Campbell, Dartis lead Bobcats past Vikings

Ohio takes over after Cleveland State starts hot

CLEVELAND – Antonio Campbell scored 23 points and added 10 rebounds as Ohio defeated Cleveland State, 76-67, on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena.

After missing Ohio’s loss to St. Bonaventure last weekend, Jordan Dartis returned to the court and scored 15 points, making 5 of 9 3-pointers, and Jaaron Simmons had 13 points and seven assists.

Rob Edwards led the Vikings (2-7) with 17 points and six rebounds, and Andre Yates had 17 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Cleveland State got off to a quick start, going up 18-9 at the 10:42 mark in the first half, but Ohio (5-3) got it turned around, taking the lead for good, 34-32, on a Dartis 3-pointer with 1:42 left before the break. The Bobcats held a 36-34 lead at halftime.

"We started taking care of the ball more and started going inside to Tony and he started doing his thing down there,” Dartis said. “After he started doing his thing, we started knocking down threes, getting to the line, and, most importantly, taking care of the ball."

Up 43-38, Ohio scored eight straight points – capped by two Dartis 3-pointers - to begin to pull away. Later, the Bobcats had a 7-0 run to turn a 60-50 lead into its biggest advantage, 67-50, with 4:53 remaining.

"I thought we did a good job surviving a team that came out and shot the ball, really, pretty well,” Ohio coach Saul Phillips said. “I thought we did a decent job of handling their pressure, and I thought we did a good job figuring out different ways to score. For a while, you had screen-and-roll going pretty well. Jordan Dartis kind of put on a little shooting clinic for a little while, but then we settled into Tony. Tony inside was really good for us. Good win for us. It’s a good game for us to play, and we’re grateful we got a chance to play here in 'The Q.'”

The Bobcats shot 51.7 percent from the floor, but without Dartis, they were just 2 of 13 from long range. The Vikings, led by Edwards’ 4-of-7 effort, actually shot better from deep, going 10 of 21, but they finished at just 44.1 percent overall.

Cleveland State had more turnovers, 15-12, and fewer rebounds, 37-32.

Treg Setty and Gavin Block both had eight points for the Bobcats. Kenny Kaminski was just 1 of 6 for two points.

Ohio hosts Ohio Dominican at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
