Taylor hits game-winner in Ohio win at Morgan State

Bobcats win first non-conference road game in nearly 2 years

BALTIMORE – Stevie Taylor scored a layup through contact and knocked down the free throw with 2.2 seconds left to give Ohio a 65-62 victory at Morgan State on Wednesday night.

The Bobcats (3-1) trailed most of the game but led 62-60 on a Maurice Ndour jumper at the 1:59 mark. With 38 seconds left, Justin Black missed twice at the foul line, but Anthony Hubbard put back the second miss to knot the game at 62 and give Ohio the last possession.

Ndour led Ohio with 13 points and eight rebounds. Javarez Willis had his best game for Ohio, scoring 11 points. Jon Smith and Taylor finished with nine apiece with all of Smith’s coming after halftime.

Black and Ian Chiles scored 17 points each for the Bears (0-4).

A 3-pointer by Black gave Morgan State its biggest lead of the second half, 56-52, with 8:12 remaining, but Ohio scored the next five points. Nick Kellogg made a pair of foul shots with 4:30 to go to put the Bobcats on top 57-56.

Chiles turned the game back in favor of the Bears with a basket in the paint before Ndour drained a 3-pointer to give Ohio a two-point edge. Chiles hit two from the charity stripe to tie the game at 60 before Ndour’s long jumper put the Bobcats back on top.

After Ohio got into an early hole, Taylor scored a layup to put the Bobcats up 12-10 midway through the first half. Morgan State, though, responded with an 11-1 run, taking an eight-point edge on a Black layup at the 5:40 mark.

Ndour hit a jumper and after two points by Morgan State, he found Treg Setty for a layup in the final seconds, closing the Bears’ lead to 31-30 at halftime.

Ohio’s forwards were in foul trouble in the first half and Ndour fouled out in the final minute of the game. Morgan State did not take advantage of its free throw opportunities, making just 14 of 30. Ohio was 20 of 31.

The Bobcats shot 42.9 percent, compared to 37.3 percent by the bears, but Morgan State had fewer turnovers, 14-9, and more offensive rebounds, 12-4. Ricardo Johnson had seven rebounds to go with his seven points for Ohio.

Ohio hosts Heidelberg at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
