Bobcats grab 18 offensive rebounds in win

ATHENS – Ohio closed the first half on a 30-12 run and carried that momentum into the second half to take a 76-67 victory against Mercer on Tuesday night at The Convo.

Maurice Ndour had 23 points and added 11 rebounds and, one game after setting a career high with 17 points, Jon Smith scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

Langston Hall had 24 points for Mercer and his jumper midway through the first half gave his team an 18-9 advantage, but Smith put back a miss to spark Ohio’s run.

Ndour finally tied the game at 21 with two free throws at the 5:59 mark and T.J. Hall stroked two from the foul line to give Ohio the lead.

With the game tied at 25, Ndour drained a 3-pointer to put the Bobcats on top for good. Travis Wilkins added a jumper, Smith threw down a dunk and Ndour hit another from beyond the arc to push Ohio’s lead to 10.

Leading 39-30 to start the second half, the Bobcats went on a 14-4 run with a basket by Smith putting Ohio ahead 53-34 at the 14:53 mark.

Ohio’s largest lead was 57-37 with 13:17 remaining on two free throws by Ricardo Johnson after a steal. Mercer only got as close as eight in the final minute.

Ndour and Smith both went 4 of 6 and had 15 and 10 points, respectively, and seven and six rebounds in the first half. The rest of the team was 1 of 15 before the break when Ohio shot 33.3 percent but made 19 of 20 free throws.

Nick Kellogg scored eight of his 12 points after halftime when the Bobcats’ shooting percentage improved to 41.9 percent for a game mark of 37.9 percent. T.J. Hall went 7 of 8 at the foul line and scored 11 points.
