MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Ohio ran the ball 62 times for 309 yards and finished with more than 500 offensive yards for the third game in a row while ending a four-game losing streak to Central Michigan with a 43-28 victory at Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Wednesday night.
Beau Blankenship, filling in for an ill Donte Harden, had 129 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, and Tyler Tettleton threw for two touchdowns and adding another one on the ground. Ryan Boykin added 16 carries for 91 yards.
“Boykin and Beau, they got the job done filling in for Donte,” Tettleton said.
Wide receiver Donte Foster also did not make the trip after suffering a concussion during the week.
“That’s two pretty good players that we’re missing right there,” Ohio coach Frank Solich said. “… We did miss those guys, ut I thought the guys that filled in for them did a good job.”
Ryan Radcliff completed 26 of 52 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns with one interception for Central Michigan (3-8, 2-5 Mid-American Conference).
Freshman receivers Courtney Williams (six catches for 133 yards, 1 TD) and Titus Davis (6 catches for 110 yards, 2 TDs) made plays for Chippewas, but their defense could not stop the Bobcats.
Ohio (7-3, 4-2 MAC) scored the first 14 points of the game, but held only a 17-14 advantage at halftime. However, the Bobcats got a safety, a touchdown and a field goal to begin the second half to gain control.
Twice Central Michigan cut the deficit to eight points with fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Blankenship broke loose while Ohio was trying to run out the clock for a clinching 48-yard touchdown with 2:03 remaining.
After the Chippewas took some momentum into the locker room at halftime, the Bobcats turned things in their favor early in the third quarter.
Paul Hershey’s 51-yard punt rolled out-of-bounds at the 1-yard line, and on second down, Alphonso Lewis read a swing pass to running back Zurlon Tipton and brought him down in the end zone for two points and a 19-14 advantage.
Although the Bobcats did not did not initially take advantage of good field position on the ensuing free kick, they got the ball back in good field position after a punt and scored on third-and-3 with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tettleton to Jerry Gross.
The Chippewas went three and out two more times in a row and a short punt gave the Bobcats possession at their opponents’ 36-yard line. Matt Weller kicked a 32-yard field goal for a 29-14 advantage late in third quarter.
A Travis Carrie interception on Central Michigan’s first play from scrimmage after the kickoff gave the Bobcats a chance to blow open the game, but the Chippawas managed a stop and cut the deficit to 29-21 on a 1-yard Tipton run with 10:55 remaining.
Ohio’s rushing attack could not be stopped, though, and after an 18-yard pass to LaVon Brazill on first down, Blankenship ran the ball eight straight times to the end zone on a 2-yard run.
Radcliff hit Titus Davis for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:38 to go, but again, Ohio was not stopped. On the fifth play of the drive and the 13th straight rushing play by the Bobcats, Blankenship iced the game with a score on an option-play to the left.
Tettleton scored on a 14-yard run on Ohio’s first possession and he connected with Brazill for a 63-yard score with 7:08 to go in the first for a 14-0 advantage.
Radcliff completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Davis later in the first quarter, and early in the second quarter, Weller booted a 48-yard field goal. Williams scored on a 14-yard pass from Radcliff to make it 17-14.
Two replay reviews involving turnovers went against the Bobcats in the first half with both calls on the field being upheld. In the first, a Central Michigan receiver was ruled down before fumbling, and in the second, it was ruled that a Tettleton pass intended for Brazill did not hit the ground before bouncing up into Leron Eaddy’s hands for an interception.
The game also was plagued by penalties, particularly on returns against the Bobcats. In total, Ohio was flagged nine times for 86 yards, while Central Michigan was called for 10 penalties for 89 yards.
Tettleton smashed the Ohio record for single-season passing yards and touchdowns. He was 12 of 22 for 218 yards and added 50 yards rushing on 14 carries.
“I think that’s great,” Solich said. “They’re both deserving. They’re both excellent athletes and tremendous competitors who have done an awful lot for Ohio, LaVon through his career and Tyler still with a share of his career to go. It’s good to see both of those guys have the kind of year that they’re having.”
Brazill had three catches for 89 yards and tied the school record for touchdown receptions in a season. He added a run of 12 yards.
Central Michigan ran the ball just 18 times for 65 yards.
Safety Gerald Moore keyed Ohio’s defense with 10 tackles. Jahleel Addae had 12 tackles for Central Michigan.
“We’ve lost a lot of football games over the course of the years, so obviously it was good to get a win against them,” Solich said.
With the victory, the Bobcats maintain their lead in the MAC East. They can clinch a spot in the MAC Championship Game with a victory at Bowling Green and a Miami loss against Western Michigan. Both games are set for 8 p.m. Wednesday.
