Ohio returns middle linebacker Keith Moore, who started all season long last year. Both OLBs graduated as did the whole defensive line, although a couple other guys started multiple games, including one about half the games, because of injuries. The secondary is where Ohio has the most returning. Only the starting strong safety graduated. Both players who started at cornerback last year are back, and both started last year because of injuries to the starters the year before, who also are back this year. So Ohio has four guys who have started entire seasons at CB. Basically the same thing at strong safety. There's talk of one of these very experienced guys moving to the FS spot. How are you going to count Carrie, Hughes, Shaw, and Carpenter? 1. Travis Carrie was a starter for years, but did not play in 2011 at all. Is he a returning starter?  2. Xavier Hughes was the starter in 2011 and started the first 6 games before he was hurt, and was the projected starter in 2012, but after being suspended the first couple games ended up hurt, and didn't start any games in 2012. Is he a "returning starter"? 3. Jamil Shaw started a couple games in 2011, and was the projected starter for 2012, and started the first game, before he was hurt.  Is he a "returning starter"? 4. Nathan Carpenter is a sometime starter, depending on what formation they open in. He started 6 games in 2011, and 4 in 2012. Is he a "returning starter"? Then there are the players who filled in as starters at times: 1. Lorenzo Fisher - with Shaw and Carrie out, Fisher started 12 games 2. Ian Wells - with Shaw and Carrie out, Wells started 11 games 3. Devn Bass - with Shaw and Carrie out, Bass started 1 game 4. Crutcher - with other linemen out, Crutcher started 3 games 5. Barber - with Scott out, Barber started 6 games 6. Thad Ingol - With Moore out, Ingol started 3 games 7. Josh Kristoff - With Hughes out, Kristoff started 7 games in 2011 and 12 games in 2012. The only projected starter for 2012 who played the entire season, and returns is Keith Moore, so he's the only person you can count for sure.  The way I'd count it would be to look at it on a position basis, rather than a person basis. There have to be at least 4 returning starters, Moore at LB, two corners, and strong safety, because everyone at those positions returns. Edit - haha - you beat me. That's my point.  Some of those draft picks for Rutgers weren't all defense or even starters.  One publication listed one returning starter on the DL, but it's really 3 returning starters.  Yes Rutgers lost 2 starters among the LB, but one of the new starters has 12 starts over the last 2 years filling in at all 3 LB spots.  So Rutgers really have 2 experience LB this year in the starting line up a combine 35 starts.  Transfer Toler of Western Michigan isn't mentioned in publications, but year he being interview about adjusting to Rutgers and team.  The offense has similar stories too.   One publication was giving Louisville credit for guys who underperformed in the past as impact players this year.  Prime example is the secondary which for the last 2 years has been given a ton of credit, but has not lived up to the hype.  As good as Louisville is they have at least 2 "WTF" games within league play. And that MLB may move to OLB opening up the middle for a sophomore who has played in 11 games the past 2 years. The defense is actually loaded with experience when you consider guys like Brantz and Crutcher  on the DL who played a bunch last  year. Experience however means squat if the injury bugs bite.....thank goodness we have depth to protect us from that......somewhat. The #1 back from the 2011 season (Dom Brown) redshirted last year with a knee injury. The leading back from last year (Senoris Perry) went out with another ACL toward the end of the year. They are currently listed 1 and 2 on the depth chart.
