Campbell's free throws in final seconds lift Ohio past Cleveland State

Freshman scores 11 of game-high 21 points down the stretch

ATHENS – Antonio Campbell made the most of having one more chance to play during his freshman season, scoring 11 of his team’s final 13 points, including the go-ahead free throws with less than five seconds left to lead Ohio to a 64-62 victory against Cleveland State in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Wednesday night at The Convo.

While the tournament extended the careers of Ohio’s seniors, it was the underclassmen who led the Bobcats (24-11) against the Vikings. Campbell scored 21 points to top his previous career-high by eight points, and junior Stevie Taylor and sophomore Treg Setty finished with 13 points apiece.

Bryn Forbes paced Cleveland State with 20 points and scored the game-tying free throws with 32 seconds remaining. Jon Harris, a transfer from Miami, missed a shot at the buzzer for the Vikings (21-12).

Ohio advances to the second round and hosts another Horizon League opponent, Wright State, at 2 p.m. Saturday. IPFW originally was announced as Ohio's opponent, but the CIT shifted the matchups.

Campbell’s playing time increased in the last month because of a back injury that has limited Maurice Ndour. He made the most of even more court time – 29 minutes – because senior Jon Smith left the team this week. Campbell was 6 of 11 from the field and 9 of 10 at the foul line despite entering the game just 14 of 33 on free throw tries.

It was a back-and-forth game with eight ties and six lead changes in the second half alone. Neither team ever led by more than six.

A putback of an Ndour miss by Campbell put the Bobcats up 60-56 with 3:29 remaining, but Trey Lewis hit two free throws, and after an Ohio turnover, Harris tied the game at 60 with 1:23 remaining. Nick Kellogg’s jumper with 46 seconds left gave the lead back to the Bobcats.

Ohio’s largest lead was 37-31 after a Javarez Willis layup early in the second half, but within five minutes, Cleveland State tied the game at 42 on a Forbes 3-pointer.

An Ndour dunk and Taylor 3-pointer pushed the Bobcats’ lead back up to five, but once more the Vikings came back, getting treys from Forbes and Trey Lewis to give Cleveland State its first lead of the second half.

After two free throws and a layup by Setty, it was all Campbell down the stretch for Ohio. He hit a pair of foul shots with 6:51 remaining, one at the 6:25 mark and added a layup with 5:09 remaining that gave the Bobcats a 56-54 advantage. Free throws with 3:46 gave Ohio a two-point lead again before his score after an offensive rebound finally made it a four-point game.

The Bobcats scored the game’s first five points and led 7-4 on a Kellogg layup before the Vikings had the night’s biggest run – nine straight points – to take a 13-7 lead. A short time later, though, Taylor hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 15.

After a Travis Wilkins trey gave Ohio an 18-17 lead, Cleveland State scored seven consecutive points to go back up by six. It was followed by seven straight Bobcats points, capped by a Setty 3-pointer that made it 26-24.

After a layup in the final seconds of the half by the Vikings’ Charlie Lee, the Bobcats led 32-31 at halftime.

Though Ndour struggled offensively with a 2-of-9 performance from the field, he led Ohio with nine rebounds. Kellogg also had an off shooting night, going 2 of 8 overall and 0 of 4 on 3-pointers, but he contributed six assists.

Lee scored 11 points and had six assists, while Anton Grady had 10 points for the Vikings. Marlin Mason and Forbes had nine rebounds apiece.

Second in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage, Cleveland State went just 5 of 19 from long range and shot 40 percent overall from the field. Ohio was 7 of 19 on treys and shot 41.7 percent.

Winners in the first round of the CIT are paired against each other in the second round based on geography with games set for Friday and Saturday. Another win this weekend would move the Bobcats into the quarterfinals, slated to be held between March 25-27.
