Block, Setty help Bobcats bounce back in Virgin Islands

Campbell, Simmons post double-doubles in win over Norfolk State

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Once again, Ohio built a big halftime lead, and this time, the Bobcats had no problem holding it. Ohio went on a late first-half run and coasted to a 93-71 victory against Norfolk State in the second game of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Saturday.

A day after giving up a 19-point second-half lead in a 90-88 loss to Tulsa, Ohio (3-1) took a 20-point lead at the break, and although the Spartans made a run early in the second half, the Bobcats finished strong and ran away with the win.

While the Bobcats relied heavily on Jaaron Simmons and his 30 points against the Golden Hurricane, this time they got a balanced scoring attack that included six players tallying eight or more points. They were led Saturday by freshman Gavin Block, who had 19 points, and senior Treg Setty, who finished with 16.

After trailing 47-27 at halftime, Norfolk State (1-3) got as close as 57-52 with 11 minutes remaining. This time, though, the Bobcats had an answer for their opponents’ push. They scored seven in a row – with five of those by Block – to go back up by 12.

Then after a Spartans free throws, Antonio Campbell hit a free throw and Block drained a 3-pointer to make it a 15-point game with 7:45 remaining. Norfolk State got only as close as 12 the rest of the way, and the Bobcats led by as much as 24 in the final minute.

It was a 25-6 run over the final eight minutes of the first half that put the Bobcats in command. They led by just one before a Campbell dunk began a 9-0 run. Setty hit a 3-pointer, Campbell scored a layup and a Setty bucket made it 31-20 in favor of Ohio at the 5:40 mark.

Ohio’s lead was 37-25 with less than two minutes remaining, but it scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half. Simmons hit two free throws, Black had a layup and a 3-pointer, and James Gollon drained a long ball before the break to make it 47-27.

Campbell and Kenny Kaminski each had 13 points, and Simmons finished with 11 points. Both Campbell (10 rebounds) and Simmons (13 assists) had double-doubles. Wadly Mompremier added eight points and five rebounds, and Block had a round game, contributing six rebounds and six assists in addition to his scoring.

The Bobcats shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field and went 23 of 29 (79.3 percent) at the foul line. They were strong from beyond the arc for the second straight game, finishing 14 of 26. Setty was 4 of 7, Block went 3 of 5, Kaminski was 3 of 7, and Campbell was 2 of 2.

Norfolk State’s D’Shon Taylor led all players with 24 points, and Jeff Short had 19 points, but they were the only two in double-figures for their team.

The Spartans shot 42.1 percent in the game after shooting only 34.6 percent in the first half. They also were good from deep, making 8 of 16 3-pointers.

Ohio had more turnovers, 13-11, and also more rebounds, 37-24.

The Bobcats will face Florida State, which was a winner against DePaul on Saturday, in their final game of the tournament at 4 p.m. Monday.
