for as long as he is in Athens.  Good job, Jim Schauss!

Hope you all are right. I really know nothing about him other than that his quote posted upthread sounds almost exactly like Christian two years ago. Hopefully, he'll amount to something and stick around for a while because I don't want to go thru this again in another couple of years.

1st  Question..Is Saul making more than Solich?
2nd  Question..Why pay him $550 when he was only making $175. Could we have saved some of JC's penalty and paid this guy say $350 which would be double where he was?
3rd  Question...This guy appears to be an up and comer...so if he has instant success here he will probably leave for the next big deal.
4th Question...Can he keep all the player on the current roster as well as all the recruits for next year? If he succeeds with this tall task than he will have passed his initial test. TO sounds like the real deal and would be a critical part of next years team as a freshman.

Thoughts:
The only thing I know about this guy is that his game plan is a slow down style, not my personal favorite.
I was never in favor of the JC hire, although his team this year won more games than I expected. So I guess I was beginning to get more comfortable.

+1. I feel the same way, Athena.  I'm a little more reserved.  I will say this-SP already has more NCAA Tourney wins than JC and every other coach in the MAC.  Schaus hired this guy in only 3 days and I trust Schaus.  SP will love Athens and the Ozone, that's for sure!

#1 How can he leave NDSU in the lerch like this?
#2 How can he look his recruits in the face after this?
#3 Does he have an Ohio twitter account yet since we all know that the true measure of a coach's commitment to a program?
#4 Why is it a good thing when we "Christian" another program and unpardonable sin when it's done to us?

That being said it looks like a great hire.

Not a question, but here is one:

would you you rather he have no success and stay for the life of the contract?

not sure why you consider his style more of a "slow-it-down" approach. His team scored over 80 points 14 times this year, we only did that 7 times. His team averaged five points more per game than we did. Then, on the flip side, they allowed fewer points than we did. I'm pretty pumped about the hire.

Wow, I didn't really think we'd be able to sign a guy with a recent NCAA Tournament win under his belt from a conference roughly on par with the MAC. Considering the other jobs Phillips was linked to this off-season, this is an impressive hire.

My only question is his style. Although we never played quite as quick under Groce as he talked about, we still tried to speed up the pace. While Christian slowed us down a little, Phillips' style is a polar opposite of Groce. Slow and methodical. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, I do wonder whether our current roster is an ideal fit for Phillips' style, and if not then will we be spending another couple years in transition after just experiencing the same with Christian?

Again, Phillips is a great get, but part of me wonders if Pat Kelsey would have given us a smoother transition given his basketball roots. And I do kind of wish we'd stick to a single style of play, instead of bouncing from one extreme to the other with every new hire.

But overall, an amazing hire for Schaus, especially on such a quick timeframe. Let's hope Phillips can hit the ground running and prevent any significant departures from the program.

For what it's worth, my wife likes him.  "He smiles" was her quote.  The only thing that is a bit odd is taking a job and not even coming to town.  Easy hire though considering every applicant for the job was already in town.  The vacancy couldn't  have happened at a better time.  If jc had quit one week later we wouldn't have had a new coach this quickly.

NDSU was extremely efficient on offense, but played a very slow pace (302nd in tempo). Admittedly, we were only around the top 200 this year, but under Groce played quite a bit faster. NDSU played at a pace more like EMU, as a point of comparison.

He's the hottest coaching name from the tourney (Archie Miller excepted). Someone would have paid him $550. I'm happy it's us. So let's pay the man what he's worth and throw in a healthy buy-out in the event we're dancing again next year, and we'll roll that money over into our next coach as we drink champagne out of a glass slipper.

They averaged 65.2 possessions per game, ranked #318. We averaged 69 per game (#158). ND State averaged 1.133 points per possession, good for #8 in the country. We were down at #151 with 1.032.

So yes, his teams do play at a slower pace than we are used to, but they are very efficient with their possessions.

I'm beyond excited about this hire.

Quick?  Perhaps JS, like the US Military plays war games! As in  EVERY year towards the end of the football/basketball season the athletic department holds a pow-wow and determines a short list of candidates based on a set of criteria, regardless of whether the think they may actually lose a coach.  JS got two hires very quickly, the man must be locked and loaded at all times!

Congrats on getting OUr man!

When you look around the county at the "Mid Major" schools that are launching pads to the next level Ohio University is right at the top. I hate being a launching pad on one hand but the fact that we are means the Bobcats are winning games and hanging banners. I just hope he supplies the energy and excitement of John Groce and it would be nice if he sticks around 4-6 years.

Welcome to Ohio!!!!!!

I agree and others have made this point as well.  Better in my opinion to have wildly successful coaches for a couple years than mildly successful ones for 6.

While I was ok with the JC hire when it happened, I didn't feel any excitement about it and that seemed to be the general reaction on BA.  A magnetic personality doesn't guarantee success, but I for one am excited to see some life injected back into the Convo.  Goodbye Coach Christian....hello Coach Phillips!

NDSU besides beating WMU in Kalamazoo also knocked off Notre Dame, Oklahoma and that powerhouse team Bryant this year. The Summit is basically a basketball conference that play more bigs/inside game then small point guards.

As I said earlier in this thread, when things were just in the speculative stage, I think this is a very solid hire.  The reaction on the BC board that someone else quoted is really telling.  While he may not have an Ohio Twitter account yet, I do note that his wikipedia page has already been changed to reflect his status as OHIO head coach, perhaps done by one of our BA brethren.

This guy has actually won an NCAA Tournament game.
This guy has energy.
This guy seems to have a very good connection with his players.
If he can change the mind of at least half of the 6 players considering leaving, I'll be even more impressed.
Given the circumstances, OHIO couldn't have done much better.
I'm on board with Saul. It's a statement I couldn't make about Christian 2 years ago.
Nice work Jim Schaus. He got the best candidate available.

Woah! Is this for real?

I hope there aren't 6 guys considering leaving. Are you talking about all of this year's recruits plus Mo and Campbell?

I think Saul can keep our guys here and bring in solid recruits. His star player this year, Taylor Braun, signed with NDSU very late in his recruiting period so hopefully he can repeat that here!

Yes....in-coming recruits and a couple currently on roster.

4 incoming recruits are no longer solid. Tariq is gone...no guarantees with other 3 signed players.
No guarantees with at least 2 other players on current roster.
I don't make stuff up.
Love the hire.

I will echo everyone else; what a great hire. It seems Coach Phillips, who is a Wisconsin native, has a young family (which I hope means he's not going anywhere for awhile) and is very well connected to Coach Bo Ryan.

I hope Coach Ryan stays at Madison (even though he is 66) for a few more years, because if Coach Phillips is as successful as we think he will be, it certainly seems like a return to Madison is inevitable. Let's enjoy him while we can.

^I am by no means an expert basketball tactician, but isn't this a great point?  Slowing the pace with the intent to reduce possessions versus valuing possessions to work for the best shot possible and increasing efficiency are two entirely different things...no?

If we are going to be playing a more fundamentally sound, lower turnover type of game on the offensive side and a more attacking, man defense on the defensive end then sign me up!

And regarding possible player/recruit turnover, I have a hard time seeing many/any turnover in the program with this hire.  I know jack about the coaching pool in the NCAA, but I know this guy has HUGE buzz, and I have a hard time believing the recruits will not see this as a positive. (with no disrespect intended to JC)  I never met JC, but his body language as opposed to JG or Saul are yin/yang, and I can't imaging today's players not seeing Saul's persona as being more magnetic/desirable/player's coach-ish.

All hail Jim Schaus on this hire.
