Campbell huge in another Ohio comeback

Freshman scores Bobcats' final 6 points, grabs 6 rebounds

BUFFALO, N.Y. – One more time, Ohio found a way to come back from a double-digit second-half deficit, and that way was through freshman Antonio Campbell.

Campbell scored the Bobcats’ final six points to help them earn a 73-70 victory Saturday at Alumni Arena, the Bulls’ first loss in 11 games on their home court this year.

Averaging only 6.3 minutes and 1.6 points per game, Campbell made the most of his extended opportunity, grabbing six rebounds and adding two assists and a steal in 13 minutes. Nick Kellogg and Maurice Ndour had 17 points each for Ohio (18-7, 8-4 Mid-American Conference).

Jevon McCrea paced Buffalo (14-8, 8-4 MAC) with 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Shannon Evans scored 13 points off the bench and Joshua Freelove finished with 10 points.

Campbell gave Ohio a 69-68 lead with a putback with 2:46 remaining. McCrea grabbed an offensive rebound and threw down a dunk, and after two missed 3-pointers by the Bobcats, Campbell rebounded a missed free throw by Will Regan and again scored a go-ahead basket with 1:03 remaining.

Jarod Oldham missed for Buffalo and Campbell rebounded again, and on offense, Campbell gave Ohio a three-point lead by putting back an Ndour miss with seconds left. Kellogg had a steal in the final seconds to clinch the Bobcats victory.

Buffalo had an 11-1 runto go ahead 63-53 with 9:47 remaining on an Evans layup, but after both teams went scoreless for three minutes, Ohio began its comeback with a putback by Jon Smith. Javarez Willis, starting for the first time in place of the injured Stevie Taylor, completed a three-point play to make it a five-point game.

Kellogg scored a layup, Willis hit a shot from beyond the arc, and after a Campbell steal, Ndour drained a jumper to cap a 12-0 Ohio run for a 65-63 advantage.

Jarod Oldham tied the game with a jumper, and after two free throws by Ndour, Freelove connected on a 3-pointer that put the Bulls back in front at the 3:27 mark.

The Bulls took their first lead, 14-13, on an Evans jumper seven minutes into the game. They pushed the lead to 33-24 on a Freelove basket inside with 3:27 left in the first half, but the Bobcats closed the first half on a big run.

T.J. Hall hit two foul shots and Ndour completed a three-point play and then knocked down a 3-pointer, both assisted by Hall, to get Ohio within one. After a Xavier Ford free throw, Smith tied the game with a dunk. The teams traded free throws before Smith added another dunk that gave the Bobcats a 37-35 halftime lead.

Smith finished with eight points and nine rebounds despite being limited to 19 minutes because of foul trouble. Ndour had only three rebounds but blocked five shots and Willis had nine points and five assists with only two turnovers while playing all but two minutes.

Ohio shot 48.2 percent from the field, made 9 of 23 free 3-pointers and was 10 of 15 at the foul line. Buffalo shot 42.6 percent, connected on just 4 of 16 shots from deep and went 14 of 18 on free throws. The Bobcats had more turnovers, 13-9, and got outrebounded, 36-33.

The Bobcats host Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
