Diggs leads Zips past Bobcats in double overtime

Ohio blows leads in 2nd half, first OT

ATHENS – Nick Kellogg missed a pair of 3-point tries in the final five seconds and Akron knocked off Ohio for the fourth straight time, 83-80, in double overtime on Sunday night at The Convo.

Led by Quincy Diggs’ 20 points, the Zips overcame a nine-point second-half deficit and a six-point hole with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime.

Maurice Ndour scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Bobcats (11-4, 1-1 Mid-American Conference). Kellogg had 19 points and Travis Wilkins contributed 14 points. Jon Smith scored only five points but had a team-high seven rebounds and eight blocks.

Demetrius Treadwell had 16 points, while Jake Kretzer and Pat Forsythe scored 11 apiece for the Zips (10-5, 2-0 MAC). Nick Harney added 10 points.

Diggs put back his own miss to give Akron a three-point advantage with 34 seconds remaining. Stevie Taylor missed a shot to tie the game, but Nyles Evans missed twice at the foul line to give the Bobcats another chance with 13 seconds remaining.

Trying to draw contact, Kellogg’s first 3-point attempt was short, but Jon Smith rebounded and got it back out to Kellogg just in time for one quick attempt that came up shy of the rim.

Kellogg put the Bobcats in good position to win in the first overtime with a driving layup giving his team a 68-62 lead with 1:44 to go. Nick Harney split a pair at the line and Ohio held possession with a five-point advantage.

After an Ohio miss, Krezter drained a 3-pointer, but on the other end, Taylor hit a stepback jumper with the shot clock winding down to put the Bobcats on top by four with 22 seconds left.

Diggs’ 3-pointer kept Akron alive and Kellogg made one of two free throws, setting up a Diggs basket that knotted the game at 71 with six seconds left. Taylor went coast-to-coast and got a layup attempt off in the final second but it missed.

Wilkins had a three-point play with 8:16 remaining in regulation to put Ohio on top 52-43 and the lead was still eight after a Kellogg basket with 5:42 to go.

Reggie McAdams hit a trey and Harney scored in the paint to quickly cut the Zips’ deficit to three. Following two Ndour free throws, Harney scored again and Diggs connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 56 at the 2:46 mark.

Diggs answered a pair of T.J. Hall free throws with two of his own before Ndour put the Bobcats on top with a dunk. Ohio forced a turnover but returned the favor and Harney got open underneath to tie the game with 55 seconds left.

Another Ohio turnover left Akron with a chance for the win, but Diggs was stripped and Kellogg got off a running shot at the other end that was off target.

The Zips finished with 17 offensive rebounds to hold a 45-33 advantage on the boards. Treadwell led the way with eight rebounds for Akron. The Zips had more turnovers, 17-15.

Ohio hosts Ball State at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
