Since most of us have come to know the 110 through football related events, I thought this would be the place to post this  Sure would be nice if we could throw this kind of money at the 110.

Well - just "throwing money" at them won't solve the "problem" that they are not the "Most Exciting Band In The Land"

A lot of people don't realize it, but there is a pretty significant financial investment that all members of the 110 have to make in order to be apart of it.  They have to buy their gloves, shoes, spats (the white bits on top of their shoes), t-shirt, shorts, dry cleaning for their uniforms, and recently their own meals for their training week before the first performance.  For first year members it can easily cost close to $100.

Ohio State acts like going to Cal is a big deal when they play a total of 1 OOC road game every two years.

It's about a 99% certainty that they will be at the game. Last I heard they were still working out the details with Louisville.

NICKLE AND DIMING THE 110 at Ohio University

Say it ain't so athletic department.

Rumor on the street has it that the 2 tickets per game that 110 members in years past have been able to provide to their parents are now history. Do players or coaches get tickets for their family or friends?

Also, a new member has to cough up about $550 this year to participate.  Really?  A good chunck of it is for band week when the underclassman are most likely to stay in the dorm.  Really?  Why isn't it free?  The dorm is empty and it costs almost NOTHING to house someone for a few days other than hot water and toilet paper.  The RA's are all getting trained so it doesn't cost extra for them.  I can understand the food bill but cannot understand the dorm cost or are the dorms being operated by a non-university for profit entity?  If this is some NCAA rule than move the band to one of the colleges and fund it differently.

what was the cost in years prior? you say "a good chunk of it" is for band camp, how much exactly is "a good chunk"? Did they stay for free before? Do other student groups stay for free or have in the past? Are there other costs unique to this year such as replacement of instruments or uniforms? something about for-profit, 3rd parties running the dorms in the summer as mandated by the NCAA? Did someone tell you that or are you making wild guesses? It sounds like you have zero specifics about the situation but are dead set on complaining about it regardless.

Band kids have always had to pay for their dorm rooms so that does not change--however, I railed about that in years past--the question is why do they have to pay?

My comments are in a thread of how in Buckeyeland the university has found ways to direct more money to the band.  Ohio should do everything it can to ease the burden for the 110.  If giving a comp dorm for a week of band camp can save a kid some $$, then why not do it?

Permimeter, Your question of do other student groups stay for free? If the cheerleaders and dance teams are not staying for free than they should as well.  As for other groups, what do they do for the athletic program or university publicity?

The 110 has been one of the most consistently positive ambassadors and sources of pride for our university over the years.  In good years and in lean years for our athletic department the 110 is always at the same high level of excellence.   There are few, if any, other student organizations that combine academia and extracurricular participation the way they do.

So many of my friends who went to other schools can't understand why I talk about our band so much, especially considering that I was not a member while a student.  I have their Exposure CD on my iPod.  They are the primary source of one of my favorite songs of all time, Stand Up and Cheer.

Never been a fan of preferential treatment of any kind but if there is a group in Athens who should be on the fringes of that it should be the 110.  I know Cutler Hall has no reservations from riding their coattails when they generate positive pub and exposure for OU-maybe they should return the favor some?

RE- Charging the 110 to stay in empty dorms.

The University also charges the football team to stay in dorms over winter break if they are practicing for a bowl, right?

I find both of those a bit ridiculous. Too many departments are fighting for a dollar against each other. You don't just see it here, its really a university wide issue. Silliness.

I've seen crazier things happen.

This could all be solved quite easily if more money from student fees was allocated to the band.  To do that, another group or several groups that receive funding would get less money.

As for the ticket issue, if that is indeed true then that is a very lame move by the ad.  Lame.

Football also pays for two a days and summer camp. This is one Agra that Semesters save money for athletics.

with the sell out crowds last year they may want to make money on more of the seats when they could. Cutting back on the free tickets is the best way to do so. At least students still get in free

110 X 2 parents = 220 seats = less than 1% of Peden capacity. And how many cheapo deal seats do we essentially "give-away"? Kitty poo.............

you don't really think there are only 110 members in the 110 do you? Last year there were 240.

It's not that I don't agree that it would be nice if student groups like the marching band and cheerleaders, etc. could get free room and board during camp but nothing is truly "free", the money has to come from somewhere.  Every dept has a tight budget and I'm guessing the Housing Dept is no different. As much as I'm sure they'd like to, they can't just simply give away free room and board during the summer. OSU has greater access to revenue then we do to address these types of costs, sometimes the money just isn't there.

To put it into perspective- there were 293 students who attended band camp for the 110 last year and there will likely be even more this year. By comparison, Shively Hall has 241 beds. There are real costs associated with running a residence hall to full capacity for a week or more.

IF it's true that band parents/family members now have to pay...that is an absolutely indefensible move. The band does more than any other group on campus to support athletics. To "nickle and dime" them in the name of a couple extra bucks is just awful.

Only way you can justify it is to get rid of all the free tickets: football team, coach families, cheerleaders, dance team, etc. I can't imagine that's happened.

In a year after the athletic department set tons of revenue records, I can't believe that they're resorting to charging the band in order to scrape a few more $$$ together.

Don't know if this is true, but will have to ask around and see. It's certainly rather upsetting, IMO.

oops. 240 X 2 = 480 seats = less than 2% peden capacity. 480 from the bunch of couple dollar tics they sell - still Kitty poo............

I do not know how many seats it totals but a chunk of the "free" 110 parents tickets are the  rows behind the standing sousaphones.  So they are not really seats but standing room areas if the person wants to see any action.

The rumor is that parents will have to pay $60 per season ticket.  The AD is making a gamble that the parents pay up and will likely stick them in the rows mentioned above.  If these tickets go to the public, it will be intersting to see the yellow jacketed ushers getting an earful from an unsuspecting ticket holder complaining about the wonderful view of the back of a shinning tuba!  "76 trombones block my field view; and the 110 stands up all the time.  They are followed  by row after row of..." Sing it!
