Maryland defeats Ohio, 87-62

Terrapins start fast, then pull away in 2nd half


COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland gradually pulled away for an 87-62 victory against Ohio on Thursday night at the Xfinity Center.

Kevin Huerter led the Terrapins (8-3) with 17 points, while Michael Cekovsky scored 15 points with eight rebounds. Anthony Cowan had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Mike Laster paced the Bobcats (4-4) with 14 points.

Ohio trailed 41-28 at halftime, and after Maryland extended the lead to 51-31, the Bobcats came back with a 10-2 run to get within 12 at 53-41 with 13:19 remaining. The Terrapins followed with seven straight points, though, and then pushed the lead to more than 20 points.

Maryland began the game with a 15-2 run to take early control.

In his second game back from injury, Kevin Mickle had 9 points. Doug Taylor had 8 points and six rebounds, and Teyvion Kirk added 8 points. In his first game back from an injury, Jason Carter had 6 points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists in 16 minutes.

While Ohio got two players back in the last two games, Jordan Dartis suffered an injury and missed most of the second half against Maryland.

Ohio shot just 35 percent in the game, including 25 percent on 3-pointers, and made 15 of 22 free throws (68.2 percent) with 15 turnovers. Maryland shot 48.5 percent, including 34.6 percent on 3-pointers, and made 14 of 16 free throws (87.5 percent) with 19 turnovers.

The Bobcats host Western Kentucky at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Convo.
