Ohio offense continues struggles in loss to Kent State

Bobcats shoot only 34 percent, drop to 0-4 in MAC

KENT, Ohio - Ohio shot just 34 percent and dropped its fourth straight game to begin Mid-American Conference play, losing 69-59 to Kent State on Saturday at the MAC Center.

The Bobcats (5-10, 0-4 MAC) shot only 25.9 percent in the first half and fell into a 30-19 hole.

Maurice Ndour posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, though he was just 6-of-18 from the field. Stevie Taylor had 10 points but was just 2-of-7.

Derek Jackson paced the Golden Flashes (12-5, 3-1 MAC) with 18 points, Kris Brewer scored 14 points, Jimmy Hall finished with 12 and Chris Ortiz scored 10.

Kent State scored the game's first seven points, but Ohio did managed to fight back for leads of 10-9 and 13-12. The Golden Flashes followed, though, with seven points in a row one more time and did not trail again. Their lead reached 11 at 26-15 on an Ortiz tip-in and they held the same lead of 11 points at the break, 30-19.

The Golden Flashes' second-half lead never dipped into single-digits. The Bobcats were as close as 42-32 on three Khari Harley free throws with 11:05 remaining, but Kent State was able to push the lead from there to 58-38 on a Brewer 3-pointer with 6:56 to go and then 61-40 on three Jackson free throws at the five-minute mark.

Leading scorer Javarez Willis continued with his recent struggles, scoring only three points on 1-of-7 shooting. Antonio Campbell had just five points and five rebounds while shooting 2-of-7, and Ryan Taylor was 3-of-7 for seven points.

The Bobcats had only seven assists and 14 turnovers. The Golden Flashes had half as many turnovers and finished the game shooting 40 percent.

Ohio plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ball State.
