I've seen crazier things happen.

I'm guessing not. I think we will be lucky to get to 5 wins unless the offense is better than indicated. With all the new bowls, 6 wins should be a lock for a bowl, but I don't know where the wins are coming from. Being realistic, Marshall, BG and Kentucky appear to be almost for sure losses, we don't play UMass, and Miami and Akron are going to be better.

I thimk and hope that what dogged us the last year or so is gone.  If not, few wins.  If so, certainly 6-7 wins and probably more.

I don't get why anyone is under the impression that Kentucky is any good. They're terrible. Our team this year is pretty unproven on offense, but I don't think they'll be terrible.

+1 I'm not saying a win over KY is a lock, but they are definitely terrible. Even UK fans here acknowledge that fact, and a few have told me they believe we will win.

Agreed I think we'll go 7-5 hopefully higher. Kentucky lost to Western Kentucky last year. Who is a small school similar to us so I see no reason why we can't win

How about 14 4 star guys showing up and contributing? I'm not real big on freshmen doing much, but I wish I had these guys here.

I'll chalk this up to the growing list of things that would never had been said on this board in 2005

That is becoming more true every year. In the days when there was only 12 bowl games it was a big accomplishment and only the MAC Champion earned a bowl. You needed a winning record to land in a bowl and it was all about how many tickets you could sell, not the conference arrangement. Making 5 straight bowls out of the MAC does say something because only 4-5 schools are bowling most years. In the Big Ten with 10 bowl games it doesn't say anything if you're making a bowl every year with so many of them. Its the same way in basketball. For a MAC school to be in the NIT, CIT, CBI or whatever its significant because you need 20+ wins out of the MAC to do that. 20 basketball wins in the Big Ten will land you a spot in the NCAAs. A 10-2 season in MAC football makes you a favorite in a lower tier bowl game. Go 10-2 in the Big Ten and it lands you a BCS bowl.

One thing that hurts schools like Kentucky in a game against a school like Ohio is when you're a losing program you don't have confidence. I would put this game in the toss up category along with Marshall (we have their number), BG (looks like the class of the league but we have them at home), NIU (have them at home). Getting that win to start the season against Kent State is going to be a big factor in whether we end up 5-7 or 7-5 or better. For the first time in about a decade with BG there is a dominant team besides us. Temple had a nice run for a few years there but was never true MAC championship caliber. BG at homecoming is going to be a monster game.

Umm, because it's the SEC and it's a different class of football. UK has one of their best recruiting classes ever coming in and Stoops is coaching the older guys up. Kent State thought the same thing back in 2012 and got throttled 47-14 by a team that finished 2-10 that year. BTW, that was the same Kent team that went to the MAC title game.

That first game against Kent is going to be big for us IMHO.  They have had our number for the past several years (have eaten our lunch frankly) and I think that a win over them will go a long way for our team psyche. While I am not a big fan of opening a season against a conference foe it's probably best to play them to start before our annual rash of injuries.

I'm not claiming a win, but being in the SEC means nothing. It is the best conference in football, but nobody pays attention to the fact that half the teams are still average at best most years (Vandy,, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas in recent years, Mississippi State, etc.) it's not like they're a top 25 team or even close. A bunch of Freshman don't mean much and Mark Stoops is a first time head coach with an all time record of 2-10 with an overrated last name.

Why are they any scarier than NIU, BGSU, or Marshall?

I wouldn't say that being in the SEC means nothing. It means they have pretty good facilities, a good fan base and an attractive place for recruits to be drawn to. Ok, Kentucky is a basketball school and has to overcome that with their fan base. Arkansas and Tennessee have seen the top 25 in their pasts and are undergoing new coach pains. As mentioned above, Kentucky had a great recruiting class last year and will be more competitive as those players mature.
While I don't think that they are any "scarier" than the teams named, I wouldn't be surprised to see similar scores versus them as well.
