Setty extends career, Ohio season with huge effort

Senior scores 30 points, including 12 in OT, in 94-90 CIT win over Albany

ATHENS – Ohio’s only senior, Treg Setty did not want his career to end Wednesday night.

He scored a career-high 30 points and added 10 rebounds to help Ohio hold off Albany, 94-90, in overtime in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational at The Convo.

The Great Danes’ Evan Singletary banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, but Setty scored 12 points in the extra five minutes – finishing with 23 points after halftime.

"After practice the other day I shot 1,000 shots because I said, 'I'm not going to go out. I'm not going to be a loser,'" Setty said.

For the third straight game, Ohio (22-11) got double-digit contributions from all five starters. Jaaron Simmons had 15 points and 10 assists, and Kenny Kaminski scored 14 points. Jordan Dartis had 12 points, and Antonio Campbell finished with 11 points and eight boards.

Despite a shoulder injury that had him questionable to even play, Singletary led Albany (24-9) with 19 points, including 17 after halftime. Mike Rowley had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Ray Sanders finished with 15 points.

Ohio advances into the quarterfinals of the tournament and will face UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. Monday in The Convo. The Spartans (15-18) were 69-65 winners against Houston Baptist.

The Bobcats led throughout most of regulation but were unable to put away the game down the stretch. Campbell put Ohio up 73-71 with a layup on a lob pass from Setty with 1:15 remaining. Simmons extended the lead to four with two free throws with 27 seconds left.

After Singletary misfired on a 3-pointer, Dartis could have put it out of reach, but he missed on the front end of a one-and-one. Holley hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left, and after Simmons hit two free throws two seconds later, Singletary forced overtime with a shot that went in off the backboard.

The Great Danes had the lead early in overtime, but Setty did not let them keep it. He tied it at 80 with a 3-pointer and later tied the game at 84 with a free throw with 2:14 left. Setty finally put the Bobcats up for good, 87-86, with another trey with 1:34 to go and then extended the lead to three on a coast-to-coast layup after a defensive rebound.

After a pair of missed 3-pointers by Albany, Setty rebounded and made it a two-possession game by hitting a free throw with 22 seconds left. After a quick Singletary basket, Khari Harley made two foul shots, and after two Singletary free throws, Setty put it away by connecting on two foul shots with nine seconds left.

Setty finished 11 of 19 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and added four steals and three assists.

"He's a beast, an animal," Simmons said. "Somebody who doesn't want to lose, who doesn't want their season to be over."

Albany scored the game’s first six points, but Ohio answered with a 16-2 run to go up 16-8. The Great Danes tied it at 23 with less than four minutes to go before the break, and after trading baskets the rest of the half, the Bobcats took a 30-28 lead into the locker room following two Campbell free throws with five seconds to go.

Ohio matched its biggest lead with an 8-0 run early in the second half that made it 38-30. The lead grew to as big as nine at 48-39 on a Harley 3-pointer with 13:53 remaining.

Albany followed a minute later with its biggest run, scoring 11 straight points, to go up 53-50 at the 10:54 mark. Ohio answered to regain the lead before a 7-0 run by the Great Danes put them up 64-60 with 6:07 left.

Beginning with a Kaminski jumper, the Bobcats took the lead down the stretch with seven straight points of their own. Simmons tied the game with a layup and added a three-point play to put Ohio in control, 67-64, with 4:10 remaining. That lead held until Singletary’s buzzer beater.

Usually a team that excels at getting to the foul line, Albany had just 11 attempts and made 10. Ohio was 21 of 25. The teams both shot 45 percent from the field, but the Great Danes earned more chances with 11 offensive rebounds to only four by the Bobcats. Albany outscored Ohio, 17-6, in second-chance points.
