Ndour, Campbell help Bobcats pull away late

Alcorn State gives short-handed Ohio a test

ATHENS - Maurice Ndour scored 20 points, and Antonio Campbell posted his second straight double-double as Ohio pulled away late for a 66-55 victory against Alcorn State on Saturday at The Convo.

The Braves, winless this season against Division I opponents, trailed by one at halftime and by just one after two Tyrel Hunt free throws with 4:47 remaining, but the Bobcats (3-3) outscored them 13-3 the rest of the way.

Making his first start of the year, Campbell finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Stevie Taylor added 10 points and three assists.

LeAntwan Luckett led the Braves (1-7) with 15 points, Marquis Vance had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Hunt had 10 points and eight boards.

A pair of Taylor free throws began Ohio's late run. Campbell put back a Taylor miss and then scored a second straight basket inside to increase the Bobcats' lead to 59-52.

After a Reginald Johnson foul shot for Alcorn State, Ndour slammed home his own miss. Corey Barnes answered with a steal and layup with 1:04 left, getting the Braves within six again, but Javarez Willis hit two and Mike Laster one free throw and a layup to close out the game.

With Alcorn State leading 29-27 late in the first half, it fired up an airball that was touched by Ohio out of bounds, leaving it with one second on the shot clock. It tried to lob the inbound pass into the paint, but it was picked off by Khari Harley, who beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer that gave the Bobcats a 30-29 lead at the break.

Alcorn State regained the lead briefly in the second half, going up 38-36 on a Johnson 3-pointer with 13:11 remaining before Setty scored a layup that began a 6-0 Ohio run. With the game tied at 42, Ndour drained a 3-pointer to start a 9-0 run, capped by a Willis 3-pointer that was his only field goal in the game.

Luckett scored six straight Alcorn State points and Hunt four as part of the 10-2 Braves run that got them within one with under five minutes remaining.

Ohio led by as many as six on two occasions in the first half. Campbell hit a corner 3-pointer for a 16-10 lead at the 9:11 mark, and after Alcorn State scored seven straight, Taylor capped an 8-1 Bobcats run with a 3-pointer that made it 24-18 with 4:29 to go.

Both teams crashed the offensive boards, with the Braves getting back 14 of their own misses and the Bobcats 11 of their own. Alcorn State had more turnovers 15-13, and Ohio shot substantially better from the field, 47 percent to 33 percent.

Willis, the Bobcats' leading scorer, was just 1-of-8 from the field for five points, but had a game-high four assists. Alcorn State had only six assists as a team.

Ohio freshman Ryan Taylor sat out with what is believed to be mononucleosis, but coach Saul Phillips said after the game he expects him to contribute some the next game, despite previous reports he would be out a few weeks. Grambling State transfer Chandler Thomas was supposed to have been eligible for the first time but did not see any action.

Ndour played all but two minutes, and Wadly Mompremier, who was replaced by Campbell in the starting lineup, saw only eight minutes of action. Ohio's other seven eligible scholarship players all saw between 21 and 32 minutes.

Ohio travels to Evansville to face the Purple Aces at 9:05 p.m. Thursday at the Ford Center.
