Bobcats pull away from Pioneers late in exhibition game

Ndour leads 5 Ohio players in double-figures with 19 points

ATHENS – Ohio had five players score in double-figures and after trailing by as many as 14 early, pulled away to defeat Marietta, 82-69, in an exhibition game before a crowd of more than 11,000 on Saturday at The Convo.

Maurice Ndour had 18 points and nine rebounds, while Treg Setty, Javarez Willis and Stevie Taylor scored 15 each and freshman Mike Laster added 11.

Eddy Gernert’s 3-pointer with 6:52 remaining in the first half gave the Division III Pioneers a 38-24 advantage before the Bobcats eventually asserted themselves.

Marietta’s lead was cut to 38-37 on a Setty 3-pointer and the Bobcats were down just 40-37 at the break. Ndour gave Ohio a 45-44 lead with a three-point play with 17:38 remaining, and a Laster layup put the Bobcats up for good with 9:28 to go.

Willis was just 5 of 16 from the field, including 3 of 12 on 3-pointers, but he contributed seven rebounds and five assists. Setty had eight rebounds, and Stevie Taylor finished with four assists.

Luis Garcia paced the Pioneers with 20 points and went 5 of 8 from long range. A.J. Ireland was 4 of 10 on 3-pointers and scored 19 points, while Keith Richardson and Garrett Stephenson each scored 10 points.

The Bobcats shot 46.8 percent – including 53.3 percent in the second half – from the field, compared to 35.6 percent by the Pioneers, who were just 26.2 percent after halftime. They also were just 7 of 13 at the foul line overall. Ohio went 18 of 27 on free throws to help make up for going only 6 of 24 on 3-pointers.

Freshman Ryan Taylor played 35 minutes and had five points, four assists and three rebounds for Ohio. Antonio Campbell missed the only shot he took and had four rebounds and three fouls in just 13 minutes after leading the team in its closed scrimmage against Radford with 25 points.

Redshirt freshman Khari Harley and transfer junior Chandler Thomas did not play. Thomas is ineligible until Grambling State submits documentation of his graduation.

Ohio opens the regular season against Appalachian State at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
