Ohio signing class filled with offensive lineman, defensive players

Bobcats pick up 23 committments

ATHENS – Ohio’s 2016 football signing class is heavy on offensive lineman and defense.

The Bobcats had signed six offensive line and picked up 12 defensive players but only four offensive skill players – three wide receivers and a tight end - on Wednesday.

Among the 23 players signed (plus two transfers announced) is one junior college and three high school players who already have enrolled and who will participate in spring practice. Four preferred walk-ons are included in the count.

Offensive lineman Felipe Fernandez, of Tampa, Florida, is one of the highest rated players as one of four Bobcats to have a composite 247Sports rating of three stars. He committed to the Bobcats the night prior to signing day, passing on at least seven other offers that included UCF and Buffalo.

Two of the composite three-star rated players are wide receivers Cameron Odom, of Bedford, and Keevon Harris, of Warren. Odom, one of the early enrollees, had offers from Indiana and Ball State, and Harris, a late pickup in the class, reportedly had offers from Iowa, Kent State and Toledo.

The other wide receiver is Bryan "Bingo" Long Jr., of Marietta, Georgia, one of the preferred walk-ons.

Tyler Typa, of Broadview Heights, played wide receiver in high school but was listed as a safety signee and is the final composite three-star player. The son of former NFL punter Tom Tupa picked the Bobcats over Bowling Green and Kent State.

Junior college player London Miller, of Menifee, California, should help the Bobcats immediately at cornerback, a position where the top three players on the depth chart graduated. He has two years of eligibility for Ohio.

Also enrolled early are freshman offensive linemen Sean Beadle, of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, and Adam Notestine, of Pickerington.

The other offensive linemen are the class are Desmond Noel, of Cincinnati, and Taeshon Trotter, of Detroit, and Nick Sink, of Fishers, Indiana, the latter two who recently committed to Ohio. Trotter’s commitment came just the night before signing day, and Sink is a preferred walk-on.

Trotter and Fernandez perhaps filled the spots of offensive linemen Hadyn Lewis and Nathan Murray, who de-committed from Ohio late in the recruiting process.

The Bobcats also loaded up on linebackers, signing Eric Popp, of Loveland, Jared Dorsa, of Kings Mill, Dylan Conner, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Robbie Fusner, of Grove City, a preferred walk-on. In addition, Andrew Cree II, of Warren, was listed by most recruiting services as a linebacker at 6-2, 209 pounds, but is listed by Ohio as a defensive lineman.

Other defensive linemen signed by the Bobcats are Will Evans, of Augusta, Georgia, Amir Miller, of Cleveland, and Scean Mustin-Sherman, who was another player who previously had not announced a committed to Ohio.

In addition to Tupa and Miller, defensive backs signed were Centerville cornerbacks Xavior and Ilyaas Motley.

The team also got letters of intent from Grafton tight end Austin Conrad and New Paltz, New York, kicker/punter Aidan O’Neill, who will challenge current team members for a scholarship.

The Bobcats’ 2016 signing class included no quarterbacks or running backs. Running back Dontez Rash de-committed several months ago and opted for Division II Slippery Rock.

Ohio also has several other new players in the program, including two graduate transfers with one year of eligibility: defensive lineman Tom Strobel from Michigan and cornerback Kevin Houchins Jr. from Louisville. The others are grayshirt freshman tight ends Ryan and Adam Luehrman, of Athens, and Canadian wide receiver Matt Seymour.

A signing day press conference was held at 5 p.m. and is available online.
