Ndour basket forces OT; Bobcats top RedHawks

Back from injury, forward scores 14 of his 15 points after halftime

OXFORD – Maurice Ndour scored the game-tying bucket with 1.8 seconds left in regulation and Ohio topped Miami, 82-76, in overtime on Saturday at Millet Hall.

Missed free throws by the RedHawks gave the Bobcats multiple opportunities and they finally cashed in on their last chance. With five seconds left after a miss by Quinten Rollins on the front end of a one-and-one and a timeout, Antonio Campbell passed all the way up the court from under his own basket to Ndour on the right wing. He took it one-on-one past a defender for a layup to tie the game at 68.

Ndour, who has been bothered by a back injury and sat out the last game, came off the bench against the RedHawks and played only 17 minutes, but he scored 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added eight rebounds. All but one of his points came after halftime. For the second straight game, Javarez Willis came up big, finishing with 15 points and five assists with only two turnovers.

Nick Kellogg, who finished with 14 points, nearly won the game for Ohio (21-10, 11-7 Mid-American Conference) in regulation, stealing Miami’s inbound pass and draining a 3-pointer but he was whistled for stepping out of bounds along the left sideline before putting up the shot. Campbell, making his second straight start, finished with a career high in points for a second time in a row, scoring 13.

Ndour got Ohio to within two at 68-66 with a bucket inside with 1:02 remaining and Kellogg came up with a steal to give the Bobcats a chance to tie it, but his pass was stolen by Will Sullivan. Geovanie McKnight missed on the front end of a one-and-one and Wilkins got a wide-open look at a 3-pointer from the corner that rimmed in and out with 11 seconds to go.

Willie Moore led the RedHawks (12-17, 8-10 MAC) with 24 points, while Quinten Rollins and Sullivan scored 12 apiece.

A Rollins jumper gave Miami the lead in overtime but Kellogg hit a 3-pointer for his only points after halftime and Ohio did not trail again. After both teams failed to score for two minutes and the shot clock winding down, Willis drained a shot from 10 feet beyond the arc to give the Bobcats a four-point lead.

Rollins scored on the other end only to be answered by Treg Setty, who put back his own miss. A turnover led to a pair of Ndour free throws with 39 seconds left and the Bobcats closed out the win at the foul line.

Despite two straight road victories to close the season, Ohio finished as the No. 5 seed for the MAC Tournament, meaning it will have to win five games in six days to claim the championship. Finishing fourth would have meant only having to win three games.

The Bobcats led most of the first half, including by seven on multiple occasions, including at 37-30 after a Willis 3-pointer with 20 seconds left. Moore converted a three-point play in the closing seconds to make it a four-point game at the break and the momentum carried into the second half.

The RedHawks scored seven straight points, taking a 42-41 lead on a Rollins fast break layup, and after a bucket by Campbell gave the lead back to the Bobcats, Miami scored seven in a row again, going up 49-43 on a Moore 3-pointer less than four minutes into the half.

Ohio closed to within one a Willis trey with 5:14 remaining and again on a Campbell layup at the 4:24 mark. Sullivan scored a layup and Will Felder hit two free throws to give Miami a five-point edge with 3:34 to go. Campbell cut the deficit to four with a free throw a minute later before Ndour’s final two baskets.

Not only did Ohio put four players in double figures, but it also had three scored eight or more. Wilkins scored nine points, while Setty finished just shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds in addition to four assists. Jon Smith scored all eight of his points in the first half and added four rebounds and four assists.

The Bobcats finished 30 of 61 (49.2 percent) from the field, including 10 of 23 from long range. The RedHawks shot 47.5 percent but that included a clip of just 4 of 21 on 3-pointers.

Still slowed by injuries, T.J. Hall and Stevie Taylor both saw some action but went a combined 0 for 7 in 19 minutes.

Ohio will host a first-round MAC tournament game at 7 p.m. Monday at The Convo. It will face No. 12 seed Ball State.
