Josh Cribs was busted with way more than this, and got pled to a misdemeanor by convincing a judge it was for personal consumption.

I would bet that's what's going to happen in this case but Abreu's season is over. It will take months to hash this out.

$5,000 is nothing - sounds like all they have on him is signing for a package. What will be Akron's road? I say he sits tonight and then is back next weekend for the tournament.

Next court date March 22... that's kinda going to interfere with his plans for the NCAA tourney.

Guys who receive 5 lbs. in the mail receive it from guys with 500 lbs. to mail. I think there is a reasonable chance he can plead both down to misdemeanors if he gives up the source, but he's probably still looking at SOME jail time and will be out of the tournament. You could get that down to a misdemeanor, but not a minor misdemeanor (unless the prosecutor is a major 'kron fan with some serious job security....). This case is too high profile to let it slide that far.

He won't get jail time. Ohio doesn't like to clog up the system with first time, low level marijuana dealers. He will get 2 years probation, max.

I wonder who the package was addressed to.

I also wonder why he couldn't keep playing. He's innocent until proven guilty after all.

5lb of weed is not exactly what people purchase for personal consumption.
The amount is the real issue here.
I believe he is done for this season. As to what his punishment from the court system will be no one really knows. The school will rule on his basketball carreer after the courts verdict and rulling.
How interesting is it that his next court date just happens to coincide with Akron's MAC Tournament semi-finals game.

Isn't it far more likely that his roomate was dealing pot and Abreu knew and just didn't care?

I don't disagree with this statement, but I think a lot of it is going to depend on how much the prosecutor likes to see his or her name in the newspaper. Prosecutors don't make the front page by prosecuting ordinary first-time, low-level marijuana dealers. But when those first-time, low-level marijuana dealers have some other affiliation that makes them newsworthy--like being the starting point guard of the local university's successful basketball team--you do make the front page.

And the door swings both ways on that too. You get (presumably positive) attention for a successful prosecution, but also criticism if you appear to give special treatment to notable athletes by pleading a 3rd degree felony charge down to a minor misdemeanor.
