Kent State's 2 big runs allow it to pull away from Ohio

Campbell posts double-double, but Bobcats lose 4th straight

ATHENS - Ohio erased all but two points of an 11-point halftime deficit only to have Kent State go on another run that allowed it to pull away for a 64-51 victory Saturday at The Convo.

An 11-2 run at the end of the first half pushed Kent State out to a 36-25 advantage, and after Ohio came back with a 9-0 run early in the second half to get within two, the Golden Flashes scored eight straight as part of a 12-2 run capped by a Devareaux Manley four-point play.

Manley led Kent State (19-8, 10-4 Mid-American Conference) with 16 points, while Kris Brewer scored 11 points.

Despite playing sick, Antonio Campbell had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Ohio (9-16, 4-10 MAC). Stevie Taylor scored 13 points, and Maurice Ndour finished with 12 points and seven boards.

Prior to the three big runs - two by Kent State and one by Ohio - neither team got more than six points of separation. That biggest margin came with the Golden Flashes scoring the game's first six points. Ohio came back to take the lead, 9-8, and held its biggest advantage at 19-15 with 8:36 left in the half.

With the game knotted at 23 in the final four minutes before halftime, the Golden Flashes finally took control with six straight points. After an Ndour basket, they closed the half with seven straight, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Manley and Derek Jackson to make it 36-25.

Down 41-30 two and a half minutes into the second half, Ohio got a layup from Ndour, a three-point play by Khari Harley, a Taylor layup and two Campbell free throws to get within two with 14:39 remaining.

Khaliq Spicer ended the run with a layup and then blocked a Taylor jumper, with Kent State eventually getting two foul shots from Brewer. Spicer scored again before two Chris Ortiz free throws made it a double-digit advantage again.

Campbell ended the run with a layup only to have Manley bury a 3-pointer while being fouled by Treg Setty. The free throw made it 53-41 with 9:17 to play, and Ohio never cut the deficit to single-digits after that.

Ohio shot just 35.3 percent for the game, including just 2-of-12 from 3-point range. It was only good on 27.6 percent of its attempts from the field in the first half. Kent State was not much better overall at 37.7 percent but it made seven treys and went 17-of-20 at the foul line.

Despite the game being Ohio's Bobcat Blackout event, attendance was low because of a major snowstorm in the area.

The Bobcats will face another major challenge in trying to put an end to their four-game losing streak when they host Bowling Green, which dropped out of a tie with Kent State for first in the East with a home loss to Buffalo, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Convo.
